Thanks so much! This is the only video I have found that shows me how to put the slip lead on and use the stopper to keep the leash from coming off. I guess everyone else thinks it is obvious, but I didn't know. If nobody shows me how to get the leash on...all the videos about training do no good. So, once again, I appreciate that you are able to start by assuming the dog owner doesn't know anything about the slip lead, because....I didn't!

I loved everything about this EXCEPT when you talked about roller blading with a slip lead on a dog to pull you. I don't support the idea of using a slip lead for a dog to pull. That's what harnesses are for! Overall, good video though!

@UCtytCvAWdWkyuWRC0WQZK5Q he's explaining correct use of a slip lead so it's not 'potentially abusive'... I don't get it if you're trolling or not? * Even the 'positive' reinforcement cult swear by it's ethical standards... what's unethical is not having control of your dog, so it potentially hurts itself or another. My Husky is stable & happy I use a slip collar?! Gives dog accountability & autonomy as it corrects self, reward it with a 'loose leash, soft hands', so what's the problem with 'slip lead' & 'negative reinforcement' when ethically utilised?... It's better then a reactive, nuerotic 'dead dog' that runs in traffic because owner unwittingly irresponsible, can't control companion, or hesitant to use 'negative reinforcement' aid to save dog from doing itself a mischief, or harming others. I know I'd rather a happy alive dog, then a dead dog.

Great video. What I need is a video aimed at retraining a dog to leash walk. I had just started and she was learning well when I was hospitalized. She then walked for miles daily ( to many for a 6 month old) with someone that let her pull on leash , outfront and pretty much let her set the pace. I have hot been able to start again because of health and using a walker. I have had a bad couple of years and now in a wheelchair but I have someone willing to take me and dog to a walking trail. I would love some pointers on how to make this enjoyable for me, caregiver and mostly my beautiful dog companion. P.s. she is a energetic shetland shepard.

As soon as I see one of these is makes me shudder. I've seen so many dogs with damage from these. It is effectively a noose around the dogs neck, it is designed to choke. It is aversive, that's why is stops pulling. I trained my dog with the advice of a modern, qualified Dog Trainer on how to walk on a loose lead with the knowledge of how learning happens, why dogs pulling, how not to reinforce pulling and lots of short bouts of repetition. She taught me that the repetition is helping the dog to travel new neural pathways again and again so that they become so wide the behaviour becomes engrained. A bit like learning a dance routine, you practice it so often it is there without you having to think about it. It works and there was no need to choke my dog or make him feel any pain or discomfort. It showed what a great understanding of learning theory she had.
@PackLeaderDogs

The leash was not designed to choke and if you are choking with this leash, it is being used improperly. Remember, what matters the most is the handler behind the tool.

My dog tends to pull on which we are still working on daily for 4 years (he has some severe trauma i don‘t know where it comes from since he was found on the street) and I love to use a slip lead. Watching American (dog) tv shows, I noticed that many of those don‘t have any stopper preventing the dog from choking too much. In my country (Switzerland) it is actually forbidden to use a slip leash that doesn‘t have a stopper on the side with the loop. What are you‘re guys‘ experience and thoughts?

My 7 month puppy pulls so much! I was getting frustrated that no matter what I tried, it wasn't helping the situation. He's gotten bigger and stronger and I'm afraid that I'll go tumbling down 2 flights of stairs if not corrected. This random lady approached me yesterday at my dog park and suggested i do a makeshift slip leash. I tried it and saw immediate results. Got one off Amazon and now I'm hopeful that this will solve our pulling issues even with the older dog!

Slip leads used correctly are the absolute fastest way to make your dog walks calm and enjoyable. Does shovelling mouthfuls of treats into a dog to keep them in a heel position while walking work? 😅 You see it on KZbin only with always dogs that already walk fine, never an untrained pup. We make everything so difficult these days. Slip leads are a traditional training tool that work and work consistently

That’s what harnesses are for. But I really hate when people accuse slip leads as torture devices. They’re not. I’ve heard so many people talk about how you shouldn’t use a slip to correct pulling behaviors. It’s not going to hurt them. Even prong collars don’t hurt the dog if they’re used correctly. A regular collar is going to hurt them way more, because the pressure is completely focused on the throat whereas a slip or prong collar when used correctly applies even pressure around the entire circumference of the neck, minimizing concentrated pressure. I’ve put both of them on my own neck just to see if they were really that bad for a dog. They aren’t. They’re a tad uncomfortable, but painless. That’s the point. Add in some discomfort, and the dog will associate the behavior with that feeling. And yes, using it for trying to get your dog to pull you on roller blades would be sending some very strange signals and put them in a constant state of discomfort.

You can use a harness and many tools. The thing with harness is you can put maximum pressure and sometimes not influence the dog at all. That gets them used to pressure and pulling. I'd assess whether or not the dog is being fulfilled with enough mental & physical exercise. You can consider a back pack for higher energy dogs. Remember the tool is not as important as the understanding of dog Psychology and the handler holding that tool.

My puppy and I are going to be doing a training course soon and the trainer uses slip leads. I'm very torn because I'm reading conflicting info: 'slip leads are great training tools' vs 'slip leads are punishment based aversion training'. I'm so torn whether to go or cancel. The puppy seemed fine the first private session but I don't want to do any training that is actually 'punishment' based. But at the same time she's already 5 months and isn't trained much and I'm worried to keep lagging on getting her life skills in order. What to do??

That does happen on Young and short haired dogs - Lead slips down their slender Uni-Size Neck. So I have found as my pup has matured and her normal Collar that contains our Contact Info if Lost and her Rabies tag and License - That collar acts a stop. and helps hold up the Slip Leash. Other than that, just gotta keep it adjusted, continue readjusting.

Any advice for how to stop the slip lead sliding down the dogs neck? When I tighten it behind my american akita's ears it slides down to the bottom of his neck within practically a minute of walking. I've tried tightening it even more, shoving his fur/skin down past the rope and so far nothing is working. My american akita is a puller at the moment so really hoping to improve his walking with the slip rope, but if it keeps sliding down his neck i don't see it working and i can hear my akita gasping harshly by the time we get home. I thought a slip rope would be a solution that wouldn't involve the gasping/choking noises?

My dog keeps choking himself out ( not out out, just until he’s making choking noises) so that’s why I’m watching this tutorial.

I have a 16 pound, 1 year old poodle mix who is very reactive to other dogs when out walking. I have used the slip lead but have found it slips down her neck and out of position even though I have tightened the stopper, which has led to her chocking upon correction. Could it be the way I am holding the leash that allows for this to happen?

A slip lead is not going to help a reactive dog; it just adds more stress. Use distraction training instead. Look up the "Engage, Disengage Game"

My dog was trained with Prong collars because he doesn't care. I'm trying to transition him into a slip lead. It isn't going well.

The leash keeps slipping down my dog's neck to the middle. Is there a trick to keeping it up without having to tighten it so much?

It may mean you are pulling back or letting the dog go in front before applying pressure. Better to apply pressure up before they go in front or to the side if the get in front to create a more out of balance experience.

If anyone passes here and read that comment, any recommendation for slip on lead with a good stopper? I've tried a couple and so far they all slide down, the stopper is never holds position regardless on how much the dog pulls. Which essentially turns the leash into a choke collar and that's obviously not what I want. I'd like to control my dog, not to hurt him.

So middle of the neck is the best to break up a dog fight with no owner in sight?
