Rapid Recovery from Health Anxiety: A Step-by-Step Guide to Stop Worrying and Reclaim Your Life
www.paigepradk...
Health Anxiety can take on many distressing forms including the persistent fear of having a life threatening illness or physical sensations that cause the false belief that something is terribly wrong with one’s heart, brain or other organs in the body.
All it takes is one misinterpretation from your brain or a trigger in your environment to create an all consuming focus on the false belief that something is very wrong with you. When the fear center of your brain (the amygdala) is triggered, anxiety symptoms begin. In attempts to soothe your anxiety, you may begin compulsive behaviors to seek reassurance from doctors, the Internet, or anyone that can convince you that you are fine. Here is the worst part -- You do not realize that your attempts to calm your anxiety are ACTUALLY reinforcing your anxiety, making it stronger and STRONGER with each attempt.
If you have experienced health anxiety, you know how helpless this cycle of fear and reassurance seeking can feel. Many of my clients referred to me by physicians and emergency rooms have health anxiety. In this video, I am going to explain in-depth what Health Anxiety is, and how it is unknowingly reinforced, so that you can start to recognize the patterns in your own life.

I am happy that it reminds you to not listen or react to your anxious mind. But, you want to make sure that you are not using the video as a reassurance compulsion, similar to asking someone for reassurance. A reminder to tolerate anxiety and not overreact to anxious thoughts or body sensations is a great use of the video. 😊❤️

@@PaigePradkoTherapy how am I suppose to know that I am only experiencing anxiety attack if the symptoms feels so real. When is the right time to seek a medical advice. I have been experiencing symptoms like stiff neck and the feel of tingling and numbness on right side of my body that feels like stroke. It that won't go away in months and I am so scared
@PaigePradkoTherapy

If clients are having real symptoms and do not have a prior history of health anxiety, I encourage them to have a full medical check up. And then, they do not return for another visit until their physician recommends the visit. I encourage clients to tell their doctors that they experience anxiety over health concerns and do not want unnecessary testing or visits because this can increase the anxiety. It sounds to me like you have health anxiety because you worry about a heart attack and stroke. If you have the signs of a stroke like being unable to smile or talk or one side of your body is limp making it difficult to walk, you should go to the ER. Otherwise, your job is to tolerate the anxiety of not being sure without searching for reassurance. This is the work and the way to lower your anxiety.

I've been dealing with health anxiety and panic disorder for many years, since I was a child. Thankfully I'm doing much better than I used to because of generally reducing my stress levels. My health anxiety was terrible last year after I ended up in hospital for real with something completely unexpected. But strangely, I found being in hospital actually helped improve my overall health anxiety because I realised that even though I was very sick, people took care of me and I was fine in the end. When I first came out of hospital I did have a LOT of saftey behaviors while recovering - but I let myself just do that because I'd be in hospital for nearly 3 weeks and was used to be checked several times a day. So for a few weeks after I got out, I did the same thing at home which did reassure me. I reduced that over time and now I only check myself when I'm actually feeling sick OR when my stress levels are really high. So, even though the worst possible thing that could have happened (in my health anxiety mind) really did happen to me.... it actually helped over all because now I worry less about small things and can let them go more easily in general. I Google symptoms FAR less than before and stop myself early on if I get into that pattern again. Having such an unexpected health issue just made me realise... I'm not a doctor. No matter what I Google I'll never know what is going on inside. I just have to take good care of myself and if I do get sick, do the normal things. I'm less afraid of getting sick.

Went through a similar event also health anxiety background and I too now after that hospital stay... Im able to let body sensation or body ache go few days and I will observe and only after persistent and increasing day by day I have it looked at ...another thing I started sticking to one doctor...several specialist and doc cause inconsistencies and diff opinions and unnecessary tests so having a trusted relationship with One doc is important..and if that doc says no that test isn’t necessary it’s reinforcing a false belief that something is wrong with you ..I then trust the doc and back off ...choosing a doctor is sooo important

One of the hardest things when dealing with health anxiety is that I kinda become “addicted” to these symptoms. It’s hard to explain but like when I’m having a sore throat, I constantly swallow just to make sure the pain is there. With health anxiety when I sometimes feel normal I subconsciously keep checking for any symptoms to be anxious about and thus the cycle goes on.

