Hey guys! Little update since I filmed this. The fabric you can use is called monkscloth. Punch needle will not work on calico. I’ve left a link in the description to the fabric I got on amazon but if you are searching in the uk try The Village Haberdashery as well for official monkscloth, it’s not cheap but worth it to get good quality (from what I have experienced since making this). Another question I get a lot is how to finish them so that the threads don’t come out or loose. You can use interfacing iron on fabric on your ‘back’ (the side you don’t want to show). As well as this you can just back with felt if it’s for wall art & with a tight punch needle weave (lots of them next to eachother) they shouldn’t come loose because the fabric weave is designed to hold the yarn in place. I hope that helps! :) xxx

I ordered the fabric you linked to and tried to use it but the weave is way too tight to get a needle through and just tears it. It comes up on Amazon as linen, is the correct? Thanks

As a tip when you start your next project (where the 'right side' is to have the fluffy/looped effect) try working your thread from the other side of your hoop (i.e. so that the top of the 'drum skin' has the non loopy side and the other side, in rather than the other way around) If you are working to a drawn pattern you just need to remember to reverse it because you will be working from the 'wrong side' You will find it much easier, quicker and safer to work with as you gain experience.

Great beginner tips as i am a beginner at punch needle/needlepoint. And all my stitches when i punched down would slowly pulled out as i went. I was thinking i needed a different size needle punch tool because i was working with embroidery floss more then what you had in this video yarn. However i realized after i held the floss in the back as i punched the stitches are going well. It really is key to have a finger holding previous stitch in the back when punching down on new stitches.

Also another problem arose that you may not get with bigger yarn punch tools as with embroidery floss i am realizing because the stitches are so small and together i usually prick my holding finger when i punch. This suck as it kind of hurts so i am wondering if there is a thimble or some other tool i am forgetting to use to clear up this pain. However coming across your video definitely clears up having stitches hold now. Maybe you only focus on larger yarn based needle point and dont have this issue but if you try it on small mesh things with tiny thread/embroidery floss you can poke yourself alot on that sharp needle point end of the punch tool. Anyway great tips

Do you do one color at a time? How do you change color of thread? Thinking of trying this. I used to latch hook and diamond paint now. I wanted to try this back when I did latch hook but seemed more complex for hand coordination challenges. I tried hand looming and S loom too challenging too. Maybe this will be easier if I can get the threading down

Hi! I'm hoping to take up punch needling since I spin my own wool and have run out of people to knit/crochet scarves for :') I spin quite thick so tend to have quite chunky wool after plying, is the monkscloth still suitable for punch needling with thicker needles and wools, or are there types of fabric that are good for thicker wool and needles?
