They both sound really nice and "classic", but I can hear the differences. The 2nd version (single diaphram) does sound smoother and more melodic.

Very interesting indeed, can definitely tell the difference, would love to hear a P horn with copper diaphragms. I know the K horns sound very mellow.

Just did this to my P5 and it seemed to be harder to quill and became louder with single diaphragm setup.

I think the double diaphragm eliminates the usual squeak the P horns have when you open the valve, that’s at least what it’s sounding like to me. Edit: I think a cool P5 combo would be an old cast double diaphragm P5 but with a bell playing 370HZ (F#) in place of the 3 bell. You know the Royal Gorge Nathan M5 audio? This would essentially be the cheaper P horn variant of that.

The second one sounds a little better but the first is definitely superior due to the less air it uses.

Sounds killer!

Could this same thing be done with a P3?? If so, would you be willing to do a video? I recent acquired a P3 with a odd setup. Instead of the 1, 2 & 4 bells, it has 1, 3 & 4 bells but i lack the air setup to blow the horn and I have to take it apart and clean/sand, then repaint it.

P3 would be the same as P5, harsher and louder. Don't sand blast, glass bead or soda blast is much better.

Horn sounds good. I have a new cast p5 double diaphragm. Want to make it a single diaphragm what would be the correct way to reassemble it. Thanks
@mafarnz8 жыл бұрын
The double diaphragm was introduced about the same time as switch to new cast, so around 1977/78. That being, said, I've seen new cast P5's with single diaphragms in them. In fact I just picked up an ex NS new cast P5 that has all singles, so either would be correct.

how much less air does it take? can you double diaphragm K horns?
@mafarnz6 жыл бұрын
All K horns are double diaphragms. Most of my videos I use 30 gallons of air, for some horns such as M's I use 50 gallons.

Okay good to know! I own a Canadian Tuned K3L that was cleaned internally and came with brand new diaphragms in them. Do you still own your EX Canadian Pacific K3L's?
@mafarnz6 жыл бұрын
Yes I still have the one CP K3L.
@TracksideTyson6 жыл бұрын
I'd love to see more of it! also some videos of maintaining it and understanding each part of the horn. Mines a narrow font K3L
