5:41 Michael Bond, who wrote Paddington Bear's story, said he was inspired by the sight of Jewish refugee children arriving from Europe and London children being evacuated to the countryside during World War 2. A lot of the children arrived with "Please look after this child" luggage tags on. Still to this day the Paddington brand makes it their mission to regularly donate to and promote charities looking after vulnerable children everywhere. Its one of the many reasons why Paddington is one of the most beloved British characters ever.

I never knew that! I was just a kid in Canada that loved it. I grew up with my Mom reading the books to me, and I watched the 70s stop-motion series. I STILL love that!

When Paddington was first written people in Britain had real memories of the Jewish refugees saved on the Kindertransports just before WW2, and WW2 evacuees. The image of Paddington in a coat, hat and a handful of belongings evoked memories of that.

The original Paddington stories are classics, although the movie does a better job of making the human characters 3-D. Mr Brown and Judy are just as friendly as Mrs Brown from the start in the books, whereas here they both take time to warm up to Paddington. What is in keeping with the books is that nobody who meets Paddington is especially surprised to meet a bear in London, let alone a talking one.

Be appreciative that you now have the teaching that was denied to you while you were in grade school. "saw" is past tense. Does not belong with the hypothetical "if". Hypothetical is same as "contrary to fact". Past tense is not used, but the subjunctive mood. "If they were to see a talking bear", or "were they to see a talking bear".

This really is a wonderful movie and so positive. I do love the bemusement at how casual people are to a talking bear in this world. Also to answer your question. Jam is made from a fruit or vegetable and uses the whole fruit pulp, peel, etc. Marmalade on the other hand has to use a citrus fruit (lemon, orange, lime) and only uses the juice and peel not the whole fruit in its preperation. As I understand it.

As a 56 year old, I fondly remember watching the original Paddington TV show, which was shown on BBC 1, here in the UK back in the mid 1970's. In that show Paddington was the only animated 3 dimensional character. The others, including all backdrops, were 2 dimensional. The show ran from 1975-1980. It's not necessarily something to react to, but I do recommend you watch an episode just to see what it's like. All the very best 👍.

I remember so many thinking this film looked awful all because they marketed it with the earwax scene. And not gonna lie, that set off a few red flags for me as well. But then it came out, and it was one of the most charming films to come out. And to think it premiered in January, which is normally the dumping ground for Hollywood's leftovers. My only real gripe is that I feel like this story did not need a villain. Paddington is just one of those series that really doesn't feel like it should have on, you know? But even she's a fun character, so it wasn't enough to ruin the film.

Something I find interesting that no one seems to comment on is the elements of this film taken from other movies (It’s likely that they’re pop culture references and not plagiarism and I find then mostly enjoyable). The dinner scene involving a potential boyfriend named “Tony” is a reference to the Incredibles, the Geographer’s Guild is a reference to the Explorer’s Society with Charles Muntz and the Crazy Lady Taxidermist Nicole Kidman is a reference to Chantelle DuBois from Madagascar 3.

I'm assuming the voters recommended it based on the versions of childrens shows of Paddington more than this film, which so many of us grew up watching or reading books of. But man... I ate so many marmalade sandwiches when I was a kid, possibly inspired by this stop-motion cartoon. Not sure I ever found a great and accurate stuffed version of him, but the kid in me always really kinda wanted one, lol.