@@PaigePradkoTherapy I had a question. My first panic attack happened when I was flying to London. I had this sudden urge to smoke in the flight and I was about to light up. Then in the hotel room where smoking wasn`t allowed I felt like doing it. I am having these urges and make me go full blown panic attacks and tunnel vision. On the patio of 9th floor of the building of my friend I thought I`ll jump off and got panicked. What mental disorder do you think I suffer? I have never had such experiences in the past. I am 35 years of age
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy 4 жыл бұрын
I am sorry that you are experiencing these urges. You may be surprised to know that those kind of thoughts are very common. Many people experience them, and let them float by. But, others are very bothered by them and wonder if they will actually act on their thoughts. When we are bothered by these unwanted thoughts, they can become obsessive in nature. It is important to remember that everyone can have crazy thoughts. Our thoughts are not in control of us....we decide upon our intensional behaviors. I advise my clients to tolerate the uncertainty of their thoughts and to not assign validation or truth to any thought. Seeking out a therapist that specializes in OCD may be helpful for you if you need some added support.

I started experiencing health anxiety last year, after my teen cousin was diagnosed with a heart disease for which she had to get a transplant. I suffer with Health Anxiety - I believe it was triggered when my dad died of cancer 10 years ago. Over the past 2 years my anxiety has become really bad - and every single day is a daily battle. I am petrified of becoming ill myself and worry daily that there is something seriously wrong with me. It’s got to the point that I undress in the dark so I don’t see something on my body that might scare me into thinking I’m ill (like a rash or a lump). I can’t watch programmes that even mention cancer - I have to switch off. Yes, it does bring back bad memories of when my dad was ill, but the main reason is trying to avoid hearing people’s symptoms etc, otherwise I will worry that if I experience similar symptoms, that I’m also ill and will die. It’s really beginning to take over my life and I feel it getting worse every day 😢

I am so sorry that you are suffering, Jill. I am going to post more videos to help people with health anxiety. Follow my advice from part 2 of the Health Anxiety video. It sounds like you are avoiding everything that might remind you of your fears. These avoidance behaviors are actually reinforcing your anxiety and obsessive health fears. You must begin facing your fears head on. If you can find a therapist that is trained in ERP for OCD, I recommend therapy. A therapist that does not trained in ERP will not be as helpful. I am going to work on a video for health anxiety and how to do exposures. Next week I have a video coming out on how to write ERP scripts for OCD. Please watch that video and apply the script writing to your worst health anxiety fears. You can turn this around. I wish you the best.

I ended up in the hospital with chest pain thinking I was having a heart attack. I was there for 2 days and all checked out fine. A month later the same thing happened. Another 2 days in the hospital along with a neurologist and psychologist . Every thing came back good but the psychologist said I was depressed and needed meds. No meds for me but I have struggled with health anxiety since. Sometimes it's nonexistent other times it's huge. Lots of tests and trips to the doctor for every little thing. It is a struggle. Identifying it is so important. Many of us have these fears, and covid hasn’t helped. The main thing is to not reinforce the fears by researching, seeking reassurance or checking body sensations or symptoms or excessive doctor appointments. Allow the fear without analyzing it or changing your life because of it.

I think that when people have anxiety at a young age, they become afraid of their body’s natural fear response. By trying to avoid these symptoms, instead of accepting the symptoms as a normal body reaction, the anxiety disorder develops. Then they misinterpret their sensations as dangerous and add fearful thoughts and what if scenarios. The entire anxiety cycle can be undone, and anxiety symptoms can be interpreted as uncomfortable, but not dangerous. Wishing you the best in your recovery.

I am so sorry you lost your dad. Many people begin these symptoms after losing a loved one or having a personal health scare. When I treat clients that have this kind of trauma, I find that not only are they checking body symptoms, but, they are avoiding activities in their life because of their fear. I encourage them after they have been given the go ahead by their physician, to face their fears and begin engaging in activities they have avoided. They also stop checking symptoms and tolerate the body sensations and urges to seek reassurance. Wishing you the best.

