I'm not even very old, but slipjoints and traditional knives feel like home. I have custom fixed blades, high-speed midtech and production folding knives, and autos, no doubt. But old school slipjoints will always call to me.

I've been collecting for about 10 years. Knives have improved phenomenally, across the board, during that time. If anything is bland, it's the glut of high-quality, affordable knives that are so readily available. It's an embarrassment of riches. How lucky we are.

Hey Paddy ☘️ Apart from being an ex. sailor, you also worked as an electrician, from memory, so putting an electricians, 'outer sheath' cable stripper on it, makes sense... Thanks for sharing, juddy, Gus 👍🏻

I’ve too been gravitating to traditional knives lately, Paddy. They have so much personality! I still carry my Spyderco Delica clipped to my pocket on weekends, but when I’m working I have a slipjoint in my front pocket. I recently got a SS Case Sodbuster in Mediterranean blue that’s gorgeous. I also got each of my boys a Rough Rider stockman; I think they were $18 each. The fit & finish on them are great!

I go to garage sales and find traditional Jack knives for literally a few bucks! The kind of knives that we all carried as kids. Most need a clean up and sharpening and they are useful and fun to carry and nobody is afraid of you carrying a Jack knife. Good fun Paddy. AND I have 3 RR that are damn good. I got an old Barlow at an estate sale $4 beautiful. And an Imperial Boy Scout knife $2! Like new, I love it and I wasn’t a Scout 😂

I saw a video from SMKW where they talked about this series of Rough Ryders and they said they did the double nail nick because that was something they got feedback from customers. I agree with you it's a bit much, but I still love that knife.

I have definitely fallen down the traditional rabbit hole!🕳️ I just picked up a RR Long rifle in red bone that’s just gorgeous never mind all the beautiful RoseCraft I have now and love them! I do have some modern knifes but some of the moderns seem to be cookie cutter similar shapes. I find myself pulling out a traditional knife to just admire it not so much with my modern knives. I do wish Rough Rider would eliminate the second match strike pull.

I drew up some collection rules a few years ago, just because my spending was getting out of hand. However, their are still knives I collect, and knives I buy. My collection will likely always be handmade Sheffield knives and Japanese made knives. I don’t collect expensive modern knives, but that doesn’t stop me from having a few, some of which I really love. No does it stop me from buying inexpensive factory made knives, from China or anywhere else, it just means that I don’t collect them. Whether they really excel is, as you say, is opening up my collection to The odd and unusual patterns that I might not want to spend a lot of money on, e.g. cotton samplèrs, of which I own several, but all rough riders. In the end though, I don’t need any persuading to buy traditional knive… that is where my heart always has been, and always will be!

I’m older than you Paddy and been collecting about 50 years now. I have a bunch of moderns like Chris Reeves etc . I prefer traditional knives. I have the entire RR spade series and they’re fantastic. Personally I won’t pay more than $50 for ones made in China . Over $50 I’m looking at ones made in USA, UK and Europe
