@@Measuringman Scotch & bourbon for sipping, gin for mix'n. But hey, to each... ;) So what do you think, do those old stock LP Deluxes get any love? Seems like a lot of rockers routed out those guitars for full-sized humbuckers or P-90s. Now that time has passed, do mini-hum LPs finally get some respect? I'd dig seeing an A/B testing of both.

@@ronbzoom8531 mini humbuckers sound amazing. They're still full fledged humbuckers that rock your arse off but they've got so much more definition than regular humbuckers. The added treble combines perfectly with the dark mahogany. Throw a bit of overdrive at it and they're perfect for blues. The neck pickup is way more useful than the normal full humbucker on a regular les Paul. My favourite is still p90s on a mahogany les Paul or SG but yeah Firebird pickups I haven't heard a lot of. It'd be really great to hear a direct comparison side by side with mini humbuckers. I do know that apparently guitar tone fiends hate the modern firebird pickups, and try to find old ones to put into their modern firebirds or pickups from other pickup companies to replace the modern Gibson firebird pickups. Something about the vintage ones is just better supposedly

That being said, a P90 in Jazzmaster's bridge position can be a mighty beast (and so is the Talisker by the way). The Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster actually comes with P90-ish Jazzmaster-format pickups (six screws and bottom plate) which only adds to the confusion out there.

Absolutely right about the ohms. I have a Filtertron on my Tele Partscaster in the neck. I had a lipstick pickup in the bridge that was double the ohms. That pickup only acted as a treble cut. It was not until I got a SD Quarterpounder that the pickups balanced out with the middle position. So for years it was an either/or setup, either neck or bridge. The middle was just the neck cut down on tone. On paper that Filtertron looks very weak however it is a loud...loud pickup. I think ohms wise its around 4 ohms and the Quarterpounder is like 16 ohms...sound wise they match pretty good. Much happier now. It is the Tele in my pic by the way.

Floating mini humbuckers in archtops sounds like a fun one to do next. Nice video. There are some old tube amps that do not have a ground. There are mods that can be done to add a ground and any amp tech can do this. Not only will be safer, there should be less noise as well.

I’m a commercial electrician and I will say this about the grounding fuse issue. First off, don’t fuse it. It could go the other way and leave you without a proper path to ground. If you are worried about electrocution, get an in line GFCI. A GFCI (ground fault circuit interruptor) will open the circuit if it sees a ground fault, which is basically what you are describing. Even if the mechanical ground is missing, the neutral on an outlet is still ground. If the GFCI device sees current leave on the hot leg but not return on the neutral leg, it will open the circuit. That said, I’m not sure how easy it would be to put line voltage through an amp and all the way to the strings to begin with, but if you did and you are using a GFCI device. You will instantly open the circuit when you touch the strings if you are grounded.

It may seem like a long time ago but it's just yesterday to me in that the amps etc back in the 60's were 2 prong and if you were hooked up and barefoot on a concrete floor then you were getting bitten...hard! If on carpet or wearing shoes etc then no problem but kids will be kids lol I remember seeing Linda Rondstadt back then bare foot holding a mic etc and not getting zapped? Maybe lip sync or you guys were setting up back then with real safety devices or stategies Cheers 'sparky!

Thank you for all of the info you have shared! A good example of output ohms meaning very little is when you run/wire a humbucker in parallel (rather than "normal" series mode), or 2 single coils together, (ie. Strat switch position 2 or 4). I just recently learned about this; I was stunned to see the ohm reading drop to half and thought there must be something wrong with my wiring. But no, that's just how it works. Running my humbucker in parallel, its not quite as hot as series/normal, but the output difference is slight nowhere near 50%. Tonal difference though... that's a whole nuther thing. =)

Great stuff. I was hoping you might explain the difference between a P90 & what people now call the "Staple" pickup. I read an interview with Seth Lover where he didn't go into details, but when asked why the pole pieces are rectangular, he said his ethos was always ,if you're going to improve on something ,you may as well make it a little different, make it your own. He also said that he really didn't care for adjustable poles as players would always adjust them too close to the strings and in his words "slur the note".

Hi Dylan. Thanks for this - great exposition as ever. I'll add my vote to the Firebird vs. Mini HB requests. Talisker is a great choice. To avoid harsh comments from angry Scots folk, however, I'd recommend calling any single malt 'Whisky'. 'Scotch' in the UK, is a term usually used for the cheaper blended stuff.

Hey Dylan, Really enjoy your videos. I've got a PRS with P-90's and it's one of my favorite guitars. Sounds great in every position. I've been thinking about maybe replacing the tone knob with a second volume so I can control the neck volume separately from the bridge and middle, as tend to keep the tone on 10 with that guitar. Do you think that's worth trying, or would the lack of a tone circuit brighten the guitar up too much? Thanks, Clint

Hello. Since a P90 uses a bar magnet to magnetise the (otherwise non-magnetic) pole pieces ... how does this compare with individually magnetic pole pieces? I mean gererally, the principle and the effect. Also, would you recommend swapping a ceramic bar magnet with an AlNiCo one to improve unsatisfactory stock Strat or Tele pickups, and/or is it worth actually inserting AlNiCo rods? Thanks.

I have a 70s lawsuit tele thinline with Maxon pickups. It was a great guitar to get that early Zeppelin sound(especially with the tone rolled all the way back) but the bridge pickup was extremely microphonic, to the point that playing above bedroom volume levels made it useless. I tried everything from rubber tubing for the pickup springs to foam padding in the cavity to no avail. I ended up swapping the bridge pickup with a Duncan stacked tele and the tone pot out with a push/pull. No more microphonics, but a different tone. Was that the most sensible thing to do? Was there another route I could’ve taken?

Lowes, or Home Depot sell a 5-10$ receptacle tester that makes sure the Hot, Neutral, and Ground connections are all correct. You plug it in a receptacle and if the lights match with the key, you’re good to go. If you’re playing in a place where the wiring looks somewhat home-brew, I’d insist on checking them and pass on by if they don’t show good. The device will tell you which wires are incorrect, in case you want to let them know, or make them fix it before you plug up.

How much of a difference do the Fender style pickups with individual magnetic pole pieces have on sound as compared to the bar magnets that span the width of the coil? The Fender styles seems to be a much better fit for twangy styles such as Surf Music and the bar magnet style seems to be much smoother suitable for jazz styles.

? Have always wondered how a pickup wonder such as yourself can make pickups similar/identical? Obviously wind counts but keeping windings similar enough that they sound the same, as well as knowing what the customer is looking for in their custom pickups? what if it doesn't meet their expectations? What do you do then?

Hey! Is there any video in which you talk about what gives the really "crunchy" quality that we get in some single coil pickups like Dearmond Dynasonics or gold foil type pickups you would find in Airline jupiters or the likes? I'd love to understand what gives the really crisp, crunchy quality of such pickups.

What effect would it have on the tone if one of the magnet rods were removed on the P 90?

Hi. New to the channel and have a question for you. I currently have a Hofner Colorado 2 that comes with 2 x P90 pickups. This guitar comes with either P90's or Mini Humsbuckers. I recently got my hands on some mini hum buckers and am considering changing them out. I've done some research and have found that some people change only one to a minihumbucker. Could you give me some advice on this setup. Many thanks in advance.

Great video. However, I'm not sure which one to choose. I want to put a pickup in my Gretsch Alligator resonator. I was thinking P90. Or do i want a Jazzmaster pickup 🤔

Nice video! Actually answered my questions about jazzmaster pickups. Now I know not to get one for raw P90 tones.
