Clicked this going “I know I’ve watched stuff on this before, and probably also at least some of the project itself, but which one is this again” and was immediately reminded that ah yes, this is the one with the frankly unsustainable amount of disappearances. As a Native American I appreciate the disapproval of stereotyping our cultures and using us as crutches in horror, MVTO / thank you! Edit: For all my native siblings, if you haven't yet, you must check out Jeff Barnaby. He is a native horror film writer and director! He already has some great films out. My current favorite is Blood Quantum, a zombie film with inspiration from the walking dead.

I think lots of general horror and analog horror most recently have attempted this without making it make sense. The only recent examples I can think of that make the most sense were the Wendigo enemies in Until Dawn (human like and feral, not the animal headed figures of pop culture), and "Skinwalkers" from Gemini Home Entertainment. GHE's use was a misunderstanding of what the campgoers were seeing when seeing the Bear (The Wretch) that had been sacrificed to The Iris/Strange Dressed Men in place of a human and other Woodcrawlers in the 1930's and 1940's.

I can certainly see the points of inspiration for this series in some places - Julianna's sequence resembles the miner's calls in Greylock - but also a lot of passion. Though the scares start out amateurish in their use of loud noises and distorted faces, I find that as the series goes on, they become more explainable. With the way the antagonists communicate with their victims, it's like the supernatural forces are matching the often brutal and sudden way self-hating thoughts/impulses can manifest. The word that kept coming to mind when I was watching was "vicious". I would prefer if they toned down the volume spikes a little, and added in-video content warnings. (Which is strange - I recall seeing one in the title and comments for video 2 when I first watched it, but now there isn't.) I also agree with your sentiment at 40:39 about the handling of indigenous culture in horror. Fortunately, the eighth question down on their Q and A post from three months ago asks about Indigenous Mexican involvement on the team, to which the creators answered that they were of indigenous descent. While this cannot be taken as a *guarantee* that certain tropes won't come up, this at least points to an awareness and insight into whatever aspects they choose to portray. Overall, I'm somewhat optimistic.

I normally wouldn't support mental health issues being a forefront in a horror series, given stigmas, but i feel like they did... pretty well, honestly. The lowest point in the series for me is how gabby's friends are protrayed, they seem like honestly awful people and i don't know how one could associate with them. But that may be my autism not understanding social constructs.
@exist4046
@exist4046 7 ай бұрын
unfortunately ‘friends’ not taking mental health seriously is a genuine issue, esp with people who try to stick around groups that are ‘popular’ just to avoid being picked on. some of those people just dont actually care about them, and its really fucked up. fortunately ive never experienced that (im too autistic to ‘settle for’ people who are gonna treat me or others like shit) , but i know it does happen

Very good video!! I appreciate the little jokes you get to drop in the video and the mindset you have around indigenous culture being used in horror. I don't take much issue with these kinda series, every now and then it's nice to return to some cliches. As the series goes on the quality of the scares and quality does get better so I think the more time goes on the better things will get. Something I think is really interesting is that it seems this "group" in the forest only targets women, atleast so far. Jake only died because he went in looking for his sister Alex. Plus, during the slides talking about the victims at that point 14:22 it says specific things about the girls, that they were sad, and that "we made eachother whole" message, but for Jake? It says he got too curious, which makes me feel they only killed him because he was too close to figuring something out or was just in the way. Later on at the whole behind the white door thing it says Jake's body is in there, not everyone's bodies. So is Jake the only one they found? Are the other victims still in the forest? Just something to think about.

This could be a weird stretch, but I remember a song in the early 2000s maybe? That sampled some statistics on self termination. The one that kept repeating and I remember was "One death every 40 seconds". Maybe a weird, obscure coincidence, but with some of the themes of mental health issues, people and organisations ignoring the hugely problematic statistic, and the lack of concern. It might be an allegory for that. Edit: Just heard the truth or dare question about exactly this statistic about 1 minute after I posted this. So, maybe not as much of a stretch as I thought. Edit 2: Also Lexiprox? There's an antidepressant called Lexapro. Brain just too slow to putb it together at the time.

I am glad they took the extra steps to actually get an actual phone number and didn’t just put a random phone I don’t remember which arg just used a random phone number and actually lead to a sex phone line

It's not just self-harm, mfers literally are using gender violence as a story vector. There's something about the disproportionate victim count leaning towards women/individuals socialized as women that makes me wanna pass on this one. Gender violence much?

I'm in my 40s and I still can't bring myself to watch a horror movie. But, I love analog horror. Please... make it make sense. 🤣

Hey Pagan, there's an analog horror that you might have not heard of. It's called "Neko's analog horror". Can you please analyze it, please?

Hear me out: What if the symbol is to appease the slender man? I know it's cheesy and no one uses him as a series anymore, but I think the symbol on the head combined with the disappearances makes it feel like they are trying to appease him. The wishing tree could be swapped out as well, but I think it seems too similar for it to be a coincidence.

I know this is a rather..... poor example of analog horror imo, but honestly that really shouldn't take away from this being a creators attempt to try and make something good.

I think if anything this would be more enjoyable without the like, ridiculous edits, stupidly distorted audio, flashing and such. it makes it less scary to me, harder to understand, and even gives headaches. I don't think it adds anything to just be a sensory assault.

Jumping up cursing in the middle of the night, caused by your eardrums get crushed all of the sudden into your Brain throug your headphones😖. That is truely is delicate spice able to give jump scares a peculiar touch some are craving for so deep i suppose.- Well i do, but im a weired freak.
