The thing that makes Viren more interesting than the standard stock villain is that he truly *wants* to be the hero, he just doesn't have the moral fiber for it. There are moments where he can screw up enough courage to qualify, but it's ultimately not who he really is. And Elijah's comparison is quite apt... Like a stereotypical "good guy", the moment the reality deviates from the script he imagines, his true nature comes out. I have no doubt that he did go back to help the queens because that's what the *hero* would do, and he was stinging from the rebuke from the king about leaving the wounded... his heroic plan to save the two kingdoms was sullied. I also have no doubt that he did go to the king with the intention of switching places with him on the night of the assassination after a similar rebuke, but when he was met with a scornful speech instead of the eternal gratitude, his noble intentions evaporated. He expects the hero's reward... a statue, everlasting reverence to his memory, or it's not really worth it. But at heart, he's not the hero... he's an amoral pragmatist. So even when his intentions are good, there is never a line too far with him.

What keeps him from being a base monster is his desire to be a hero, a patriot, and a good friend and advisor to the king... these things keep him behaving like a good man. @iainwhite86172 ай бұрын
It's not that he lacks morality, he rejects it, Think about what happened here. The logical. practical thing to do would have been to leave the queens behind. But Viren listened to his heart, not his head. He did the moral thing, and in the end, the two queens still died as well as his best friends wife. He probably blamed himself, and felt that Harrow blamed him as well. At the same time, his faith in dark magic paid off. He was able to use his magic to save 100, 000 people from starvation. I know we all love sassy Aanya, but without Virens plan and Virens magic, she nor Ezran would probably still be alive since I doubt Harrow would remain in power for long if he let 50, 000 of his own people die. And it seems as if he got no credit for it. This taught him several lessons. Listen to your head, not your heart, be practical, not moral. No matter the problem, dark magic will always provide a solution. No matter what good he does, people will always look down on him. Given all that, it's not hard to see how he would eventually become so cold and bitter and resentful. And the thing is, Harrow could have prevented that slide in to darkness by just admitting his own foolishness, by telling Viren, in no uncertain terms that the whole thing was his fault. That if he didn't make a promise he couldn't back up, Viren wouldn't have had to resort to Dark Magic, and his wife would still be alive. But Harrow, as far as I know never once owned up to his own stupidity. Because he's the king and Viren is a servant.

Viren was the only one trying anything to keep as many people alive as it was safe to do. If they had left the wounded and just sent a team of soldiers to get them later, there is a good chance that many of the wounded and a great chance that all the unwounded would have made it back. He even went beyond what was safe when risking his own life to safe the queens when thunder turned up.

@Casterspellproductions2 ай бұрын
So, since I talked about the decisions made in the last episode I feel like I have to do the same in this episode. Here, I think making the idealistic choices was better than making the pragmatic ones. Viren was once again thinking pragmatically when he said to leave the wounded. Carrying them would've slowed them down and left them vulnerable to an attack from Thunder. But if they had, it would've bred resentment in the people. Leaving them to think that the leaders prioritised their own lives over the lives of their soldiers which would have all sorts of nasty consequences in the future. Same applies to the queens being the ones to turn back and distract Thunder, the pragmatic thing to do would be to send the soldiers back to distract him, but we run into the same issue because they are more skilled than the common soldiers and can distract him for longer. The mistake that they made here, as Harrow points out was to keep pushing. They got what they needed, the price was the lives of the queens, that should've been it. They're even, it's over, no more. But there was more, they refused to let it go. Because the overarching theme of the show is that wars start when people choose not to get along P.S. And in these 2 episodes Aanya proves why she will be a better ruler than any of them. She counters Harrow's impulsivity by refusing to make a decision until she has more information. And unlike Harrow she chooses not to provide aid she can't give despite the debt they owe, choosing her kingdom over personal honour. Which is also contrary to her mothers' decision to stay behind, even though I've just praised that decision it showed a sense of personal honour which would've likely led to them agreeing to the alliance to repay their debt. Aanya also shows something of a sense of idealism in giving Viren a chance to change her mind, the pragmatic thing to do would be to just say no and not let him influence her, but she heard him out and weighed her decision based on his words. Aanya understands that while her first thought should be pragmatic, sometimes idealism does hold the answer. And that is one definition of a leader Sorry for the thesis I just love this show so much

Here's the thing about Viren. Yeah, his actions are shady. But they come from a genuine will to do good. And they work. In this episode, he ends up saving hundreds of thousands of lives. At the cost of a few named characters. Yeah, he kills a Golem to feed his people. What do you think happens daily in farms? And for most of his story, that's Viren. The guy taking things to the extreme, but out of duty. Misguided perhaps. But it's source comes from a deepply rooted sense of duty.

