Rocket Hydroplane Boat Building Update April 2019 | Building a Wooden Boat

So here is where I'm currently at with the build. Still working on the varnish which is a process that will take around 10 months in total across two stages. I am making a video for that and should be putting up the stage 1 video in about 6 weeks time.
Next in line will be the hardware which I will be making out of brass and getting chrome plated. This will include a rudder and bracket, custom step plates, rubbing strips and a cutwater. All of which I will be making videos for so I will be busy in the coming weeks!
I also have the dashboard and seats to make along with cleaning up and painting the inside... lot's to do.

I think about 2-3 months away from finishing at the moment. I'm hoping to take the boat to a rally in Windermere early August so that's my target!

@@DanLeeBoatbuilding I'm building a flat bottom boat right now for fishing. How so you figure out the angle of the strut on the bottom and start size?

What plans are you using? Usually the shaft angle and size will be specified on the plans. My boat specified 12 degrees and I've reduced it to 10 which is the reason behind having the transom mounted rudder.

Ok then I would say definitely do some testing. Get a piece of timber that is the same thickness as your keel + ply or whatever is on top. Just by laying a batten over it on the floor at the right angle you can work out a lot of the measurements for strut and engine height and see what will work. Use the distances from this calculator: www.omnicalculator.com/math/right-triangle-side-angle and do a mock up of several different shaft angles to see what will work the best. It might also be worth you looking at what prop shaft struts you can buy, if there is a fairly reasonably priced one that is close enough for what you want then it may be worth arranging everything to accommodate it. Also have a look at your engine (if you have one yet) and see what sort of clearance you need for the gearbox etc. Do plenty of test mockups though before you go drilling the hole! Once you are somewhere close you can drill a test one and check it with a string line like I did in my prop shaft video. Hope that helps!
