Overtone Singing - Wolfgang Saus

Overtone Singing - Wolfgang Saus

9 жыл бұрын

Wolfgang Saus sings two melodies at the same time: bass & soprano of Pachelbel's Canon simultaneously. It's a short demonstration of polyphonic overtone singing skills (sometimes referred to as throat singing) used in special new classical compositions.
The interesting thing about doing this with overtone singing is: the melody was always hidden in the overtones of the bass voice. Many ancient composers intuitively created "harmonic" melodies out of overtones of a basso continuo.
Painting: „Aachener Farbflügel-Altar” by Günther Beckers.

This is the best and clearest example of the "double voice" that I know of. Just 43 seconds long and it is obvious that a kind of "musical miracle" is happening !

@@mjd4174 : Yes, she is very impressive too. Her videos are a lot longer and also excellent; mostly more informative. Other amazing overtone singers include Miroslav Grosser, Christian Bolman, Nestor Kornblum, and their are others like the members of the Barcelona Overtone choir. I have been working my way slowly with these and other overtone sounds since about 2009. They also include the Tuvan styles, throat whistling, and chant whistling. I do not use them often and mostly sing with much more ordinary Baritone voice.

@overtonesinging
@overtonesinging 7 жыл бұрын
Finally someone askes this question! Thank you :). This is a trick that demonstrates how our ears adapt to our expectations. In the scores (www.oberton.org/portfolio-item/pachelbel-canon/) you see that I lower the fundamental note by -43ct. That lowers the 5th harmonic by the same amount and then is accepted by the ear as a minor third. The minor third in just intonation is 14ct higher than in the equal tempered system, anyway. That makes it easyer to fool the ear.

Thank you for the explanation! It makes total sense and now that I hear it with more care it´s easy to understand how it is possible to do it, absolutely amazing technique :) Impressive how the brain falls for those tricks! @@overtonesinging Wow, great question and great answer. I've got a question of my own. Is overtone signing the same as whistling-while-singing. For example, I can whistle double-high G on its own, and then introduce an "ooo" sound three octaves higher, then cut out the "ooo" sound while continuing to whistle the same note.

@@overtonesinging Amazing! I was just thinking about all the neural activity when you're signing both tones. From what I've gathered, overtones are registered on the right side of the brain, but so is the motor cortex for your left hand. So you're signing the fundamental tone while listening for the overtone with one hemisphere and vice versa. Perhaps the ultimate in patting your head while rubbing your belly. 🤭

@@joewallace9030 You're absolutely right. The video is an exercise for my advanced students. The hand choice is intentional. In my experience, polyphonic skills develop more sustainably and quickly when I let students display the harmonics on the right and the root notes on the left than when I flip the sides. I still make them practice both variations.

No, I don't copy Mongolian throat singing. Traditional Central Asian throat singing has limited polyphonic capabilities. It only uses one constant fundamenal. Thus you can't sing this song in traditional style. Many people do not know that occidental polyphonic overtone singing emerged independently from Asian throat singing in the 1960s.

@overtonesinging
@overtonesinging 6 ай бұрын
Anyone who can speak can easily learn this singing technique. You don't even have to hit the right notes because the overtones always sound pure. You learn it in five stages, which take anywhere from 5 minutes to 12 months. So it's much quicker than playing the piano ;). You can stop at any level and have fun. 1) Learn to hear harmonics in voices, www.oberton.org/en/hearing-test-saus/ (5 minutes). 2) Learn tongue positions that amplify your own harmonics (1 to 12 hours). 3) Learn to control overtones and sing simple melodies (takes a few weeks). 4) Learn to sing one melody with your voice and another with your overtones - polyphonic overtone singing (3 to 12 months). 5) Develop your mastery (the whole rest of your life). Visit my website www.oberton.org/en/ if you learn to know more.
