_"What does it mean to be part of this division in the company?"_ Welcome the crass crap of corporate life. That Q comes from the same swamp as those ludicrous interview Q's. "And what's your weakest point?" What the blank are you supposed to say? "I probably spend too much time running my narcotics business during work hours." The prudent answer to your Q is to give some groveling response about how you've enjoyed mathematics ever since A-levels. So this group offers me an opportunity to extend my knowledge of math in new directions. You can then sit back and hear your grateful colleagues replay your brilliant response while fumbling to add some unique adornment. Do they still ask, "where do you see yourself in 3 yrs, 5 yrs?" Another insane bear trap. "Well, I hope I will have advanced to a more accomplished level than you have." You can illuminate the futile nature of the Q with a gently insightful reply. "If you had asked me around say, Easter 2007, any prediction would have be unsafe, being unaware that in just two months time, Steve Jobs would release the iPhone and entirely change the world as we know it." PY - Don't read this: Let's face it, actuarial work is for dull people with no personality and not a creative nucleotide in their DNA. That ain't you by a light year. Stick with it to get the qualification if you want it, but keep your CV red-hot up to date. Good luck. You're a gem.

In appraisals I'm often told that while my contributions to meetings are usually insightful, I wait too long to be sure before making them and I shouldn't worry about making mistakes. Often a nonsense idea can trigger off ideas in the more experienced of your peers. One trick is to make a comment really quickly when it's obvious you've not had time to think; dive in with a jokey remark so that (a) you break the "who's first" ice and (b) you're off the hook for the first real comment. Yeah, I've been doing this too long. Walked past the Senate House this morning. They're mowing the lawn in the sun but I guess there aren't going to be any congregations this year either. I hope you and the others do come back for your replacement ceremony. Cambridge feels so odd without undergraduates cycling past me reminding me of my distant youth...
