2023, my gf and I visited Japan (Kyoto) and stayed for 3 weeks. During our time there we were able to witness some really kind tourists and kind foreign residents (mostly SE Asians and Chinese). Though it felt like most of the tourists we saw (generally western) were really rude, disrespectful and just overall nuisance to the local residents and fellow tourists. We saw a bunch of western dudes just harassing local women there and at one point, we saw a couple of guys (black and white) trying to sexually harass a maiko on her way home. My gf and I and an old Italian couple had to intervene and just buy enough time for the young girl to escape. For those of you who dont know what a maiko is, it's an underaged geisha-in-training. Really felt like the yen crashing during the pandemic gave a lot of fools the means to afford a plane ticket so they could go to Japan and treat it like a cultural theme park

I visited Japan in 2024 (Tokyo, Sendai, Hakodate, Osaka, and Kyoto). First time leaving Canada. My rule out there is I would act like I see locals act. If I saw a tourist do something, I couldn't use that as an excuse. If I saw multiple locals do it, then I assumed it was okay. Until then, I didn't so much as jaywalk out there. My backpack has multiple areas. One was dedicated to just trash. And for our drinks, it had 2 side-pockets. So once the bag filled up, we knew it was time to find a proper garbage. I don't understand why people can go to other cities and like so horribly. Like, if someone came to your city as a tourist and started destroying stuff, wouldn't you be angry? I'm sure I made a fool of myself at some point, but it was never intentional, and nothing got damaged or destroyed in the process

The main problem, in my opinion, that Japan is facing right now, is it's '15 minutes of fame'. When I first visited in 2017, that was starting to come on, but still kind of subdued. Most people travelling to Japan had an actual interest in Japan, learned some of the language at least, informed themselves of what to do, and almost everyone just generally had a good time. I visited again in 2018 and 2019 - in 2019, I coincidentally also met my now wife, who is Japanese, so I am going to go back each year at least for the foreseeable future. Those years it still was okay, although it became more and more crowded over time, and the whole 'party tourist' kind of clientele started to increase. Now, after COVID, it's just.. bad. Japan is the flavor of the year, the yen being weak makes it cheaper, and now everyone goes or wants to go to Japan. In 2017, most of my coworkers were like "Oh, Japan, cool, I'm sure it's a beautiful place", when nowadays a good 8 out of 10 people have already been themselves or are planning to go. What's often crass to me is how little they know of Japan, even after they went. Had a coworker that went for 3 weeks and basically didn't eat anything other than ramen, conveyor belt sushi and konbini onigiri. When I asked him why he didn't try all the other things Japan has to offer, he was none the wiser, claiming he thought there wasn't much more. He was stunned when I told him about all kinds of other stuff that is there to eat.

I went for a week this past spring on my way back to Canada after spending a few weeks in South Korea, and I completely understand what you mean. Shinjuku is kind of a mess, and a lot of the popular places in and around Tokyo are overcrowded to the point it's not even fun. Japan was a country that I wanted to visit since I've been a kid (being a fan of Japanese culture and all). The best time I've had was when I randomly decided to just get out of the city for a day and go to less traditional places around Tokyo; and that's where I found the Japan I was hoping to see. Probably going back next fall (hopefully there are less tourists than during cherry blossom season) since there's still a lot I want to see. I feel South Korea is starting to become the new flavor of the month with all these influencers, and the Won is also cheap. There was a stark contrast between when i went in 2023 and when i went this past spring.

@SherrifOfNottingham
@SherrifOfNottingham 14 күн бұрын
I mean, luggage forwarding is a thing in Japan so _that_ is an option. The complaint as I heard it was how foreigners have a tendency to carry luggage with them to the tourist activities, which I think stems from the fact that foreigners tend to get hotels centrally located near the touristy areas where as domestic tourists are more likely to commute to the touristy areas from hotels in cheaper parts of town. So they perceive that foreign tourists carrying their luggage around with them everywhere, because foreign tourists are getting on the busses from the 'hotel area' to the 'destinations' with their luggage.

