Gibsons on P-90 are fantastic with one of the most versatile pickups! Firstly, on different amps you can get both vintage and modern sounds. Secondly, use Volume and Tone knobs, for example "humbucker" will be with Tone from 8 to 4, "single coil" will be from 5 to 2 (depends on amp and basically your task). Third, they are less noisy than single coils. And last - they have enough output to cover everything, from crystal cleans, to heaviest drop-X genres. As for SG Junior/Special in 2023, they are not that pricey now... Quality is much better than previous years (i mean all 2019+), hard cases, straps, multitools, factory PLEK plus setup, it's US made guitars with history, but in hands they are just really good instruments.

Scored a Sparkling Burgundy from CME for $1250 as "Good" condition. When this baby arrived, the scratches were miniscule and cleaned up with Lizard Spit fine scratch remover. Set up was on point, but put on new strings and it plays like a dream, intonation is near perfect, stays in tune, and NO NECK DIVE! Heluva buy, so I guess if sucks lately as stated by another commenter, I got goddam lucky 😄. But I own three other Gibsons and sold another two with no QC or tuning issues. Mine comes in at 5.6 pounds fully assembled and it’s an incredible axe, love it. I also have a Les Paul Special which was purchased brand new via Sweetwater which feels great too however I wish I would’ve went the same way with that one as I did my SG with far better hardware. Just got mine the warpround bridge was tilted I purchased locking bolts from Magic city bridge that’s the only thing that worked to get this guitar close to being in tune , intonation is close but not spot on , might change the bridge , you would think that Gibson would use locking bolts so the bridge wouldn’t tilt up and cause a sitar sound !!!!
@58BURST4 ай бұрын
If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and get the music city bridge as well. It firms up everything, and it's nicely milled for compensation on top. I bought the bridge first, only to realize without the locking studs, it still tilts forward. After adding the studs, the difference in sustain, and resonance was astounding! It intonated perfectly too. Cheers🎸

I own such a Gibson SG Special built in 2022. Unfortunately, I had to realize that Gibson has modified the P90 pickups since the 60s and that those modern P90s, same as here in your video, sound just muddy compared to what they did in those early days. Somebody once said a P90 is a P90. But that is definitely not true. After a long research, I found a German pickup builder, Andreas Kloppmann, who really modeled his P90s (SB62) by some original 60s ones (he also has another model with the 50s sound). They are not cheap, but they are worth every penny. With those, my SG sound has opened up and now provides a clear sound with an excellent string separation I had only dreamt of before. It now sounds very close to what Pete Townsend's SG had at Live at Leeds or Woodstock - simply fantastic. I'm wondering why Gibson is selling these not extremely cheap guitars with such limited quality P90s today. They could do much better, as Andreas proves. I do not know about the custom shop version. Maybe that has better ones?

John, amazing playing, great review! I’m actually in the market for an SG Special right now. I already own a Gibson SG Standard. You reviewed that Pelham blue Epiphone version of this guitar. How do you feel the Epiphone matched up to this black beauty QC-wise and in feel and sound? I’m not sure which one to go with….Gibson or Epi

The Epi is a great value but this is one of Gibson's best guitars, and best values. I really recommend the Gibson if you can
@cuda426hemi Жыл бұрын
If you are chasing the sound only - go Epi; but if you want luxury and feel and quality AND sound and are actually playing outside of your room once in a while, go Gibson. Both are valid for different purposes. It's a matter of a few less pizzas at a restaurant , big deal. Rosewood v Indian Laurel? Nashville v Guangdong? 2 no brainers right there. I have both (got Iommi SG and Epi Explorer and more) and there is no comparison as far as feel; but as far as multitracking you won't know what the heck I'm playing so it's all in what your needs and prefs are. All I know is I'm shocked how much I like the fat not typical SG Iommi neck what with my smaller (70 yr old) mitts but if it's the Plek job, MAN is it worth it cuz it's FAST. My 2¢ 🎸

I would definitely start by raising the pickup height on the treble side. Is it with the neck bridge position, neck position, or both? I have on mine. The intonation improvement is noticeable. Dare I say, it’s a different guitar. I will say, there is a distinct, vintage, jangly charm the guitar loses when you swap for a bridge you can intonate. If this is your main guitar, I would swap for something you can intonate. I've never owned a Yamaha (quick note, I'll be 71 soon and I've owned a LOT of guitars!) and I thought the new RevStar Std w/P90's would be perfect. But after all the $$ Yamaha spent on advertising it's still not available, and nobody can tell me why!?! Anyway, the LP Special, and this SG special would work too. But, I'm also a 'big neck' guy, no 'slim taper' for me. After a long hunt, I learned there are several ways to get a fat neck SG. Musicians Friend apparently has the rights to Team built CS ones from Gibson. ~$4400. Then actual CS ones, Wildwood has them for ~$5000. Then the Tony Iommi, I haven't seen official spec's, but a couple reviews said his neck was 'chunky', at ~$2300? So no P90's yet and the jury is still out. Maybe you guys could look into the RevStar thing? If you do it will probably show up, you know, that Murphy's law thing. LOLOL Thanks much!! 8) --gary
