That isn’t true for a starting graduate job in the UK. Every graduate scheme has a baseline salary to start with, the only variation is within location (you’re paid more in London than in Manchester for example). After gaining qualifications you can then apply for a more competitive rate taking into consideration your qualifications and contribution to the company. As someone who went to an oxbridge level university in the UK, a lot of the well-paid university graduates go into family businesses or get jobs through family connections. Not many are as well paid as you may think - many are also unemployed. Just because you have oxbridge title doesn’t guarantee anything.

Really? In Germany that salary would be very low. In my case i got nearly two times more...and I didn't have to pay that much money for uni (just 300€ per semester). So why should I go to these "top unis"? Makes no sense... You can even get a better salary with less effort in time and money...

@@f4game Sadly a lot of graduates don't get anything like that , some won't even earn enough to pay off their student loans , a university education is only good when you have a definite career goal , go to any coffee shop in the UK and you can be pretty sure some of the staff are graduates who can't get a job in their field of learning and sadly most never will .

@f4game

@Nicky L But here it will rise as well. At first you are classified by your level of degree (bachelor, master...). Lets say you start at level 12 and when you have 1-2 years work experience you are level 13. Then you will get more responsibility (level 14) and at some time you are out of any levels. Then you have to hammer out a deal by your own. But your right, it depends on your taking home money. Hows the tax situation for her in UK? In Germany she has to pay round about 40 percent taxes (as a single and health insurance and pension included)

I'm in the process of studying to be an actuary as a career change. I think the thing that most attracted me to the actuarial profession is that it seems to be very meritocratic. For the most part, it really just seems about whether you can prove your ability to do the job by passing the exams. When I went to a career fair for my University, they told me the valedictorian tried to apply and they couldn't even take his resume because he hadn't passed any of the exams yet. Pass the tests, get the job. Pass more tests, get a raise. Once you're an actuarial fellow, you basically have guaranteed employment in your field as long as you want. It seems like a great deal for anyone that's smart, but is stuck getting jerked around at the bottom.

Good luck! Sounds like there are a lot of similarities between this grad scheme and accounting grad schemes, although obviously two very different careers! This may end up being one of the best decisions you’ve made 🤩

Edit: thanks for the info guys, that's enough things to ponder :') whaaat, since when is it normal to pay rent to your parents for allowing you to live with them just like you did all these years? is this common in the UK or in other countries? here in Greeece, especially since the crisis, it's quite common for people to live with their parents until their mid20s/30s (perhaps only contributing minor costs to the household since unemployment is quite prominent in young people). I don't think anyone's parents would accept money for "rent" here. Just curious about the housing situation elsewhere xx
@bubbacalling
@bubbacalling 4 жыл бұрын
Maria Start it’s not normal to live with your parents into your 20s and 30s in the UK. If you do, it’s up to the parents whether you pay rent or not. Personally I don’t really agree with it unless the parents really need the money, but that’s my opinion.

@@bubbacalling yes, i think that living alone and becoming independent should come as early as possible. however it strikes me as a bit cold to ask for money from your family (ie your child!)because they are sharing your roof just like they've always had. no judgment though since everyone's circumstances are different!

So true though like I am Asian and it's very normal for kids to stay with their parents , they never leave , if you got a job and need to move to New place your parents and siblings move out with you , like who would take care of parents in old age if you leave them behind ,I know in other parts of world living alone is part of adulting but at least in Asia living with your family is part of culture , it's your responsibility as a child to always stay near them cuz they might need you help

I saw that Holly Gabrielle does the same thing. In my country (Brazil) it's not common at all, a lot of people live with their parents until they get married. This helps them saving money when they get to live on their own, housing is really expensive. But of course, if you have a job your parents won't pay for personal things anymore, such as clothes, restaurants, new phones etc.

