A watch is a sum of it's parts, and no more. Sapphire v Hardles, Ceramic bezel v Stainless, NH35 v 7s26, a far better bracelet. the Seiko a better water resistance and a better lume. In the UK the Seiko will cost you 4 times as much

I believe that this watch is the best affordable sub homage in the market. I live in a country with a very high dollar rate and of all those mentioned, the one that exceeded my expectations the most was Pagani, which has a Seiko NH35 movement (mine makes + -4 seconds a day) and great constructive quality under $70-$100. Own some high end stuff but the quality for the money of the Pagani still blows me away. Gets more wrist time than anything else. Seriously underrated and a great value prop.

Like your content, will likely hang around for awhile...LOL. I am a poor Canadian working slob, so my money would always go to the value and not uniqueness/original content. I have one PD watch (PD-1649), and one Seiko (SRPA21) My grail watch is the Seiko Save the Ocean SRPC91. (It is all about that dial). Most/all of my watches are cheap homage watches...I am a sucker for a watch with NH35/36 or an ETA with sapphire crystal with sapphire/ceramic bezel for under $250 Canadian...really cannot go wrong. Who cares if it looks like a Seiko/Tag/Rolex, AP...etc. Those will never be in my budget. My AddiesDive blue turtle homage brings a smile to my face everytime I wear it...Thanks for the video!!!

Very nicely done comparison mate, I personally don't mind homages as long as they're not too blatant in every aspect, the pagani has great spec and is great value but I'd still take the skx.

My story about lume: I took my 2 year old son on a cave tour in our area. At one point they shut off the lights so we could see how dark it really was down there. My son, who is usually pretty cool and collected for a 2 year old, began panicking. He already loves watches and clocks so i called his attention to my Pagani that was glowing. He was distracted long enough to make it to the end of the demo. You never know how lume will come in handy.

This may sound absurd but that Seiko is completely out of its league. The Pagani PD-1639 has a ceramic bezel while the Seiko SKX007 has an aluminum bezel. The PD has a sapphire crystal while the SKX has hardlex. The PD also has a much nicer bracelet (although I agree that the clasp is a major pain in the posterior). The crown is also in a better place on the Pagani than the Seiko (IMO). The only advantages that I see with the SKX are that it has fantastic lume and is more functional as a real dive watch. Seiko also can't claim a superior movement either because the PD-1639 comes with either the Seiko NH35A or the Miyota 8215. Both are Japanese workhorse movements that will give well over a decade of accurate and worry-free operation. The SKX is no slouch here (of course) but is also not superior either. If they were priced the same, I would still chose the Pagani. The fact that it's significantly cheaper only makes it a no-brainer for me

I love the skx but wished they would have come up with an worthy update. Talking 4r36, 200m and screw down crown. Still in comparison with the pD I would go all the way with the Seiko. Great Video brother, keep up the good work 🙏🏻😁👍🏻

Nice review. Pagani has good value but wished they were more original. They have the best materials for the price but I’m not a buyer simply because of ‘copying aspect’. The Seiko wins for me.

The SKX is a fine piece of work, but with some obvious shortcomings. I did a few very easy and cheap mods to correct these: a ceramic bezel insert, a domed sapphire crystal, and an NH-36 movement to replace the reliable but primitive 7S26. The first two cost $30 each, and the movement $35, and make all the difference in the world. I ended up with an SKX007 the way it should have been in the first place. I would advise anyone who thinks his SKX is ALMOST perfect to look into making these mods. There are loads of videos on KZbin explaining how.

Also should have mentioned that i like my pagani bracelet than my uncle seiko president...its more comfortable..has a substantial taper....and full solid links...the uncle seiko bracelet alone cost almost as much an the whole pagani watch...that being said if your budget is super tight or you want a fun disposable beater you cant go wrong with the pd

The Pagani Design is certainly a good value proposition. Currently interested their other homage watches but I’ve purchased too many in 2020. 😅 Seiko is on another level though, so expect to pay higher. Between these two, i guess deciding factor would be my budget.

Interesting head to head! Not one that I would have expected, while the skx certainly has its flaws & shortcomings it's just so iconic a proper tool watch. As for the pagani a full on spec monster for the $ but I do feel (wish) that pagani could make a really great watch if they just worked on their QC & maybe put something out that's Not a straight up homage. Great review, and you bring up some valid points. However the SKX has been discontinued, and what does Seiko do? They bring out their own “homage” in the 5KX. To me the quality of the watch is the number one criteria. By this measure the Pagani Design has the advantage. You did point out the hands being poorly cut, and that is unforgivable. It makes you wonder what else is sloppy about the watch!

SoCal Watch Reviews I agree. Those 5KX models are just a 5 series watch homage to the SKX models that carried the Seiko dive watch series for years. Have you looked at the Islanders from Long Island watches? I’d love to see a good unbiased review of those!

I’ve seen them, but I wouldn’t buy one. Love all the specs, but if I’m going to pay that $ I rather get into a vintage watch of a company that has some heritage. I just picked up my vintage Girard Perragaux and paid less than $200 for it! However from what I’ve seen, Mark did a fantastic job with those!

You can now get Chinese copies of the SKX and for 60 pounds, you can mod them with the SKX stuff and is the way to go if you want a case

SKX price has been inflated to a disgusting level, to the point that the watch itself starts to become a turn off for me. I've seen greedy sellers on second hand market mark up the price so high that they have a hard time selling the watch. That's why I would never buy a SKX because this watch has been tainted with greed. Also, Seiko as a brand is losing my respect. Pretty soon, they will replace all their original Seiko 5 line with more pricey fashion oriented watches.

I completely agree with you about this watch going up in value to the point that is no longer a value prop. I really hope Seiko realizes that their market appeal was the fact that they were making great watches at a very affordable price. However with them moving up market, yet not increasing the level of craftsmanship nor quality of their materials, it just doesn’t make sense anymore. Us watch lovers are a dying breed, with our effort, hopefully mechanical watches can stay alive and stay relevant. I know the stigma when it comes to homage and copies, but there's a value in them that they do help new comers to join the club by making affordable alternatives. Otherwise, the cost of watches will be too prohibitive for anyone who would like to try it out without selling blood or kidney or risking a divorce!

I have had the "submariner/hulk" PD for almost two years, Seiko Alpinist for one year longer. By now the lume on the PD is pretty much non-existant, and no way you can "charge" it under a desk lamp for example. Still, I consider the PD an extremely great value for the money, also the Alpinist is just way too small.

I just got my Pagani pd 1694 that has NH35... bezel action is great, for example on my seiko monster it is crap cause it has lots of backplay, lume on that new Pagani is 90% of my skx 007 almost ass god on dial but Pagani has lume on the bezel so it gets even better. Hardlex is crap... just pure crap... I got 5 Seikos and 2 of Citizens with Hardlexs ena every single one i scratched... the same goes for aluminium bezel insert... I never in a milion years could imagine I will say this but that damn Pagani just blows all of my Seikos out of the picture. ONly my Citizen aqualand feels kindof more solid and robust but than again it has a small scratch on the hardlex that just showed up after 2 days of wear its a huge watch and I just cant understand why they dont use saphyre... thats all... I dont know about pd 1639 but this lates version of pd 1694 is the cheapest and the best watch in my colection...
