one word to describe the old Pennsy whistles: "mournful". i remember hearing those dulcet tones in the distance as a child, late at night, when the trains would pass a half mile from our house.

Whistle/horn battle what a sight to behold! I was just in Altoona a few weeks ago. I peaked inside the roundhouse at the museum, couldn't find no boiler in sight. There was a white tarp covering up the other half of the roundhouse. My theory is that's where there keeping the boiler!!!

I'm 26 now and remember seeing the 1361 in pieces in Steamtown when I was 13. From what I've read they seem to have spent hundreds of thousands on restoration using mostly a volunteer crew that never seems to exceed more than 3 people. Here's hoping that the 611 restoration gets enough money to participate in the NS 21st Century Steam program.

A few parts of 1361 are at Strasburg. The parts are returning to the museum to finish the restoration to operation. Despite what I have heard their website states this fact as of 2013

I would love to see 1361 and 611 return soon. I am sure they both will return. My fav is 4014 though. I live right next to the UP main and see the steamers every year. All I need to do is walk out my back door and see Big Boy 4014 steam by when she gets finished! That is the big news for steam this year but 611, 1361, and others news as well makes the next 5-10 years a rail fans dream time! Great time to be a railfan!

Money, as of right now over 2.85 million has been spent on the K4s project and at this rate it would be nice if they can just get it back in one piece now that the roundhouse in the Railroaders Memorial Musuem has the roundhouse under roof here in Altoona. Strasburg would have been the best move in the beginning but they had a long waiting period so Altoona opted for Steamtown instead and then fumble after fumble and over a billion later and no K4s under steam.
@Bassfanatic9414 жыл бұрын
I hope she is going to run again. Altoona needs her.

+Art Anderson The locomotive is at home in Altoona. Half of it is inside the museum's 7 stall roundhouse, the other half is in the old museum building across the turntable. Excursion hosts aren't hammered out yet, as the project is barely getting back underway (at least in the public eye). I wouldn't count the NBER (the former PRR Bald Eagle branch) to Bellefonte or even Williamsport out, though.

@CaptainDynamite11013 жыл бұрын
@imagreatbigman Unfortunately, no. Since they've been working on her for 13 years and almost 1.6 million dollars has been spent and no luck. I do wish they could've sent #1361 to Strasburg, and someone could pay it all, etc. sadly it won't happen, but at least we get to have her on a display and not scrapped.

excuse my ignorance, but what does a "shakedown" run mean?
@steeviepiranhaplant88365 жыл бұрын
Antonio Mendez A shakedown run is basically a run where a locomotive is going back to a country that it is supposed to go to. (Like a Designated Stop but from beginning to end)
@rudycarlson8245 Жыл бұрын
Shake down run is basically is to see if the Locomotive will move by herself after all the hard work put into it

Sadly, it doesn't sound like #1361 will run again. They restoration has cost too much and even if it is restored to running condition, where are they going to run it? Norfolk Southern, apparently, says they won't allow #1361 to operate on its main line. :( I'm very sad...
@Azwarrior9410 жыл бұрын
You have to remember that the Pennsy K4s ran from around 1914-1917 right up till the end of the steam era. As it stands right now, the 1361 is 96 years old. Which explains part of the rising restoration cost. The rest of the cost is due to the regulations the government has in place now in regards to steam trains(all of which never existed when the train was built). Chances are, when it was initially restored for that run, it didn't require nearly as much work to meet the FRA's requirements. Add to that there aren't many spare parts laying around for the K4s. Sadly, at this point, it is highly unlikely the 1361 will be steamed up anytime in the near future, let alone run on NS' main line.
@Azwarrior9410 жыл бұрын
***** Interesting. How much was the grant?
@KorraDaTrainBuff10 жыл бұрын
Azwarrior94 About the spare parts, isn't there a chance of scratch building? I know it could be costly, but it is possible, isn't it?
@Azwarrior9410 жыл бұрын
***** Really expensive, but yes. It is a possibility. Just need the designs for the parts in question and the money.
@KorraDaTrainBuff10 жыл бұрын
Azwarrior94 Good to know.
@Bassfanatic9414 жыл бұрын
@tachikoma747 I don't know, but it probably would be hard to do in their facilities. The K4 is a huge engine and by huge I mean monstrous. Also, their tracks probably aren't suited for its weight and it is very very very hard to keep a K4 with 80 inch drivers and superheaters under 30 miles an hour. Also, contracts probably would get in the way too.
@TomedysTrains7 жыл бұрын
Uggg. It's so annoying having to hear that diesel's horn. I love hearing #1361's whistle and watching the pacing shots, but not when it's interrupted by another train you don't even see. Even pacing videos from the steam era don't have the sounds of other trains in them, just the one you see on the screen.
