You hit on the one advantage we amateurs have over the professionals - we don't have to cost our time, so can indulge the passion for perfection. Obviously, you are a professional boat builder, but you're doing this job at your own expense. You have the best of both worlds!
@DanLeeBoatbuilding3 ай бұрын
That's very true. Although I am technically a professional I still think of myself like an amateur that just does this full time now as I've just worked up from that level and I'm essentially doing my hobby for a living which is great! I'm glad that it allows me the time to fuss over details and quality is the priority not speed. God knows how long this is going to take me though 🤦♂️

This is a must watch series for me. Very much an amateur boat builder myself, so your professionalism helps me lift my standard greatly. Absolutely loving it all. And as others have said, no need for apology for not getting as much done as hoped. Now that Tally Ho and Arabella are finished your series fills a gap beautifully. Essentially viewing. Thanks very much. 👍👍 Rob

Greetings from Canada. There always seems to be a boat building project on KZbin that grabs my attention (Restoration of the 'Western Flyer', John Steinbeck's boat was one such). Now it is your building of the Temptress. On the home stretch with my 19' rowing wherry. Wherries were originally used as light cargo craft and also as water taxis on the Thames. An old joke: If a cabinetmaker decides to become a boat builder, the first thing he must do is throw away his square.

@DanLeeBoatbuilding3 ай бұрын
Thanks! It does look quite daunting but after the first time of doing it everything becomes easier. You can also vac bag in small sections of just 1-2 planks if needed. We'll see some of that when I get to doing the bottom planking.

superb work and attention to detail! a question though: up to what thickness of veneering material would you consider not necessary to wet the wall/edges of the veneer planks against each other ? would that depend on the wood?
@DanLeeBoatbuilding3 ай бұрын
This is probably about the limit, much more than this and I'd edge glue them as well. In a vac bag scenario though you often pull the epoxy up through the joints, if I hadn't taped them we probably would have seen more of that. You'll see this process again when it comes to planking the bottom, I'll be using 6mm and vac bagging so I might experiment with edge glueing vs not.
@allanfamily42143 ай бұрын
Dan, have you considered offering a kit where you supply the cnc’d wood allowing for a builder to just perform the build rather than have to source a CNC company or correct wood in the correct orientation? Cheers, loving this build

I’m a photographer by profession, but a boat builder by “missed path in life”. I come from a building/engineering family several generations long so I guess it’s in the blood. Despite what I do to make money (which I like as well), I’m absolutely passionate and ridiculously pedantic when it comes to building boats - my wife called the latest one my new mistress lol. So watching a professional go to such exacting standards is a dream watch. The last boat I built I kept for a couple of seasons then sold it for basically what it cost to build, so I could build another. My 3000+ hours the buyer got for free!
@DanLeeBoatbuilding3 ай бұрын
Thats a definite passion project and sounds familiar, most of the boats I've built to date have been sold for less than what the materials cost me.
@Disinterested13 ай бұрын
if you have one maybe joint the planks before you bandsaw them and save plane time just a suggestion based on what I can see in video as to making it a little quicker for you to get a starting strait for the lamination have a great day
@DanLeeBoatbuilding3 ай бұрын
Yes I should have probably edged the boards first and it would have given me a better starting edge for the veneers 👍
@MurraydeLues3 ай бұрын
What you said about the costing of the veneering process is sad. The people who commission boats like this usually have fairly deep pockets, yet they value your not inconsiderable skills cheaply. Won't spend the extra little bit to get a masterpiece but would be more than happy if you did it anyway, then show it off to all their friends. Nice well explained episode as usual.
@DanLeeBoatbuilding3 ай бұрын
It is sad but it's the reality behind this work most of the time, from what I have experienced in my short time doing this anyway. The minute you hear the words "could you do it for..." compromise has to happen and this sort of detail is the first thing that has to go in order to reduce build time. It may take me forever to do but I'm glad I can take the time to include these details in this build.

Nice video, how long typically do you have before the first coat of un tickened epoxy kicks?
@DanLeeBoatbuilding3 ай бұрын
In an ideal world wait for it to get to a sellotape tacky state but as long as it's done most of it's absorbing thats usually good enough. In the instance of the veneers I got straight on with things though as I wanted to get it all laid up and vac bagged before things started to set up.

Hello Dan, a Quick question: Will the frame eventually be bonded to the bulckhead ?
@DanLeeBoatbuilding3 ай бұрын
Yes, the frame gets notched into the stringers and the bulkhead sits over them so the two will get bonded together when the stringers go in.

I’m a bit surprised at the movement of the veneer after resawing, causing the amount of planing to get a good joint. Is that normal?

I’m not sure I had them that straight before sawing. I should have edged the boards on the jointer first really.

What does a boat builder charge for a job like that. Epoxy cost is one thing, but what is the professional and passion cost for that 12 hour job if a buyer was looking to have it done.
@DanLeeBoatbuilding3 ай бұрын
I don't know about others but I would typically charge £45 an hour plus VAT so the additional cost to veneer this bulkhead would be approx: £100 for epoxy, £80 for Utile veneer, £648 for labor, total around £828.

"colloidal silica"?
@user-by7hj4dj9s3 ай бұрын
West System 406 Colloidal Silica is an epoxy thickening additive used to control the viscosity of the epoxy. It prevents epoxy runoff in vertical and overhead joints. This is a very strong filler. It creates a smooth mixture, ideal for general epoxy bonding and filleting
