Until I started watching a bunch of British vloggers, I didn't realize how intense the exam culture was over there. It's literally all you guys talk about, lol. GCSE's, A Levels, university exams, exam season, exam results....exams exams exams! We have final exams at the end of each semester in university, not at the end of an entire year, so I guess it just wasn't as huge of a thing, thankfully!

Oh you should see the Indian system 😂😂😂
@juliar24622 жыл бұрын
you think british exam culture is intense, try middle/eastern europe lol. We HAVE to take 3 basic level A-levels and at leats one extended A-level. Of course most people take 2. But that's 5 exams to write. We have all the subjects in class anyway, so 7-9 hours a day of just lessons. At univeristy too, all those subjects not related to your course at all, at least 10-12 modules per year. Pretty much the reason I don't study there at uni, it's just... I mean... hard, but pointless work. Uk is pretty chill to be fair

This type of stress seems to be rather absent from regular studytuber content. It's important (and refreshing) to see this side too and realize that I am not the only one who is/were struggling with their studies and doubting themselves.

I did physics and astro at uni. Totally resonate with all of the stresses related to labs, problem sheets, not understanding physics tutorials, exams, constantly feeling out of your depth, comparing yourself to others

I've been binge watching your Cambridge vlogs recently, and I just want to applaude you for being so honest and real on your journey. You didn't have to show us your lows, but you did and that is powerful. Looking back at stressful times that we manage to overcome should remind us to continue doing our best and remember how great and weird it feels to finish or overcome something. I just submitted a long term in-depth exam today that I've been stressing over the last month, but I managed to start early and felt relaxed and proud of myself when I submitted it because I was so hopeless during March. Hopefully it'll go well though!

This was such a good idea for a video- it really puts things into perspective for people currently in that position. I’m a finalist at Oxford and my exams start on Monday (!) so I definitely needed reminding that there’s no point trying to judge how you did in an exam because you just never know! Sometimes you forget how far you’ve come and everything you’ve accomplished, so it must be really nice to look back at these things in a way xx

Paige, it is quite normal to be stressed at university with the heavy course load, all the assignments, and exams which one has to do and it can be quite difficult. I found university stressing with all the assignments which I had to do especially essays which I found difficult. I was worried not finishing my assignments on time with all the sources which I had to look for and how to write and structure my essays.

I am from Austria and I have studied for my Bachelor's and Master's degree in Austria, Denmark and Norway and at least in my field/at the unis I was studying at there was this ranking system in place. I honestly think that that contributed to your stress an awful lot, because you constantly have to compete with all the other students in your class in order to get a good grade (that might also be why you didn't feel like asking your friends for help that much, because you knew that even though they are your friends, they are also your direct “rivals“ in achieving your goal). Where I have studied, you were graded merely on your own merit and how well you've done in your exam, but there was no comparing to other students whatsoever. So if it was an easy exam, lots of people got an A, but if it was a particularly difficult class, maybe 70% of students failed. There was never only a certain percentage of people who could get an A or whatever grade. I really think that would have made all the difference for me - we just studied together, helped each other out and celebrated together when we all got good grades. It really sounds extremely competitive if helping out your classmate potentially means not getting as a good grade yourself. This really sounds like it facilitates unnecessary stress and the feeling that you have to constantly beat others. I was only my own worst enemy, but never someone else. If I put in the hours and the work then nothing is stopping me from getting an A, no matter how anyone else does. Sorry for the rant 😅 I just feel that it would also be somewhat unfair because the students in your year might do particularly well in exams and you do your best abd “only“ get an 2.1, when in the next year, when the competition is not as tough, you mighg be able to fairly easily get a 1st with the same amount on work put in... Anyway, love your videos, just wanted toto add some rambly perspective :)

I was at Sidney Sussex from 2002 to 2006. I had an absolute blast. I think the tide started to turn around the time I left. They brought in league tables for the colleges and there was more emphasis on results. They have clamped down on the drinking societies too apparently. Smartphones and social media also made people a lot more self-conscious. I am not sure I would enjoy it now as the whole place is a lot more political, work-heavy and less relaxed. I know for a fact that my course was more intense than that of any other UK university bar Oxford, but I think we had a better balance. All the best in your future endeavours.

I don’t think there’s a set amount of people who have to fail, but there’s a set of amount of people who must get a 3rd (or a fail) and a set amount of people who must get a 2.2, and these results are often not looked on favourably by employers
