I was turned on to Leo, when I was a 17-year-old, c. 1981, living in Homer Spit, Alaska, working the graveyard shift at Seward Fisheries at the far end of the spit. My roommates were a group of upper 20-year-olds and lower 30-year-olds. Fond memories, now as a 60-year-old. Life is short.

Is the title about dated nails for railroad ties?
@tmjcbs2 ай бұрын
Leo Kottke wrote the following about this track in the liner notes of 6&12 String Guitar: "From an old Etruscan drawing of a sperm cell". But that doesn't really help in explaining the title...

That was magnificent! Why on EARTH did John Williams stop using Hernandez y Aguado guitars? His tone HERE is magical! What a gorgeous duet by them both!!!!
@tmjcbs6 ай бұрын
I agree the Smallman guitars he started playing in the eighties sound poor, but the guitar he used before that was a Fleta, not Hernandez y Aguado...
@Anton_the_Vampire6 ай бұрын
@tmjcbs yes, but the guitar in this video IS a Hernandez y Aguado. His Fleta was a Cedar top with a 3 arch headstock. If you've seen the recital that he & Bream did in the Wiltshire Chapel, that was on the Fleta. Julian Bream is using his Romanillos there, rather than the Hauser.
@tmjcbs6 ай бұрын
@@Anton_the_Vampire That's remarkable (for me at least), I stand corrected! I've never noticed that this is indeed a different guitar, the Fleta has a reddish top. Question: how do you know for sure this is a Hernandez y Aguado? The quality of this video makes identification almost impossible I would say. Just now I did an internet search and indeed Williams is mentioned as one of the guitarists who played a Hernandez y Aguado. Also I read his very early recordings (late 50ies and early 60ies) are made with a Ramirez guitar and most if not all of the recordings after that (and before Smallman) are made with a Fleta. Reading through some articles just now I read that Smallman admired Fleta guitars quite a bit and asked Williams how he could improve on them...I still wonder what went wrong in that process...
@Anton_the_Vampire6 ай бұрын
@tmjcbs thanks. Well, I'm a little bit of a guitar nerd, so I am very familiar with the headstock shapes of Ramirez II-III, Fleta, Hernandez y Aguado, Contreras II, Smallman, Romanillos, & Hauser. One of the biggest giveaways though is the tapa/soundboard colour. Like you said, the Fleta is reddish in colour; most likely Canadian Cedar. A yellowish colour is most like German Spruce.