I have alot of skipped beats and feeling my pulse pounding in my neck. Ive been checked out by the doctor several times over the years. I had a mitral valve prolaspe. I worry alot about my heart weakening or suddenly developing heart failure or a dangerous arrthymia, So I feel the need to go back to the doctor over and over for Ekgs and such. It gets quiet bad when the onset of stress or anxiety. And friends and family have little to no empathy for my situation, and constantly belittle my symptoms and make me out like I am a drama queen or something. Even some of my doctors have been hurtfully sarcastic while doing the testing, which is kind of hurtful to someone who really is worried. Not to mention, People like me is what keeps doctor offices in business, so you'd think they would appreciate the business. But anyway, Im just ranting at this point. Nice Video.

My brother passed away when I was 9 and I was too young to understand why my brother wasn’t sleeping in the bed with me anymore. But I did correlate hospital to him being gone. My father passed away when I was 15 from a stroke. He was sick ever since I was born so I was always in and out of the hospital with him heart and kidney issues. And I’ve been told by my mother and pretty much everyone that I can’t outrun my genetics. Eventually that is going to happen to me. I’ve gotten health anxiety ever since June 20th when I got food poisoning from a sausage which lead to mono and long term fear of fainting. I would constantly get dizzy and think I’ll fight. I didn’t exactly know it was anxiety until October so I started trying to get better and I felt better for a day than the following day on the 29th my father passed away. It was one of the worst pains ever. My anxiety got worse and I feared dying but it got much much worse when my grandfather passed only 27 days later November 24th, the day of my doctors appointment. Every since it’s been hard, I gotten dizzy a lot and only in December that I found out off balance and dizziness is caused by anxiety. I’m still off balance all day everyday but it’s only noticeable when I’m still. I have ringing and whooshing and ear and I’m fearful of it. I haven’t gotten dizzy in so long but I still fear I will pass out. Now I don’t think I will die as much but I do think I will get sick and faint from the sickness, I think everything will cause me to faint. Only because I KNOW it’s possible to faint from lots of things :( it’s unlikely for me to have cancer but it’s not unlikely for me to faint from fear. (I’ve never fainted before) I need to get over this fear because I’m only 17 and I want to LIVE NOT SURVIVE. I just want to know will these things cause me to faint now if they never caused me to faint before?🥺 please reply this would mean the world to me!!

First, I am so sorry for the loss of your father and your grandfather. Losses like this can be traumatic, especially when combined with the recovery you were already dealing with. Second, you cannot faint from anxiety or panic. I realize that it can make you feel light headed and dizzy, but, it is impossible to faint from anxiety. If you have a fearful reaction when you feel dizzy, you can change this by practicing interoceptive exposures. In the exposures, you make yourself dizzy on purpose and your brain learns to not associate fear with feeling dizzy. Here is a video to help you kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5u9mWZ7gMSohac

@PaigePradkoTherapy 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. This is the message you want to give to your brain. Dizziness is a symptom of anxiety, but, there is no chance of fainting and therefore your anxiety is a false alarm. You will lose the association of dizziness and fear with exposures and giving your brain messages like you are not the least bit anxious about fainting.

How many times can you go to see a Dr. and have test run for various symptoms before you start believing it is just anxiety? When do you stop running to the Dr. just because your symptoms change? Since Aug. 2019 I have had ct on the brain, MRI on the neck,CT on the Face and throat,3 EKGs because of panic attacks,2 stress tests,20+ regular Drs. visits. 8 E.R. visits. 1 visit to the ENT, an over the phone appointment with a gastroenterologist, a scheduled endoscopy, 9 internet emergency drs. visits all for differing and some similar symptoms. Every time it is the this is it. Then a rationalization that no it isn't this is just anxiety. Then the checking and thinking and saying but what if this is really it. Then the panic, then the ruminating, then the scheduling,then the endless calls to the Drs. Then the panic because of waiting. Then the tests.Then more panic because of waiting for the test results. Then some peace for a month or a few weeks, then a new symptom then it all starts again. I do speak to a counselor. Deep breaths, finding something to keep my mind busy, but the new symptom persists. For instance right now I am dealing with this feeling of having something stuck in my throat and this stuff nose feeling that bothers the roof of my mouth near my throat. CT was fine of throat and nose. ENT didn't see anything but says I can go forward with a nasal pharyngeal scope. E.R. doctor who did ct said everything was clear but to follow up with gastroenterologist, gastroenterologist said it sounds more throat related follow up with ENT but can do endoscopy for reassurance. All this while dealing with COVID being everywhere. I just can't find peace. Therapist says just breathe, lol. My throat says you're choking and my brain says it could be esophageal cancer get the endoscopy. Then my brain says but you have a partial right brachial branch block which causes a low pulse at rest, what happens when you get sedated. So yea Health Anxiety it's living but not living.