@@Paahtis The Japanese city buses weren't never designed to carry travelers with big suitcases, most Japanese either takes a taxi, train, metro or the airport shuttle bus, but never goes around the city in a local bus line, those buses are only designed to carry passengers going to work, leisure or shopping, never with big suitcases... I prefer take a taxi from the Kyoto train station (that's what I do each time), plus the taxi service is reliable, clean and comfortable!

I live in Fukuoka, but I haven't seen a lot of tourists around. I'm treated very well as a foreigner though. I've only felt discrimination when getting a guarantor for housing at first, but otherwise, I feel far more welcomed and at home than back in the U.S. It shouldn't be idealized, but the culture has just been so much more respectful and less confrontational compared to back home. I don't think all foreigners should be blamed, but there is some truth to the whole point that most foreigners are not used to the social and manners expectations that Japanese grow up with. Basically, the main problem is more often a difference of culture and being KY (inconsiderate, unobservant of your surroundings and how you make others feel). In the U.S. a large emphasis is placed on individual freedom, live and let live, while Japan's culture is more about maintaining social harmony. If you act out, it is easy to disturb people, maybe even unintentionally. Most people here are very forgiving of foreigners who really don't mean any harm though. You treat them with respect, they'll go out of their way to help you in many instances, something that has rightfully won the hearts of a lot of people who want to try and integrate better into the culture.

One guy even spent 15 minutes walking with me to a place I could buy E-cigarettes. The 3 weeks I was there, Friendliest and nicest tourist experience I had. @@southcoastinventors6583 Japan was just fine during the pandemic, the Yen crashing has more to do with the overall economy of the entire world during that time instead of exclusively being a Japanese issue (and ofc its the pandemic, businesses all over the world had to shut down). They could do with WAY LESS tourism now and still remain in the top 4 - top 7 economies in the world. The whole 'Japan is nothing without tourism' is completely overblown. Hell, Japan didn't see that much tourism during the 80s, 90s and even the lost decades (2000s) and still remained in the top 5 economically worldwide.

After living in Japan almost 8 years (first coming to Japan 15 years ago), i can tell: Japan is a lot dirtier and overcrowded. Overtourism seems to take its toll on Japan. I live in the south (Kyushu) but went to Tokyo just recently (2025/01) for a trip with my family. In many spots the owners were unfriendly and seemed annoyed, but lightened up and became super talkative once i talked to them in Japanese. I think this is not just hype by Japanese media - it is bad ! And many foreigners behave poorly. There is a good chunk that is pain ignorant, though the minority of tourists. The largest part are average tourists who might even have read up on Japanese customs, but still appear as a nuisance due to their sheer number and lack of knowledge of rules (for example not to simply walk into a restaurant and sit down !). I do not know the solution though. By the way, the legal situation regarding recordings of people is DIFFERENT than in the US !! Recordings of privat people and interiors are not generally permitted !! There are no amendments !!!

What gets me is there's places in Japan where you CAN mark your visit, leave a love lock of your visit, many shrines have wooden tablets you can carve messages into and leave tied up at the shrine. They _have_ this activity and yet people choose to deface things meant to be left alone. And yeah, it's people, not just foreigners, local tourists aren't magically better. Close the country and prevent foreign tourists and all of the writing on the bamboo would be in Japanese.

It's a very difficult issue because the standards of behavior are different. I think, though, the number of tourists who causes problems are very small - less than 1%. When I visited all kinds of tourist places in Japan, I have never seen any problem. But having said that, tourists should be very mindful of their surroundings. If they don't know the rules, ask the locals; they will tell you. Usually unintelligent people cause problems. I think this site is well done!!! Thank you.😀😀😀

Entrance is expensive, there are way too many people to truly enjoy the experience and the place itself is actually really underwhelming. This issue is considered a major concern in Japan as well. I am in a different position from the average Japanese. In other words, unfortunately, there are some things that need to change in Japan. Japanese society has been a huge village society. People of the same ethnicity, the same values, and the same common sense lived together based on mutual trust. To use an analogy, it was a huge gated society. However, that society cannot continue forever. It is unrealistic to keep the country closed off in the modern age. Therefore, Japanese society must change on the premise that people with different values will come to Japan. I am not saying that it should be chaos. The realistic answer is to reduce tourism pollution through appropriate zoning, signage, surveillance cameras, etc.

