FWIW, the VL's are great airbrushes when used for what they are best at: Putting a lot of paint down quickly. The #1 "fine" needle/nozzle that comes with the VL is a .55, the #2 medium is a .75 and the #3 large needle is a 1.05 (that's spray GUN territory). The needle that comes installed is the .75 - not a .3 - so that is why you were moving so much paint. Also, the needle adjustment is a bit different than other guns - you want to make sure that you allow the trigger to drift all the way forward before seating the needle in the nozzle/cone. If you have some turns on that knob that sits in front of the trigger, you can inadvertently be pushing too much air right when the needle comes off it's seat, making it seem hard to control paint flow. The hose "kink" going into the airbrush (the bent metal tube) is so you can tilt the hose to a position that's more comfortable for your style (i.e. it's on-purpose). Just point the hose the direction you want it to tilt and lock down the nut (you will have to use the wrench to get a tight seal). I currently have 11 airbrushes and have owned quite a few others: several Iwata, some Master, Grex, Aztek, and Paache. I've had nothing but bad luck with Badger (that's just me, though). Paache VL was my first brush - and now I own 2 of them ( including my original ) and they just keep on working. I don't use them for detail work any more - that's the Iwata's job - but when I need to put down base coats or primers, they are my workhorses. IMO, no airbrush outside of a automotive detail gun can lay down as much paint.

I have been out the game for many years but trying to get back in the paasche was my go to. I owned an iwata hpbc but never used it (I think I got it for Christmas in 1989) I want to buy a new brush for shirts and maybe some motorcycle tanks. Should I consider a different brush or stick with the paasche in this video? You know your brushes I can’t tell by what your typing. I appreciate you insight. Thanks
@kenthouston467 Жыл бұрын
@@c.steele3386 In my humble opinion, if you plan to spray pigments (paints) and not inks or dyes (much thinner) then you would probably be better off with something like a VL than an Iwata. Iwatas are great airbrushes - fantastic detail guns - but they don't (in my experience) have as much dynamic range as something like a VL. I can paint a line 1/32" wide with my VL and expand that out to 2" with the #1 needle. With an Iwata, I can go down to a hair's width - but past about 3/4" they start to struggle to move enough paint. Of course, the beauty is that you can buy more than one brush and have QD connectors and just choose the best tool for the job. If I was recommending a good all-around brush for a beginning user, though, it would be a VL (my oldest one is 41 years old and still going strong) ... and if you want the next best thing to a rattle-can to put down a ton of paint, the Paasche model H is a paint-moving monster - and it's external-mix so almost impossible to clog - and not that expensive to buy. Best of luck to you :)

i bought a Paasche VL like that in early 90s. I used it for modeling plastic kits and painting rockets. I recently found it and was able to restore the damaged worn out parts and even replaced the handle for a chrome one. I easily found all of them. I even made a wooden box for it to protect it. The brush is fully functional. This airbrush will last 100 years easily. I paid $52 for it, yep still have the receipt it out lived the art store. Want a tank? Get a Paasche. Paache needle numbers #1 - 0.5mm, #3 - 0.75mm and #5 - 1.01mm. You can always spend up to $700 for a fine set if you are rich... It will still spew out paint... LOL

Have had one for years. You need the fine VL1 tip for the finest line. But, in honesty, a gravity fed will give an even finer line. Have never had my hoses leak either. Has ZERO problems with acrylics and enamels. You couls have gone with less thinner and a little more air pressure with no splatter / overspray or clogging. It's a case of knowing the tool. Making a comment based on assumptions is NOT a review. Have painted models with these paints and got great results. One issue with the kit is beginners often use the wrong needle for the tip they have as they don't take time to understand the markings (not talking about you, but beginners). Kit has always needed better markings or even sorting all the same size parts in their own containers. Still an Excellent modelers brush. As stated earlier, was the go to brush many years ago for artists, but technology has improved. I agree with you that a gravity fed is a better option these days for artists. It's a case of the right tool for the job. Paasche does make some higher end gravity fed brushes BTW.

I've got the exact same airbrush and hose... My hose connection to the airbrush is also bent.. I think it's something Paasche had purposely designed but for what reason, I have no idea. I've had to litterly crank down on that tiny 1/8 inch nut myself in order to keep it from leaking air after applying teflon tape to all its (airbrush) threads. it has a dial that I believe controls the needles' distance to the nozzle but find it extremely difficult to access while my finger is on the air release. Awaiting my new Talon... Here's hoping it's a far better airbrush!!

Siphon feeds need a higher Air pressure and well thinned paint, Creatix makes good paint especially for Model builders but it's needs to be thinned and have a leveling agent (Some brands offer a 2 in 1 mix) for best results on models. Not sure about shirts but my friend has a 186k model that he got on the stupid cheap and after polishing the needles (remove the pits) those are the only ones he uses now at the fair (He ended up buying 6 more and spent 2 days polishing all the needles, which you must do with cheap brushes). Like your video and had to chuckle at the box opening, no tripod makes life hard :) Great work!

In terms of cleaning procedures, what do you typically do, or would do to clean this tool? I'd like to take good care of it since it's probably older than me. Anyways, thanks for the tutorial, I also wanted to make sure I had all the parts.

I was given a VL, and was thinking mine was defective too, because the hose is also bent. Thanks for clearing that up ! I'm still having problems with it though. Even when spraying water, it will spray, and then stop, like it is clogged. The only holes that could possibly be clogged are the tiny, tiny holes in the "cone" that screws off to expose the needle. ( not the three large holes above the needle ) I notice that bubbles come out where I have screwed the cone onto the threads - even when spraying water. Other than that, the only thing i can think of is that my compressor is crap. It does not have a tank .

I started out with the Paasche VL3 and never had the chance to even try a Badger airbrush. Used the VL for many years and had a dozen or so when I was painting in Gatlinburg, TN in summer of 1988. Then in the mid 1990's I got my first Iwata HP-CH--wow, what a difference from the VL! Eventually I got a few more HP-CH's as well as a CM-C Micron....absolutely great airbrushes, just a bit overpriced in my opinion. Last year I picked up a couple of Olympos MP-200C Microns (as well as an Olympos SP-B) and these have now become my daily workhorses--freaking awesome airbrushes, the original Micron design, and way cheaper than Iwata Microns! And still I have three Paasche VL3's that I use for spraying metallics, pearls, and large backgrounds and such. Keep them clean and lubed and they'll last for many years.

Iwata air brushes come with very fine needles. Try to compare with a comparable airbrush with the same needle size! I've had mine for over 41 years & has painted many a 1:72, 1;87, & 1:20.3 scale models. Has painted some fine lines & you can always buy a much longer hose for the air supply. Unless you bought you badgers used, they didn't come with a 15 - 20 foot hose like you show. I owned several makes of airbrushes & will NOT say they are no good because they don't do what I want. In fact that is why I own several makes because they accel at what they do.

I plan on painting models and doing art with fine lines and detail. What's your insight?

This airbrush is not good for fine lines or details. It doesnt atomize paint very well and shoots more of a speckle. DO NOT mix my talent and expertise with the airbrush itself. VERY LOUD compressor, leaking paint, rusting bottle metal caps, a red handle you won't use because you have to pull out the needle to clear dry paint and try again. HELL ruined my business and had to join the military :) true story

We dont live in 10 years ago... Glad you didn't like the shirt. Shows the quality of the airbrush spray. Anyway I am glad the video made you feel some kind of way. Brand loyalty helps nobody...
