Hey, Frozen! I'm a few weeks behind, but on Episode 33 you asked whether we wanted town videos. I vote YES, here's why: I'm watching for the whole thru-hike experience and town days are part of that AND I think for your own sake (and maybe even your family & kids) you'll appreciate having those videos to help you remember & tell the complete story. I also enjoy & think you'll be glad to look back on videos of people you meet or even just come across or pass along the way. It gives a better idea of what hiking the trail is like (ie are there many people out on trail or are you and Bigfoot the only ones out there some days?) I'm enjoying your content & apologize for the lengthy comment! Hike on!!! You've got this!!

I am so impressed! On the AT, you began the trail expecting to do it alone, but finally embraced a tramily who became lifelong friends. This year, you began the PCT with the expectations similar to the AT, connecting every footstep and staying on trail the whole way, and now you are embracing the unique circumstances of the PCT and embracing the improvisation necessary to navigate the trail safely. You seem so much more relaxed and enjoying your journey, obstacles and all. The trails change people in so many different ways. Finish strong Frozen!

You definitely made the right decision! The fires in the West are brutal and unpredictable. There is so much tinder that dried out during the droughts they've had for years. I was on a backpacking trip in the RMNP in 2018, a year and a half after our trip, The East Troublesome fire jumped over the mountain we were camped at the base of from Grand Lake into Estes Co. It completely annihilated every step we had taken on that trip. Bigfoot and you are right in thinking it doesn't have to be a continuous footpath to be a thru hike. That's what adventure is all about, you need the mindset that things might not go as planned, adjust and make the best of it. What an adventure it has been! Just stay safe!

I think the sound is the real Big Foot!! That is a crazy amount of snow on July 17 in Oregon!! Scary to be so close to a fire and watch it grow!!!! I'm a Cali resident and ask the same question, why didn't they bring in a helicopter with a water bucket when it was really small??? Never have gotten a satisfactory answer, budget.... So eerie how the sun colors are affected by the fire!! It's a long day, better safe than sorry! Glad your wife was able to update you!! It's fine to miss some miles, it keeps you safe!!! Hats off to all of you, stay safe!!! It would be awful to be stuck in a fire, and take resources away from firefighting. Hitch in a boat 😆

Hey Frozen, it was nice to meet you and Bigfoot at Crater Lake! We were wondering if/when you might encounter the fire near Diamond Lake fire. We saw the lightning the night before and saw a little smoke while driving to Carter Lake the next day. On our way back to diamond lake, they were doing air drops and we actually had to evacuate that evening. Crazy stuff for an east coasterner….so glad you guys made it around the fire. We were thinking of you!!

Maybe a successful completion of the PCT should be considered total miles hiked based on official fire closures that particular year, not just a line on a map and consecutive footsteps.

As of today, there's 97 fires burning in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. Here near my home town, we have the Rimrock Retreat and Black Canyon fires burning here in Washington. Fire resources are spread thin. They have to priorities those near structures, etc. Highway 12 is closed on the eastside of White Pass where the PCT crosses. Fact of summer life here in the PNW.

@reesesalen5033 Human cause and thunderstorms are just a couple beginnings.
@garyblack2858
@garyblack2858 4 ай бұрын
@@reesesalen5033 Here in Washington and Oregon, many of fires are caused from human carelessness like campfires left unattended or not drowned out, sparks off chainsaws, motorcycles (dirt bikes) welding equipment, and cigarettes tossed out. Although the Pacific NW doesn't get many thunder and lightening storms, they do cause a fair share of the fires especially in the deep mountainous forest. I am 65 and there are way more fires these days than the 60s, 70s, 80s. More laws now that won't allow people to clear the forest of downed trees, etc. Therefore giving fires a lot of dry timber for fuel.

In 2018 I had smoke from around Etna all the way through Oregon. I didn't have to skip any trail though. I camped in the same area you did after Crater Lake and had a cold night too. I'm glad you were able to make it past the fires safely. Hopefully that continues. Thanks for sharing your hike.

Be safe and get through! It’s like the trail has just turned into an escape room puzzle and it’s about wits as much as stamina. Every year the trail will be different. Having rigid expectations never works in any part of life!!

Alot of dry lighting strikes in southern Oregon. Lightening strikes are monitored over a three day period. A fire can start within that time. Your lucky your as far as you are because so much of that part of trail now closed.

Now just think of how much better your story will be. No fires = you get to tell a tale of a beautiful long hike. But with these you get to add dashes of adventure, and daring amidst all the beauty. Think how boring the Odyssey would have been if Odysseus just made it home on the first try.

I’m a firefighter of 30 years. NOT GLOBAL WARMING THATS PROPOGANDA. It’s cause man stopped all fires in the past 25 years to “ save the forests”. And millions of miles built up duff and small trees and now it’s burning. If we’d left nature to do its thing instead of interference we wouldn’t be having these huge fires. Boots on the ground experience real life not propaganda!!!

The reason you aren't seeing planes attacking the crap out of these fires is because these western states would rather spend money elsewhere. Canada will lend us some planes every now and then, so that's nice. Forest management and infrastructure should be a top priority, but nah. Safe travels.
