OK, having made these, here's some thoughts. After trying every recommended means of cutting styrofoam, I got the best results using the carbide tipped blade in my table saw. Set the rip fence, and away I went. Left a smooth edge. That being said, there is also some atmosphere gained from these being less than perfect. Before assembly, I insered a bolt protruding through the top tp give me a purchase for setting pumpkins, etc. I can actually lock down anything that I can reach inside of. I also put a 12" x 1/4" threaded rod through both sides as a place to secure the "chains." It's a lot sturdier arrangement than the nail shown in the video. I also drilled a 1 1/4" hole in the base, so that the whole rig slips down over a steel fence post. Finally, for finish, I used an acrylic paint, then dusted the surface with a lighter stone textured spray paint. The base protects the foam from the volatile compounds in the spray and allows for an even finish. Bought my "chains" at Dollar Tree for a lot less than a Halloween store and used a heavy nylon fishing line to further reinforce them. Hopefully this will give anyone attempting this something to think about. The end result is pretty cool. Have fun!!!

Nice! I actually just finished putting all my stuff up. I too tried all cutting methods. HA My dremmel was the cleanest cut for me b/c I don't have table saw. And I actually just screwed in the plastic chain to attach. Looks great!

This was neat how you made these. I’m thinking I can make my own fence. Thanks for sharing. I’m realizing there’s so much I don’t know and still need to learn. All I need to do to get them distressed is tell the kids in my family, don’t mess with the posts or touch them and they’d be perfect by the time I returned home.

Adam Kirschenmann best method I found was to use a small dremmel saw, then hit to break it. Was the best way to keep a straight line. You could use a table saw or circular saw as well

The instructions do not provide the simple dimensions required for this build. I used random pieces I already had on hand and really needed the actual dimensions. From the look of the layout on the sheet at 1:18 of the video you can see how it is cut from an entire foam sheet. For a set of 4 pillars: It looks like 2" foam in a 4' x 8' sheet The top and bottom squares are 12" x 12" (you'll need 8) The sides of the pillar are each 6" x 3' (you'll need 16)

somewhat true however if you figure that the top/bottom piece is 12 inches and you see that there are 2 pieces of side to each one that would mean the long side pieces are 6 inches each, when you box them together it ends up making it 8 inches per side when all completed

I made two pillars but my dimensions are different because I wanted mine taller and wider. I purchased the foam at Home Depo for $37. Used 3 inch screws and gorilla glue. After painting the pillars with simple house paint I had left over. I used tent stakes to hold down my pillars. I bought my chain from dollar store. I also screwed in battery powered lanterns/hooks to the front to make it look like it had lights. Very easy project and under $80. People sell these pillars using the same foam on Etsy for over $200-$300. Works great in the rain too. Just dry them off after.

It is actually more than 25 bucks. An 8x4 2" runs $32.00 at Home Depot, Plus the paint is 12 bucks if you go with exterior sample size (4), the solder gun is $20.00. , Gorilla Glue is $17.00 (I went with Power Grab construction caulking adhesive and saved money and it works better with the board 8-9 bucks), Caulking gun 20.00 bucks. So roughly 80-100 dollars if you have absolutely none of the stuff. I am not sure where she is getting the 25.00 dollars from. I will also say it takes time to measure out all the boards. I measured then used a Chalk line to get it done quicker but doing that and cutting the board (use a cordless saw, much quicker) took me about an 1 hour on 1 board of just measuring and cutting. I will work on the gluing tomorrow. Don't forget to wear a mask if you do use a saw, you don't want to breathe all those little particles in. If you have a deep razor blade, that might work too but your cuts are harder to keep straight.

You can get a Hot Knife from Harbor Freight that will do the work of the soldering iron, the flat iron (for the texture), and you can even cut and distress the edges with it. $19.99. I used them for set design for school plays & dances. Made more than a few "stone" walls and arches with it. Well worth the 20 bucks.

I don't know where you guys are shopping but there is no way your breaking the bank with this one. Find damaged panels at your supply store and they are usually half price and still they can be talked down on price. Go to your local rehab store ours is called the Restore. Brushes, paint and all kinds of other stuff at really cheap prices. Make your own pumpkins out of recycled materials. Super Easy! You would also be amazed what people have laying around that you can get for free. Craigslist is a good source for this one. Good Luck and Happy Holidays.

she describes all of the dimensions in the video and shows a pic of the board with all the markings. if the top/bottom are 12inches by 12 inches, then that means there's 3 feet left for the length of each shown at 1:16 of the video. You can also see that there are two length pieces per top/bottom, which means 12 inches divided by 2 equals 6 inches in width per pillar and 3 ft per length as mentioned in my previous sentence.

Do not use a real candle on top of your pillars!! Would be very dangerous!! Spray your 'Stone Pillar' with glue all over, put sprinkle with sand, gently pat down, shake off excess for a textured stone feel over light gray & darker gray paint. Could use false bricks sheets, cut to measure and use a couple very cheap cans of hair spray to help water proof better.
