I discovered Paco Pena here on KZbin 1 or 2 years ago. He has changed me. I listen to all of these gems over and over again. He is a Living Treasure. All of the Masters are just that, masters. For me, Paco is my favorite by far.

Wow, I havent seen this since it was shown in danish TV in 1978. I was 14 and completely stunned. It made me start play guitar, though I never leaned to play flamenco. Its still a wonderful gem.

It is widely considered that Ramon Montoya invented this beautiful and sombre piece, and this is Paco's tribute to that great artist. For the Rondeña the tuning of the guitar is changed, the sixth string being tuned down a tone to D and the third a semi-tone to F sharp.

squirrelmaster89, NinoMig, elverdaderojavier & megabopp: The Rondeña is indeed considered Flamenco, and the form it's played in today was invented by Ramón Montoya (d. 1949), and recorded by him in 1936. The distinctive tuning (DADF#AD) was also invented by Montoya. All other versions, including Sabicas's, Paco Peña's and Lucía's, derive from Montoya. Montoya's definitive version is still available on CD. Paul Magnussen (Flamenco correspondent, Classical Guitar magazine)

That is a good guitar for his playing style. Since it's an unusual wood for traditional flamenco(cypress, sycamore) it produces distinct sweet warm tone, complementary to his playing..

@themosmitsos yes, Rondeñas with s at end is a kind of almost folk/flamenco style from Ronda and is a little similar to fandangos but this piece here is Rondeña and it is profoundly flamenco and dark and more similar to the mining lament called Tarantas

ole tio, paco de lucia ha modificao musha cosas, el flamenco puro en vez de evolucionar dentro de sí mismo ha involucionao con paco, bueno asi lo llamo yo, tal vez el flamenco-bossa.jazz de paco sea mas lindo para mushos pero eso ya no es flamenco, la esencia pura trae otros vestidos que no le pertenecen. El flamenco puede evolucionar dentro de sí mismo y conservar su pureza tal y como el maestro Segovia lo decía. Saludos.
