Everything I know about kayaking I learned from Paddle Tales. I now kayak once a week and have done so for the last year. Thank you Ken.

Its probably easier to remember as going out to sea with red on your left since red represents the port side (left) and coming back in is the other way around.

Thanks again Ken. If you are in other parts of the world like Europe, the buoy colours are opposite. It’s red on the left when returning. The mnemonic is ‘is there any red port left’. Not quite as catchy as the North American phrase.

Wow... I didn't know that! Thanks David. My paddling in Europe has been limited to whitewater rivers.

Any tips on avoiding 12 year old boys who are unsupervised and on jet skis? How about wake boarders that are doing continuous loops around your canoe while blasting nu-metal from a giant sound system? Or yachts where the skipper has gone below deck to get yet another beer and left the boat to cruise full throttle in your general direction?

Not much different than being a cyclist and having to deal with a teenager texting and driving, the trucker who's falling asleep at the wheel, or a soccer mom in a land yacht SUV that has obstructed views. Societal decay is real and people want to pretend it doesn't exist. There are more registered boaters on the waterways than ever before, thanks to unbridled population growth and easier access to watercraft. There are more distracted users than ever before, thanks to technology that takes away operator skill and offers distractions. There is also less legal enforcement than ever before, thanks to declining standards of LEOs. There's also less public space today thanks to urban sprawl, causing more congestion of natural resources. The world becomes more of a shit show every day, and it's only going to keep getting worse. The best advice is get out there now and enjoy what little you can, because it's not getting better.

Ha! My advice would be to drive further and find some different water to launch in. :) Those are all nightmare scenarios... but unfortunately the reality of paddling in some places. Sorry you have to deal with that crap.
@mikeosborn50033 жыл бұрын
Yes that is the scenario on some lakes I just keep going in closer to shore. That usually works because I can go in many places they can't. One lake we go to has big dead head stumps and logs floating around I head straight for it and the boats usually turn around if not they are slowed down and busy plotting a course.

Very interesting and important topic, thanks! I have crossed many ports, some huge, and sometimes feel like a lost rabbit on the highway. Especially the fast ferries coming in and going out are to be aware off. Your channel defenitely deserve more views, keep on the good work!

Love these videos. Very helpful. Would it be possible to include in the description a list of the items you recommend? That flag/light thing - not sure what it's called or where to find.
@PaddleTV3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm going to try to do that more. That flag is called the 'Visi-carbon pro' and it's made by YakAttack.

Glad you enjoyed! There are a variety of kayaks being used in the video. Let me know which one you're interested in (time in the video and color) and I'll let you know what it is.
