Pain and temperature spinothalamic tract

This video presents the pathway of pain and temperature through 3 order neurons:
1. first order neuron extends from receptors until the dorsal horn cells 2 segments above the entery point e.g if the stimulation occurs to thoracic nerve 10, the nerve fibers ascend to thoracic 8 and second order neuron starts from thoracic 8.
2. Second order neuron crosses in spinal cord and ascends in lateral column of spinal cord, then through brainstem as spinothalamic tract which ends in PVL nucleus of thalamus.
3. 3rd order neuron starts from thalamus and ends in the upper part of postcentral gyrus and paracentral lobule (area 3,2,1).
- Injury of spinothalamic tract in spinal cord causes contralateral loss of pain and temperature 2 segments below the level of spinal cord injury.
