There are Library Cats all around the world and there is the Library Cat Association. The libraries that have cats have noticed increases in the number of children coming in to read books and story time attendance has increased due to the cat giving affection to the children and making them calmer. There are many reasons to support a library cat and they have everything to do with keeping libraries successful.

It’s a huge part of expanding the role of our libraries. Books and internet access are ubiquitous in our world; so what is the library going to be now? I think they have to expand to be centers of learning and encounter; the kind that you don’t get at home. Idk what that looks like exactly, but a cat here and there doesn’t hurt. Lol

As a little kid, my family had two cats. A friend of my dad's (who was allergic) would come over occasionally & take an anti-histamine. No problem.

I had a bookshop in Ohio wherein shelter cats were fostered and then adopted by customers. More than 50 were adopted from my shop over the years. I then wrote a series of novels about the experience (Shelve Under C is the first) to encourage other shops to look into fostering dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. The business that took over my location continued to foster, thankfully.

I'm allergic to cats, but love them. We have a cat, we just give her a bath every week. I know cats don't like water, but they CAN get used to being bathed. I'm voting for Pages!

It’s a tough decision, to be fair. I have your standard allergies but I love cats so much that I would rather punish myself than the cat (humans are strange). But for someone that can become very ill, is the cat in the library the best thing? It’s a tough issue because people love the cat, clearly. Animal relationships are incredibly important in our social lives. But health concerns are also a factor. I realize your comment is nine years old so I hope you are well!

Cats and books are a natural fit. I can't count the number of newsstands, used bookstores and libraries that I have seen with a resident cat.

I'm allergic to animal dander but I wouldn't give up my cats for anything. They are such a joy to have around. Maybe this person could call the library ahead of time to let them know they are coming so the cat could be moved to an out of the way location so the patron wouldn't be bothered.

I support the cat. Some objections are reasonable. perhaps surgical masks for those with breathing problems. The cat has a soul and overall is helpful in establishing reasons for visitors.

Don't get rid of pages, set up a section of the library in a room, or behind a gate, and restrict access to people with a card. Use a card reader on the door, or gate, and include a list of allergies in the patron's info.

I love cats, I have one that I've had for seventeen years, I Iike the idea of a library cat, but people with allergies do have the right to expect to use facilities that their taxes help to pay for without being miserable in the process. If there's any way to reach a compromise, though, I sure hope that they can do it.
