I just purchased a 2011 Pete 386 with the MX13 motor. You guys have been an absolute encyclopedia of info about that engine when it's so hard to find tips and specs about certain things. The truck also has a Tripac APU and you've been a source of confidence for me to service that as well. I did a full oil, belt and filter change on it and even switched out the AC compressor and recharged it myself saving at least $1000 over the dealerships who seem to value their services a bit higher than those of us who are actually paying the bill!! Thank you guys!! Keep it up!!

Ole Bill at Koon have saved me thousands of dollars in the past 3.5 years with my 2014 t680 mx13.. They made me think I can fix anything on my truck because they make it look soon easy.. I just need to more tools . The mx13 to me is simple with more space to work than most other truck engines. I can say the parts is a bit on the high $ side.

When I change my fuel filters, I change primary one first (Davco) prime up the clear plastic bowl, start the engine, then change the secondary fuel filter, then prime it. You won't get air in the line, or have to manually pump the primer. Also you won't get that pesky check engine light to reset.

I currently work at a truck stop that has an actual pit in the PM bay. For anything above the basic oil n filter change, I try to take care of checking the gearboxes n greasing it because having a pit makes it a thousand times easier, and because that pit is also an oily, greasy, musky human broiler, especially under a hot truck. Then I'll take care of changing the oil n fuel filters. Once I get the damn thing started, which damn near takes a master's degree in rocket science to do 3/4 of the time (I'm not stupid, paccars are a PAIN to start up again), I'll finish off with topping off the other fluids as needed n take care of tread depth n psi check. Take care of paperwork n roll in the next one in

As a Tractor & Trailer mechanic for 30 Years I'd do some things a little differently, one being I also fill the oil filter housing with oil before replacing the cap,they will be dry upon starting and also suck up quite a bit of oil into the filter material before it's making circulation, also on the Davco filter I would recommend cleaning the see through housing before installing the o-ring while also cleaning the threaded ring thourghly. That's where the dirt builds up around top side of o-ring , Wich actually should be cleaned off some before removal ,but not cleaning that ring good you are getting dirt all over the new o-ring possible causing a seal issue and causing dirt getting in threads "Wich also should be cleaned "when reinstalling, but I also like to completely drain the complete Davco housing to inspect the bottom of housing Wich is also a water/ fuel separator and there will be ablack goopy fuel basically like a gelled fuel in the bottom of those housings most of the time especially when not addressed each service. That housing has a screw in stinger most of the time Wich is a water in fuel sensor that the gelled fuel accumulated on it causes a water in fuel code to come on and also defeat the purpose of having a filter, that gelled fuel if passed through isn't good on pumps, pick up pumps ,rails etc. Also just a personal preference after cleaning the threads on housing I will apply a small amount of grease or anti-seeze or basically just something to keep threads from seeking up with dirt in them and to prevent the aluminum threaded housing from corrosion. They can be like a overtightened screw on oil filter sometimes and destroy your Davco filter wrench . Well I guess I will watch rest of the video now, lol not trying to bash you guys at all , just throwing my two cents in and sharing "preventive maintenance" tips on my experience with problems that can arise and prevent them. Like road call for a Davco filter sucking air ,lol have seen it happen a lot , I also am always looking at everything on truck and around area I'm working in like the fuel lines on housing / going to it from tank / to the motor make sure there not damaged or rubbing, looking at steering column, air lines anything in area . After 30 years I can spot problems or future problems easily . It's easier and cheaper to address things before it becomes an expensive problem like I always stress it's call a PM "PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE" LOL

what I use to check diffs and most transmissions is a square 5/8 socket in 1/2 inch drive I bought mine off Amazon for like $7 and I take my ratchet incase the plugs are actual 1/2 in drive. that way I take one tool to do it faster rather than 2. I don't do these motors too often. most of our customers have Peteerbilts with Cummins isx or a intercraptional with the Detroit's. love the vid man keep doing you 💯🤘

+Kevin Garcia thanks for watching. Most of our trucks were bought used from a fleet and the square plugs are males and they screwed them up before we got them so we have to use the fit all wrench. On the trucks we have that haven’t been mangled we use the square sockets on them but they are few and far between haha. Got to love those Detroit engines .... especially the 60 series man those 12.7 were some good ones !

I know Cummings inside an out. Tell me your opinion on that paccar motor. I'm looking at buying a peterbilt in near future. Cummings = Eaton fuller autoshift . I hate it . Paccar = Paccar 12 speed autoshift. I like. . I can get a Cummings worked on almost anywhere. I heard paccar is dealer only. Could use some advise
@KoonTrucking
@KoonTrucking 6 жыл бұрын
Well first off it is Cummins without the g, but I am not a fan of a Cummins engine. Yes I know they have power and easy to service and parts are more available than paccar engines but I’m not a fan of the lifespan and frequency of inframes Cummins require. I want a motor that will last longer than 500-700k before needing an inframe. We have had great luck out of paccar engines, they are reliable and get decent fuel mileage, not hard to work on. The downside to them is you will need oem software, parts aren’t as easy to come by because some are proprietary to paccar so they are dealer items only for a few more years until the patent wears out. The after treatment is a Cummins so you will have the same issues as any aftertreatment. Overall I am very happy with the life cycle we are getting out of the trucks. We have a strict maintenance schedule we stick to changing oil every 20k at most (average is 18k on changes) and we have had very few mechanical failures not emissions related. I am not a fan of the Eaton autoshift at all. We have 2 Kenworth t680 and they are always something with the trans in them and they are just barely out of warranty. In fact we WILL NOT purchase another auto truck period, we have spent a bunch of money keeping these trucks on the road. A standard trans will give you less trouble and when it does go out on you, you can move the truck where an auto shift if it is stuck in gear will give you fits (been there and done that, wasn’t fun at all)

Koon Trucking at this point with my current job it wouldn't take a lot, always looking for something better and more steady, the place I'm at now isn't looking to promising seems like they're going to close the doors very soon. I used to do minor work with my dad on his fleet up until 2009 and enjoyed every second.

Viscosity or performance of oil in relation to temperature is a major factor between apples to apples oil. It is common for OEM literature to recommend different viscosities of oil depending on the trucks environment and usage, i.e., trucks running to a rock quarry in a cold area may benefit from a different viscosity oil than list on the cap of the vehicle. Consider the vocation of the truck and decide maintenance needs accordingly, the owners manual usually has some good tips for whatever job the vehicle will be doing regularly. Keep in mind that there are lots of other components, oils, and consumables to tweak service intervals on depending on vocation and usage. Good luck, and keep on throwing wrenches at the wenches!