Hey man, great video! From my experience living in Kyoto I absolutely feel it when tourists bring their suitcases on the bus. However, in Kyoto there are not many other options apart from taxi or just straight up walking so I by no means blame this on tourists. The trains in Kyoto dont go to where people need to go and the buses are incredibly small because of the small streets. Unfortunately, the current mayor seemingly wants to have both tourism but also dont want to invest in the infrastructure that would help the situation. But hey, at least they got their luxury city hall coming along :/

Yeah I get that it might be annoying, but what else are the people expected to do, right? When I went to Toyosato there was a Japanese woman sitting next to me on the train with her suitcase so that nobody could sit infront of her, blocking a chair but there was no TV crew there to film her haha :D

Kyoto was the only place in Japan where I was mistreated just because I looked different. An old man was making some rude signs with his hands to me in the bus and even push me when he went off the bus. Even a Japanese couple said something to the tiny old man who was disrespectful to me. Just ban the bad apples, not the entire box.

I've never understood people harassing the maiko and geiko while they're out and about. They're on their way to work or lessons! I'd bet these tourists wouldn't like it if someone came to them while they were at work or walking to work/class to take pictures and be a general nuisance. Especially the maiko, they're young girls! Also, bless Kunie-san for all her work and kindness. (Forgive me if I've spelled her name wrong, the captions kept saying kunai and kunan.)

How recently was this filmed? If it was during December, that would explain the lack of over crowding since it's by no means a peak tourist season in Japan. If you'd gone in March or October, things would've probably been a lot different. I was in Osaka and Nara for the first week of December, and while there were crowds at popular spots, I wouldn't call any place save for the train during rush hour overcrowded.

I went to Japan in spring of 2023, and I had an amazing time. I know, of course, my experience is not universal, but it wasn't overly crowded, and all the Japanese people I met were super, super nice to me (as a tourist). I only had one bad experience, which had more to do with the fact that I'm a (white) young woman, rather than with the fact that I was a tourist. In any case, it's sad to see that some few rude tourists ruined it for everyone. And it's also sad to see the aversion and disdain some Japanese locals and the Japanese media seem to have developed. I wish tourists could just follow the rules and be respectful towards Japanese culture in order to have a good relationship with the locals. And I wish the Japanese media wouldn't encourage this dislike against foreigners. Cause all this is just going the wrong way. It'd be a shame if in a few years it wouldn't be possible to visit (parts of) Japan anymore. PS: the old lady seems so nice and cute. I wish I had known about her when I visited Kyoto.

As overblown as a lot of the stuff is, I am still glad I have visited Kyoto already multiple times before the tourist boom. And don't really feel much need to go again. After all, even a lot of well behaving tourists are still a lot of tourists. And especially Kyoto doesn't really have the infrastructure to accomodate that. Luckily, there are so many more amazing places all over Japan that would welcome more tourists. It is still baffling to me how tourism promotion by the government is still strongly focussed on Tokyo, Kyoto and a handful of other already busy places, and rarely on lesser known areas that could really use some tourist bucks. And the fact JR effectively killed off the Japan Rail Pass obviously doesn't help either.

Did you do any in-depth research over a period of several months? You just stroll in for a few days and say, “I saw very few people causing trouble.” A friend of mine traveled to the U.S. for a week and came back without any trouble. Does that mean you can conclude that “there are almost no criminals in the U.S.” or “there is almost no gun crime”? That is what you are saying. You are basing your conclusion on data that is clearly lacking.

The modern person sees a place with culture and tradition like Japan and they see no reason why this can't be harvested or mined and sold. The heart of modernity is materialism. "No photography" is a thing in many places worldwide, including some places in Japan that aren't Gion. Places of worship, museums, restaurants, sensitive areas. The difference between all of these and Gion is IMO more significant and more reasonable - in Gion harassing geishas and maikos are directly disrespecting individual people! If you take photos of a shrine, a display piece, a food item - you're taking photos of objects. Geishas are people and shouldn't be harassed this way - they don't cater to tourists and they don't need tourists. Tbh 10k is really low. It's just otoshi to not have to care about getting caught harassing geishas. Make it 250k at least. The "good" people can take pictures off almost everything. just not geishas.