That sounds torturous. I treat people that are referred to me by the ER and cardiologists because of these repeat visits. I think it is very difficult for doctors to discourage patients from coming in for visits and doing tests. But, after a history like this, your doctors should refuse to see you. Going in for all of these appointments is only making the anxiety worse. Health Anxiety is like OCD. The thoughts and anxiety and even body symptoms are going to be there. Tolerate the anxiety and do nothing to reinforce it...every time the thoughts come up. Doing nothing means no doctor visits, no googling symptoms, no checking body symptoms like checking your pulse, no avoiding activities. Just give it one week of committing to this, and you will see results. It is impossible to ever get a guarantee about your health or anything else. Tolerate the uncertainty of your health. This is what will help you.

I cannot give you medical advice, but reread your history. This is health anxiety. All of those visits and tests made it worse. I would advice every physician that you have health anxiety and only want to see them when absolutely necessary and ask them to tell you what that frequency should be. Most physicians will say check in with me once a year.

What you are experiencing is a specific kind of OCD that relates to food, eating and a fear that your food may harm you. This is certainly challenging. It is always best to find an experienced OCD therapist to help you, because some therapists may identify this as an eating disorder instead of OCD. Your exposures will be centered around challenging that fear and tolerating eating different kinds of foods. I haven’t done a video on this kind of OCD, but, it is much more common than one would think. I wish you the best in your recovery.

I am so sorry, Justina. Health anxiety causes so much suffering. People with anxiety and health anxiety are very sensitive to sensations in their body. They add negative thoughts and interpretations about what those sensations mean. Then, they continue to check for symptoms and monitor their body and go to doctors and google symptoms. Although, I do recommend getting a clean bill of health, I also recommend working with an OCD and anxiety specialist that can help you learn to accept your body sensations and anxiety and not make those anxiety symptoms worse. An SSRI medication is sometimes prescribed to help and is recommended by those psychiatrists that work with OCD and anxiety. I am not a medical doctor and cannot comment on the medication. But, if I were working with a client with your symptoms, we would work on easing your reactions and changing your interpretations of what you feel in your body and move more towards accepting your anxiety in order to help it dissipate.

Sometimes people develop derealization or depersonalization symptoms following a severe panic attack. Your symptoms sound like that may be what is occurring and it can be very upsetting for people. This may or not be the case for you. But, if it is, these symptoms can come and go, but seem to resolve on their own over time. It is most helpful to do grounding exercises and not overreact emotionally when experiencing derealization and depersonalization symptoms. Here is a video to explain more. What about when you have serious medical issues-and a growing list of them i.e fibromylagia, neurological disorder similar to MS/with attacks (totally stop sleeping), GERD(new diagnosis), high BP etc. How can I get out of downward no sleep cycle that feeds my neurological illness that then feeds the sleep disorder?

Hi Selma. This is difficult stuff. We have to sort through the real health risks from the obsessive worries. I typically have my clients create a treatment plan with their doctors that include when they should seek treatment and when they should not. What activities they can do and what restrictions they have. Sometimes the worry and not the medical diagnoses themselves can take away a person’s peace of mind and joy in life. And if a person is feeling anxious about their health, this makes sleep more difficult, as we are designed to stay awake if we are feeling anxious.

This is a great example of an anxious thought related to a body symptom. Your google search went to a worst case scenario and increased your fear. Without googling your symptom, and realizing that everyone gets canker sores, what is another thought that you can tell yourself from the logical part of your brain instead of the fear center? Can you pick a period of time, say two weeks, that you can tolerate not knowing why you have these symptoms and not do any actions that seek out reassurance?
