I have read it. The soil type is same in both Bidar and coastal Karnataka. Bidar laterite stones are harder compared to coastal region. So, less chances of the cave/tunnel collapsing.

Karada Brahmins and SURANGAS Karada Brahmins were migrated from Karada region of Maharashtra state and settled in Kasaragod District of Kerala state and Some region of Dakshina Kannada. Most of the families were settled in Padre village of Enmakaje Grama Panchayat, Agalpady of Kumbadaje Grama Panchayat and Bayar. Majority of them are agriculturalist.Besides preserving their golden tradition studying Vedas and works as priests. The special contribution of Karada Brahmins community is digging Surangas for drinking water. More over they used the water for irrigation purpose. Why Surangas? All these areas where they live are hilly. Therefore a well was could not be dug there. So they started dig Surangas. Sri Padre notable and prolific writer who identified more than 1000 Surangas in Padre village of Enmakaje Grama Panchayat and also same No of Surangas identified in Bayar of Paivalike Grama panchayat. Not only in above said area but also we can see these Surangas in Karada Brahmins family. Each family has 1 to 4 Surangas in there agriculture land. A Karada Brahmins family in Kayampady of Karadka Grama Panchayat has 10 Surangas. Most of the Surangas were constructed during British colonial period since 1750. In some areas work is still going on as part of the reconstruction of the Surangas. We cannot see the Surangas in other places of india. Surangas in Kasaragod are specially designed for drinking water.
