Paco Peña made me love Flamenco. And much as I love De Lucia, I deeply respect this guy's choice of not deviating from the essence of Flamenco. .. One of the great guitarists of all times.

Paco came to my little Artsy..yet Hillbilly town of Tryon North Carolina a few years ago. He was with a few other flamenco guitarists and some dancers both male and female. For two and a half hours we were spell bound beyond reason! Can't even put in into words.......Dale

@rufinosanchez27035 жыл бұрын

Music is not like technology, it doesn't have to advance, to put it simple if it is a masterpiece it will be timeless. Modern flamenco is great but why shouldn't traditional be great.
@abdelwahabflayinv95924 жыл бұрын
Fun hypothesis: both Chaabi and Flamenco are thought to have evolved in Andalousia, the two styles share a lot in common but each have distinct musical patterns, Chaabi is the most popular style in Algeria and, I think I have spotted in this piece patterns that are distinct to Chaabi (from 00:58 to 1:07) wich would imply that Peña inspired himself from Chaabi, hence the name Alegrias (wich also means joys), a little bit in the same way Fransisco Tarrega inspired himself from arabe rythmic instruments for writing Cappricho Arabe, when he was algiers the capital of algeria.
@sistalinda15 жыл бұрын
True. Similarities abound in so many types of music. The distinction is relevant considering the differing origins and repertoire. A dominant conversation is with respect to the particular, unique tradition of Flamenco as a distinct art form worthy of undiluted conservation. Other genre are influenced by Flamenco, but Flamenco remains conservative.

That Paco Peña plays traditional flamenco is his own choice. That you find him boring, ok, there's no accounting for taste. But your comment suggests, to say the least, that you find him boring because he has missed out on the evolution of flamenco guitar. And that is about the most stupid argument to dislike types of music. How boring Bach must be then, he has missed out on 250 years of 'classical music evolution'!

"The evolution of the flamenco guitar"? It's traditional, not something that is supposed to evolve. Times have changed and the Gypsies don't roam anymore, they live in housing projects. We're lucky to have Flamenco music at all.

Not technical enough??? His technique is unbelievable- to play even 5 seconds with the touch, sound and rhythm that he gets is beyond most very good guitarists- the way he colours and phrases the whole thing is unique as well. A lot of good players good play the notes but their technique wouldn't be good enough to get them to have the right effect.
@tmjcbs18 жыл бұрын
well, I think the role of improvisation is somewhat overrated: most pieces are often played about the same, with improvisation only here and there. But that of course depends on the players and the style: in the somewhat more complex pieces Pena plays, improvisation is more limited than De Lucia's playing, for instance. Defeinitely most of Pena's pieces are quite easily recognisable, especially by those who have his recordings.

Saludos.
