I have neurofibromatosis! I never see anyone who has it. I have several internal tumors, and hundreds all over my body, especially all over my torso. The doctors told my mom that I wouldn’t live past my 5th birthday (I’m 48 years old) they said I could never have children (I have two kids, who thankfully do not have NF). I am a three time cancer survivor, and I’m fighting stage IV spinal and intestinal cancer right now. In January of 2014 my oncologist said I had less then a year to live. I just keep defying the odds. I have a pretty “normal” life, although I have to admit, it can be so hurtful when people stare at my tumors. I have a few on my shoulders, and some on my face, and there are times I look at myself and cry, but I just try to remind myself that I’m blessed to be alive.

I pray she keeps on fighting to bring to light that there is not just one kind of beautiful. I have both severe scoliosis and NF1 too! I am a triplet, and the only one with these conditions in my family. Both my womb-mates are strong and healthy. I was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 4 and was diagnosed with NF1 shortly after. When I was 6 I had my first spinal surgery, when I was 7 I had my spine fused with Herrington rods (they're titanium but I am a nerd so I tell people they're adamantium) and I was placed into halo traction while I recovered in the hospital for 3 months. When I was 8 I had to have a revision to the spinal fusion, again placed into halo traction. It was at this time I had my first neurofibroma removed and since have had over 30 surgeries to remove the largest and most painful tumors. I am 24 and currently attend classes at my local junior college. I am enrolled in the culinary arts program and I love it. Even though I am not enrolled full time because just taking the bus to class is exhausting and it is incredibly painful to be up and on my feet for hours at a time the sense of independence I get makes it worth it. I greatly appreciate it when my classmates and teachers don't give me special treatment or make me feel like I am incapable of doing something without even trying it first. I also like when people see past my tumors. I honestly thought that once I graduated high school I wouldn't be made fun of by my peers. However not too long ago I was at Ross I hung a sweater I decided not to purchase when a woman who looked to be about my age went to grab said sweater, her friend swatted her and away and said, "Ew! Are you crazy?! Don't touch that! She could be contagious!". Despite growing up with my two brothers and a their friends who would never shy away from an opportunity to tease me it still hurt my feelings. As much as I try to not let comments like that get to me I am still human, my feelings get hurt much like anyone else. My condition has worsened with time, looking at photos of myself from even 5 years ago can be upsetting at times. I don't think I will ever get used to someone seeing an older pic and not believing me when I say it's me in the picture. I have never seen or met anyone with NF1, I can not afford the cost to sign up for the annual Neurofibromatosis Walk so I miss a great opportunity to meet and network with other people who have NF1, or who have family members with this condition. It is always fascinating to watch clips and videos that have interviews with people who have this condition. To me there are so many varying degrees of severity it almost has a snowflake effect where very few cases are exactly the same. Thank you for uploading this video!
