I was hired at a fabrication shop, I told them I've mainly only ran MIG, they threw me on tig doing stainless pipe. I actually made some decent looking beads but they were grey as hell. This channel rules!

Color = contamination, Gray is how you want your welds to be. Art projects is what this video is about
Try maintaining your travel speed after extinguishing the arc and following through. No need to lift you lid or oxidize your filler.

Awesome stuff Dusty! I don't do a lot of stainless due to the cost, majority of my customers just go with carbon steel, however when I do I like to see what different colors I can get. This video will definitely help! cheers man!

I came here to learn about the different colors but after seeing how you handle the filler rod i think you made my welding class that much easier. I will have to try holding the wire to the side rather than in front.

The thickness of the material will effect this, also if you've been welding and the plate or component is already warm or hot, will play in how much post (or not) is needed. There are charts that tell what color forms at a given temperature although while welding we don't know the temp, still you can keep an infrared thermometer on hand and check the part as it's being welded. After all that, hood time and practice as always will help the operator to "know" when to remove the torch. Having access to the force can't be down played here too. 🤣

How'd you go?
@thatjoshwright5577 Жыл бұрын
@@funkymunky7935 it’s pretty easy. Working on my 3g v-groove right now. Got overhead visual and bend in all positions and that’s all I have left for this semester. My favorite type of welding for sure.

Fantastic breakdown and video quality. How durable are these colors to elements? Cleaning chemicals or anything else they could come into contact with while on display?
@Muonium12 жыл бұрын
they should be extremely durable. it is a film of hard oxide coating similar to ceramic.

Is there a way to predict exactly what color you want, if doing artwork and you wanted blue or purple how do you know when you're going to get the desired color?
@mortenhansen34556 ай бұрын
I'm building a one off bicycle that I would love to dedicate to all the different metals. And this is exactly what I was looking for. I have a question though. Is it possible to get these colors, using another kind of procedure than welding? For instance I have noticed that the pot I cook rise in, has those colors. Is that the salt in the water coloring it, or ? ? ? . . .

That's all great and all that, but you're going to need a LOT of argon. Those big cups require more argon than you can ever imagine, more than it's practical. If you are doing art, and getting good money for it, that's one thing. However for those of us who are just practicing, or welding for work, just aim to not have porosity and have a good weld, not necessarily good looking weld. If it must be shiny for sanitary or corrosion reason, you can always electro polish it. You can do this with a TIG torch by the way with a modified collet and a specially made brush, and a special solution for this. This will clean the weld to completely silvery look and remove all oxides. Those big cups are really made for Titanium by the way as oxide will compromise the weld.

Can you please do a video of stainless lift arc stops so no pin holes form that will be a good video make sure we see puddle cooling down so we will see what’s going on ok take care and keep ‘em coming
@johnecker8474 Жыл бұрын
Forgive me if I am missing something. While those colors look great and all... Isnt it best if you dont have them? Since stainless steel loses all lot of its passiv layer attributes when it gets too hot and reacts with CO². Basically making those colored areas prone to corrosion.

Dusty, I was surprised to see you wearing a respirator under your welding helmet. Is there a specific reason for that; do you wear the respirator when welding mild steel or aluminium?

Colors are great for ART however colors crack. One of my customers does inducstrial HEAT TREATING/ANNEALING for many industries, he sent some before and after of Stainless Steel racing boat headers and I asked if they glass beaded them to remove the color... NO that is a by-product of heat treating/annealing, besides removing the oxides and sources of corrosion the heat treating has led to an increase in their service life by > 5 times compared to the same non annealed part. The hammering of the boats on the ocean causes welds which are not heat treated to crack at the weld edge where the base metal is overheated (at the base metal and weld pool margin)Bringing the entire part to

@harryeads5512 Жыл бұрын
I would guess he is using 1/16 based off the size of the Tungsten, which is more than likely 3/32..... Rods depend on what fills best in what you are trying to achieve.
