When I see drumming like this, I think it explains why drummers die more than any other musician and turn into green goo. I don't know how you can follow the base, the keyboard, and keep your own rhythm. You truly prove that good drumming is about creativity and finesse than it is about speed or loudness.

@samueljacobson4704 жыл бұрын
It definitely has something like 15/16 in there somewhere
@S3lvah4 жыл бұрын
In the intro, the synth pattern seems to be based on a count of 14, straying from and returning back to the count. The song is in triplet feel so each count is divided by 3. I heard the following (1 = 1 count, | = pattern dividers): *14 | 10 + 11/3 | 1/3 + 16 | 8 + 11/3 | 1/3 + verse...* (Mathed together: 14 | 13+2/3 | 16+1/3 | 11+2/3 | 1/3 + verse...) As you can see, the 2nd and 4th synth patterns end with a fast triplet 11-thingy ("Dun dun du-dun dun dun" or 2+2+1+2+2+2 = 11). The 3rd pattern and the verse have a slow start where the first synth note is 1/3 longer (4/3 instead of 3/3 = 1), which compensates for the previous patterns cutting 1/3 short. So without the kooky 1/3 false starts, it would be 14 | 14 | 16 | 12. 16 + 12 = 14 + 14, and more importantly you can hear Leo kinda ignoring the different pattern division there anyway. My musical vocabulary isn't very good so if you didn't understand, any tips on how to explain it more clearly are appreciated. Just an amateur home drummer with a piano background.
@djangoallgains4 жыл бұрын
Intro, verse and first chorus are in 7 with a triplet feel in the kick. Synth is in 4 for three measures, then follows hi hat to finish the grouping. The reason it sounds weird is because the synth adjusts you to 4/4, and then once the phrase finishes, it sounds like the downbeat is 1/16th early

@Proghead884 жыл бұрын
Which part is giving you the most trouble? It's in slow 7/8 with a subdivision of triplets. So make sure can feel all 7 triplets in a row clearly through all the cymbal accents. The "hiccups" that happens every 2 bars or so are just strong accents on the last part of the triplet on either the 4th or 7th beat of the bar. When it happens at the end of the bar (end of the 7th triplet) it is followed by an empty downbeat on one. That rest on 1 right after the upbeat of 7 might be throwing you off.

Leo, to not get lost in the rhythm, is it better first play the drum/snare pattern (sextuplet subdivision) and then add the 8th cymbal line "over" or think in all parts together (I figure out a 7/8 time signature)?
@LeoMargarit14 жыл бұрын
For me switching to a 7/8 there would be super strange as it would imply a new tempo that has nothing to do with the previous one... So I guess it’s “just” a matter of getting used to the subdivision, practice groups with a metronomes, alternate 4 16th with quintuplet and then septuplets until it becomes natural... But be aware that it could take years... :D

Try counting in groups of 7 non-stop along to the same speed of that synth in the intro (or just follow the hi-hat). Once you find the steady beat don't change the speed no matter what the accents are doing around it. You will notice everything revolves around 7 perfectly steady beats no matter what. That rest on 1 right after the upbeat of 7th triplet might be throwing you off.