There is actually quite a bit that goes into pricing, and it’s fun to figure out which rating variables are driving up losses for the insurance company and how to go about fixing these issues. I hope you got comfortable with coding from your uni project since actuaries do a lot of coding (Excel VBA, R, Python, SQL)! 😂

@@animay8713 Yeah I know right, at the end of the day these companies will slave a new graduate away with exams atc and still make them until 6pm and get 25 days annual leave. My teacher grad salary is higher than hers, same location, 13 weeks school holidays and my days finish at 3.45-4.30pm. As a teacher, I now know how the system works in work and all schools are doing is training students up into the 9-5 grind. My teaching approach is different, I want students to broaden their horizons and explore more. Also for a Cambridge Grad, working in insurance is just yikes. I think she's far better then that tbh, and honestly as a teacher I feel she bad the wrong choice.

@@farahaslam9224 Oh damn. I thought teachers didn't make that much. Or maybe paige doesn't make that much. For a "really competitive position" and for a Cambridge graduate, she really isn't getting paid much, is she? Maybe there'll be good opportunities for promotions and such when she gets her proper actuary training and passes her exams.

So basically whay you studied in Cambridge has nothing to do with your choice of carreer ? Sorry im a bit lost. Our system is different. I had high scores so i had my first choice which is pharmacy school and now i am a pharmacist. Does it work differently in the UK ?

As a medical student, I’m always confused that people will study something and get a degree, and then end up working something different. I’d be kinda disappointed with myself if with all my hard work at uni, I end up with something different and have to study again and I’ve waisted all those years. I can really see that you’re super happy and excited for this job, but why didn’t you go for a degree that would be related to your current job.

One of the great things about a Physics degree is that it prepares you to solve problems. All kinds of problems. You can read about physics theory in any book and claim you know it all but consistent application of theorems to different problems and the of solving exercises will wire your brain in a different way. Being able to solve real world problems in an efficient and clear manner is one of the greatest assets of a higher education in Physics.

TheRenaissanceman65 well I was raised to get a degree in a well paying job (medicine obviously for me) and you can have whatever hobby you want. My hobby is in makeup. Even tho I love it, I wouldn’t make a living out of it, it’s not a stable job. If I want to learn about something that interest me, there are plenty of courses and books online, and you don’t need to go £££ in debt

Some people realise a job related to their degree is not for them but continue with their bachelors because for most careers they just want you to have a bachelors it doesn’t matter what in. So it’s not a waste because for something like an actuarial career even those who study actuarial science still have to complete more exams post graduation x

Hi Paige, I thought you gave a pretty good explanation to a lot of the actuarial questions that were asked, but here are a few points that I felt needs some greater clarification regarding the profession (they're not listed in any particular order): 1. Perhaps this is just a UK thing, but, in the US and in Canada, insurance consulting actuaries refers exclusively to actuaries who work in consulting companies (e.g. PWC, KPMG, WTW/Aon, MMC). The definition you gave implies that an actuary who works at an insurer/reinsurer would also be regarded as an insurance consulting actuary. Now, I realize this difference could seem minor, but in my experience, there are some very big differences in the type of actuarial work that a training/qualified actuary would be exposed to. For example, most consulting actuaries would have their work limited to just valuation/reserving projects and this is because pricing projects generally set the vision for an insurer and it's highly unlikely that an insurer would entrust that vision to a third party (i.e. consultants). And this difference is applicable to both life and P&C consulting actuaries. 2. I felt that your explanations were very biased towards the P&C side of things, but this bias is understandable because you've only worked on the P&C side. As a result of this bias, I don't think you were able to properly explain the difference between a life actuary and a P&C actuary. In my opinion, a P&C actuary is mainly concerned with how much money is paid towards a coverage for a group of policyholders. However, a life actuary is mainly concerned with when would the benefit payments would occur for a group of policyholders. As a result of this fundamental difference, the actuarial models/methods that are used to price the policies are completely different. 3. This could just be a UK/Europe thing again, but, in my experience, most of the people who want to become actuaries would start writing their exams while in university and there are primarily 2 reasons as to why people would do that. The first reason (and perhaps the most important reason) is that in order to land an actuarial internship in the US and in Canada, most candidates need to demonstrate that they have an interest in the profession and the easiest way to do that is to pass 1-2 actuarial exams before applying for their first internship. By passing these exams, it illustrates that you're committed to the profession as you're willing to spend at least $200 USD to take one of the exams and devote enough study time to pass the exam(s). The second reason is that because the journey to becoming a fully qualified actuary is so time consuming, people just want to get the exams over with so that they can get on with their lives.
