Introducing WI&M GP9 number 1838. This is our locomotive for the WI&M, we are purchasing it through a lease to own agreement.
Built in 1956 as the 686 for Great Northern, it still is set up for long hood forward operation with the original 6BL air.

This is MY locomotive, and myself and the two other co-owners will do everything we can to keep it in good condition. The ability of our company to make money and eventually our livelihood depends on it!

YOU GOT AN M5 ON YOUR RAILROAD!!!!! Awesome job getting a gp9 though. That’s a great first engine.

@@mafarnz thats unfortunate, but it makes sense why it came off. A Leslie s3k would be good on her though. Those were used most on GN.

@@mafarnz sick. Guessing it’s a rs3k since a classic s3k would be more maintenance?

You do not have to move the stand to the other side if you chop the nose. Canadian early GP7/9's were set up long end leading, when they had their noses lowered, the kept the long end leading stand.
@mafarnz
@mafarnz 13 күн бұрын
Well first off we aren’t chopping the nose so that’s a moot point. But second that makes no sense to leave it LHF but chop the nose, you’d still be looking over your shoulder the whole run.

@DL541 13 күн бұрын
@@mafarnz it may not make sense but many CN, CP, GTW, (many more I can't remember their original owners) GP7/9's that now have a chopped nose, left their stand as is. Railroads do things that make no sense. A Modern example of a railroad that has long end leading is NS, they had several models with a low nose, GP59, SD60 and C39-8's. Albeit with a bi-directional(mostly) stand. We had a GTW GP9 on the DSRC set up the same way as your WIM unit. You are correct, you are looking over you shoulder. Besides, short high hood chopping is expensive and I personally did not mind the high short hoods or if a unit was set up long end leading.

Nice video and congratulations on your new GP9. Also I'm glad to hear that you will keep it as delivered from EMD to Great Northern. Any plans to paint it GN or BN any time soon?
@mafarnz
@mafarnz 21 күн бұрын
With the cost of a full repaint estimated to be $30K to $60K or more, we don't plan to repaint it anytime soon! GN big sky blue and GN empire builder are two of the considerations that we have for an eventual repaint at some point.
@yardhog
@yardhog 21 күн бұрын
@@mafarnz, yeah the paint will be in the $10k neighborhood alone. We spent close to 6 months volunteer time on body prep and cleaning our SW1500. But you have a decent paint job that will give you time to get all your ducks in a row.

Locomotives are run not driven. 😉 Bruce Buttler was the engineer that day. Once on home rails the WIM co-owners will be the train crew.

@mafarnz Are the co-owners running the train going to be the permanent solution, or are you going to be hiring a train crew?
@mafarnz
@mafarnz 24 күн бұрын
@@jacobmaurin7549semi permanent for a while, we aren’t even paying ourselves while we get started up. It will take a few years before we get to the point that we can hire employees.