While Viren is not a good person (obviously), we also should note that he's saving Harrow's ass here. First, Harrow decided to sacrifice 50,000 of his own people (what a terrific king 😭), then moped by the window when food was being rationed, while Viren was researching possible ways to save all those people - which he did eventually find. Yes, Viren's actions led to the death of Annika, Neha and Sarai, but 100,000 people were saved. Perhaps they could have done things differently, but back then, he was the only character using his brain cells, and it's sad that so many people miss that when watching

Funny thing is, Viren is right about most things. Killing one seemingly mindless creature to save 100000 is the correct choice. Leaving the wounded, while also an "evil" choice, it's one that makes sense when you know the freakin' DRAGON KING is on his way. Viren is an "evil" character, especially in the current day, but his goals at that point were noble. Re watching the series a handful of times adds to that narrative that, while evil, he's not mindlessly so
@bugcatcherjacky13342 ай бұрын

@bugcatcherjacky13342 ай бұрын
Also, killing the titan isn't the "correct" choice. You still kill and sacrifice a life. There's no right or wrong in scenarios like these. It's what you do for survival, that doesn't make it morally right, but for Katolis and Duren it was the most logical solution
@thunderguyer2 ай бұрын
@@bugcatcherjacky1334 Right, it's not "morally right", but as a king, you are forced to make that choice, sometimes. If what stood between your kingdom living comfortably and suffering through a famine was one life, the correct choice, as a king, would be to take that one life. Just like it's "correct" to leave the wounded behind, if their loss is less than the loss you'd suffer if you try to help them. That dilemma is something i appreciated more during my rewatches

I am not saying that Viren’s current actions are forgivable. Dark magic, torturing Runaan, sending Soren to dispose of Ezran. And now trying to whip up a continent into going to war. But the thing is he truly believes he is doing the right thing. That he is justified. In his mind, Elves banished humans for trying to be equal to them in learning magic, magic keeps Xadia prosperous so they should have some to save two kingdoms, the dragon killed his queen, and elves killed his king. War is the only path he sees because he feels slighted and thinks he’s on the path of justice, when really, he is on the path of greed and vengeance. He lacks the virtue “right ambition,” and instead falls into the matching Vice of Deficiency and Vice of Excess: want of ambition and over-ambition.

I genuienly believe Viren was willing to die for Harrow but because of Harrow's words he snapped and was set on this villianous arc. He genuinely wants to protect the people and he is terrified of Xadia- that is what I love about him as a character. Based on this reaction, I am not holding out hope for Elijah's reaction to everything that's going to happen with Viren in the rest of the show, and giving it the thought and respect she ought to.

Ha ha ha. I predict a future outcome........ Spoilers Below Mosco will be in tears for "that scene".... Elijah will pop champagne 🥂.

This episode is so good. The contrast they show between Harrow and Viren is wonderful. I think you nailed it on 'nice guys' and showing their true face when they don't get what they want. I think it comes down to selfishness. Viren thinks he knows best which just happens to be something that gains HIM something, and lashes out when others don't immediately bow to his ideas; Harrow comes from a place of compassion - not doing the smart, or practical, or right thing, but always trying to do what is best for others, not himself.

What happen in the flashback is the true Viren this time try to manipulate with the true. Viren's ones few moments of selfiness sacrifice was when he try to save the queens and another queen try the same for him.

Oh, I can't wait until Elijah gets caught up! I wish more people knew about this show, both so these reactions could get more views and so we could hopefully get the seasons 8, 9, and 10 they said they have plans for.

Ok, the elves ARE massing on the boarder. Xadia DID exile ALL of humanity for the actions of a few. Viren DOES have good reason to believe that all of humanity is facing potential extinction. You keep calling him a selfish ass hole but that just goes to show how much you don't understand him. He's not a good guy. He does terrible things. But he IS doing them because he believes they are necessary for the survival of his people. That's what makes him such an interesting character. He's not just trying to grab power for his own vanity. When he told Amaya that she should take the throne, he was serious, because he knew she would make the hard decisions to keep humanity safe. Harrow deciding to share food with Duren was noble, but also incredibly irresponsible as a leader. He chose to sacrifice 50,000 of his own men, women, and children to save as many of another kingdom. He is responsible for keeping those people safe. They didn't volunteer to starve, he just made the decision for them. Would it have been nice if they had attempted to seek help from Xadia? Of course it would have been, but no one believed that was possible, and they had good reason. Viren's solution wasn't perfect, but at least he tried something. Would you not hunt a deer to save your starving children? Or would you kill one of your own to save one of your neighbor's?
