Rekordbox handles roll function so much better, imo. I wish Serato did it the same way. I recently played a B2B gig using my buddy's gear, a Pioneer DDJ-1000. Prior to the gig, he let me borrow his DDJ-200 to get used to the layout and features. I quickly took a liking to the rolls there using rekordbox Rekordbox will automatically jump to where the track is, meaning when doing rolls, the track is still actually playing underneath. So you don't have to worry about beatmatching. This allows for proper build-ups using roll fx. Super smooth build-ups, at that. Transitions were killer! Serato, you do a roll and it handles it more like a loop. The track isn't playing underneath, so it won't automatically jump to position. It'll just continue from wherever you did the roll. This makes performing a build-up really awkward and tedious. It's not smooth at all. It's clunky and I miss the smooth rolls on rekordbox

If feel like Serato is offering too much or doing too much when it comes to saved loops compared to Traktor; maybe it's with this particular controller. In Traktor, a saved loop can take the place of a hot cue (1 cue out of cues for Serato). So in Traktor you have a total of 8 hot cues than can be used for either hot cues or saved loops with length, and they're gonna be colored coded with either 2 colors: blue for a hot cue or green for saved loop; so you don't get confused which hot cue is which (which is another gripe of mine I have against Serato with all of their colors just for hot cues but maybe theres a setting for that). Cue loops and auto could've just been done away with a single knob freeing up pad 2 modes or a pad mode button. If this controller had a section dedicated to the looping system for Serato instead of using up some of the pad modes (or just make use of a single knob for cue loops and auto), it would make it less confusing. This controller still seems interesting to use, especially with its dual screens, mpc style pads, its tight integration with Serato and the classic dj layout, but its looping implementation is a little bit of a turn off (and not to bash on Numark for a fine looking controller but it's probably the same for other controllers). Too bad the Kontrol s5 doesn't have mpc style pads, jog wheels and tempo faders.

I am so excited to receive this controller. I started with cassettes and vinyl, moved to CDJs (numark CDXs, Denon HS5500s, Pioneers, etc), anything I could get my hands on. Finally moved out of the country and needed something ultra portable and settled on the Novation Twitch, which has been loads of fun. 5 years of hard use and its dead now so I'm getting one of these badboys- looks like it does everything the twitch did with an additional 2 channels, platters, screens, and much more. Fucking stoked.
