Software Engineering is not about programming though. Let’s talk about grammars, parsers, compilers, RISC architectures, cryptography, symmetric keys, network protocols, state machines, regular engineering stuff (maths, lot of maths, physics, electronics, digital electronics, etc.)… but good luck with your python script, that looks fun, nothing like Kirchhoff or “make the following algorithm run in O(log n)”

In the past you could get a job with a boot camp. Today, it's very hard to get one with a degree. Experience of course trumps all, but thats a catch 22. I would not recommend boot camps because the moment it became popular is the moment it became oversaturated. People I know with boot camps and even without either have gotten jobs but it is far and few between. It is certainly not the norm. Yes, you can learn anything by yourself and potentially get a job. But like someone working on an airplane, wouldn't you prefer he was FAA certified if you were going to be flying on it?

It’s so strange seeing these because I can answer every single leetcode Question you can throw at me. I’ve read the book. I’ve done my résumé. I have my github. I have even developed applications for small businesses… Yet, I can’t seem to get a single interview I have better luck getting interviews for senior management as like a director of IT then I do for a junior or mid-level software development position I think I have a better shot of just trying to take my ideas and make money with that then I do with actually getting a stable job
@shefali567 Жыл бұрын
That’s because the job market is really bad right now and wont hire without experience but it will get better soon dont lose hope
@raggedflaggon9566 Жыл бұрын
Yes, currently it is very difficult to get interviews. I recently finished my degree, and I finally got a great remote job, but it was very difficult. I know many with degrees that can't get interviews as well. Either the massive hr layoff is making it more difficult or it is just not the right economic timing. A few years ago during covid they were hiring people like crazy though. My friend without a degree or bootcamp was able to get a great job for example. The only thing you can do is apply to as many places as possible all over the country to increase your odds. Or, if you went to a top tech school then you have much much higher odds. Experience of course trumps all but thats the catch 22. If you keep trying then eventually it will work out. Especially if you can do all the hard leet code questions. But yeah, it took me 5 months to get something. I applied to over 100 maybe 200 places and got 4 interviews. I went to a decent school and had a 4.0. I have heard other people have similar experiences without connections. Unfortunately, this is not a merit based system if it ever was, so let that drive you. I honestly think I got my job through luck. I was just lucky somehow, maybe god, allowed me to get it. Idk. It's hard out there man. During this time I had to become a stoic philosopher because I was getting too depressed.

It is much more common to see people from top colleges, recently even some early career eng quit to pursue PhD in Stanford and CMU.

Coding boot camps compared to an actual degree don’t go nearly as in depth into complex topics like computer architecture, data structures, and the logic behind computers and it’s applications. If a company had to choose between a college graduate with a BA in SWE or CS or someone who’s completed a coding bootcamp, they’ll pick the college graduate 100% of the time.

I would like to politely question this advice a bit. From my very recent experience having graduated during the pandemic, many sectors (even in dev) are becoming very saturated, and a lot of my colleagues from a top 5 US school do not in fact make an above average salary as engineers. I personally feel like perhaps this was different 8 years ago. It certainly was in my former industry. But now especially post-pandemic, degrees are often needed just to pass the automated resume check, let alone getting to talk with someone. Best of luck everyone!

I lost my creativity after 15 years of sitting in a classroom and being told i was wrong. It was lawful for teachers to use the wipe, so i learned to fear things i did not know because any time I expected to be hit with a ruler. So I stayed away from things I did not know and told my self i was dounce thats what 17 years of school did to me.The only thing i learn is i was dounce . Then i notice there were people who i was not as i telligent as me and was doing better than me they hard the confidence and were willing to just do it.Me once i could not do it i ketp away from it. @Davic-sc5kf So, it seems like you know "how to solve the problem in English (or whatever language you use)", but you don't know how to "turn that into *Insert programming language here*". So, First pick a programming language (Python and Java are good for beginners), then learn the syntax ("grammar") of whichever language you choose. This may seem a little daunting, but worry not, writing the correct syntax will come naturally over time, just like you learned to write *insert language here* in primary school ;)

C++ is insanely hard and it's falling in popularity, the tool chain is terrible, there's a feature overload too, if you necessarily want to learn it, at least you should first start with C which is already very hard and will teach you a ton of fundamentals, and there isn't really a point of learning C++ and Rust since Rust is often viewed as a C++ replacement, plus Rust won't land you a job any time soon. If you just want to learn how to program and get a job, learn a garbage collected language without manual memory management like Go or maybe even a scripted one with dynamic typing since it's simpler to understand for a beginner, like Python or JS (the latter only if you're planning on doing web dev)
