A car ran over my boot, many years ago, and squashed my toecap. My foot was flooded with a weird sensation, as if it was perhaps bleeding profusely, or perhaps sweating, or perhaps very painful. Pain and perception and consciousness are all so very fascinating. This video was literally amazing. A few things I had heard before and a few were new to me. There is just one view or phrasing I think js a bit off: Saying "it's all in your head" and equaling it to "it's not real". The things in my head are the only things, I can know actually exist. Our perception of the world is, as you described, only a flawed understanding, but it is the only reality there is. Pain can only be real, when it is in my brain. Hmmh. Okay, by that exact logic I can say, a pain that is in your brain, but not in my brain, is not real to me. And I think, that makes A LOT of sense. People are dismissve about mental disorders like depression, saying "It's only in your brain, it isn't real.", because THEY don't feel it. If they can not understand it, they can not empathize with it and they don't feel the pain in their own head, so it is not part of their reality. Okay, it's nearly half past three in the night (morning?) right now and I lack some sleep, but this feels like quite the epiphany right now! I hope, I will get back to this thought later.

Loneliness, depression, even anxiety at times are absolutely a form of pain. I’ve always described depression as feeling like your heart is bruised or your insides are bruised (not saying you’re depressed, but I think loneliness can feel a lot like that too). I’m glad you’ve been trying to socialize more. Keep at it-it’s really hard some days, because you have to work through the pain to solve the pain. My wife's grandma always says that she felt no pain in none of the 6 times she gave birth. She said that the doctor had this miraculous "no pain" method. I asked kind of joking if it was a form we had to fill. From what I can tell, the method was simply the doctor saying it would not hurt at all, there didn't seem to be anything special. Maybe she just believed him and expected no pain..

Hey, Lloyd, I love your videos and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to watch an awful lot of them over the years. I very much appreciate your deep reasoning and impromptu presentation style. On the question of whether or not it is good to reduce the amount of pain we perceive: It's pretty complex and I'm pretty much ranting, but it seems pretty evident to me that it depends on the situation. Pain is a fantastic source of information and even better motivator and teacher, so in most cases I would advise to fully embrace the suffering you're going through, because it is bound to become a learning experience, or at least a spur for (hopefully appropriate) action. But there are of course cases where pain serves no apparent function - phantom pains that you mentioned are examples of that, migraines, pain that is experienced by people suffering from some affliction on their deathbed, and more. So in case of most pains - I say let them be, because they force you to do something about your existence, which at the moment evidently isn't going terribly well. But it still is necessary to aim for absolute elimination of pain, so that we have tools to ease the suffering when the situation is determined to be hopeless. In general I think that taboo we have in the western culture around suffering and pain, somewhat paradoxically contributes to increase in suffering - especially that of the mental/spiritual flavor. Instinctive methods of dealing with your pain in context of a community, work great for "physical" pain (probably because the damage is usually visible), but fail miserably in case of "emotional" pain, where if you suddenly freak out in the middle of a street for whatever reason, you can't reasonably expect the closest stranger not to be suspicious or put some distance between you and them in terror. I just really believe that including a very carefully curated programme for psychology in public (and private) education systems would make life of way better quality for basically everyone.

It's up to the other guy now. Propably, despite him getting tired and irritated at Lloyd's slowness (that one actually really needs to make any story properly, in particular when making a historical story) at some point, he must now be experiencing a similar situation. He seems like a workaholic artist, like he has new projects all the time, and at the same time trying to draw Hannibal, so... Well, I kind of like it, the karma I mean, him being earlier so critical of Lloyd's unexisting "work schedual", and now having at least a very similar situation... They were too optimistic about the time issue to begin with, I agree they should had known better and warn people it might take some time etc. I think they'll learn though. Not to make story of that sort ever again, I mean.

My personal mentality that kinda helps me when I feel pain is remembering that it's a friend - basically my brain tells me "Hey, dude, something is wrong there" so I'm checking of whether I injured myself or something and if not then it's just a signal I'm bored and not focusing on anything else than being slightly tired, just do my thing, I'll rest later. If it won't vanish in 3 days then I might consider visiting a doctor but it came to that just once, turned out replacing fish on the diet I tried to lose a few pounds just had me a bit low on magnesium, otherwise had no issues for last 13 years.

This might be of some interest to someone interested in experiences of pain and medication: Years ago, I was being operated on. It was a fairly minor surgery, and I was wide awake the whole time (they had given me the option for general anesthesia, but that would've required me to stay the night). The surgery was painful in a weird way I cannot describe (they pulled on my intestine, among other things). I had been given something like an epidural prior to the operation, but either it was wearing out, or the pain just was too strong, so I did as I had been instructed, and asked for additional pain relief. So, they gave me an opiate directly into the vein. I had assumed that stuff would take the pain away, but instead, a feeling just sort of rushed into my head that I can't describe very well. It was like a wave of pressure that immediately dimmed all sensations. I couldn't even hear normally, and everything sort of felt more distant. But I still felt the pain. I just didn't care about the pain anymore, because the sensation in my head/mind caused by this drug was worse. I don't know if that feeling itself qualifies as pain, but it certainly was not a pleasant experience. I never want to be injected with opiates again. I did take some pills for a while after the surgery that were also opiates (I didn't realize that until after several days), and they made me constipated. Once I was told the drugs cause that, I quit using them, relying on ibuprofen which turned out to be enough. So, even more reason to never use opiates again.

Personal anecdote about babies not perceiving pain. My earliest clear memory is of me sitting in my parent's bathroom floor, playing in the trash bin next to the toilet. I was covered in blood. I had found a disposable razor and apparently thought the shave gel smelled/tasted nice amd chewed on it like a sucker. What made it so memorable wasn't the blood, but being so upset at my mother's reaction after walking in. I dont recall it hurting at all. Another is when I was 5, I got whecked by the corner of a wooden swing and needed stitches. The only pain I recollect was from getting a local anesthetic shot before the doctor sewed me up. Seven stitches in all. Pain is entirely subjective to ones' experience, I suppose.

When at the dentist, i need 2 to 3 ampules of sedation before they can really go at it, while with others usually 1, maybe 2 maximum, are enough. I always found these things strange but just accepted it. Now it makes more sense to take a longer and harder look at this redhead phenomenon. Thanks Lindy! I hope your pain is manageable. You're not alone! I’ve really enjoyed this video, very informative so thanks, Is that a sonic screwdriver behind you between two pictures? Also could you do a video on the items on your wall, I see two artistic drawings of birds on your right above the Dalek that’s interesting.

Long term pain management techniques became something I've had to learn after fun and games in the USMC. Learning and understanding the body's signals that something is WRONG and needs attention - essentially walking around on a broken leg since '92 - and understanding that while you've developed 'acceptable' levels of pain that you can function with, if you DON'T get it taken care of then there will be more serious complications and pain later. I've been scolded many times by my doctors for putting off or ignoring things that caused far worse problems than the simple fixes or palliatives that could have been applied. Every vet I know has been asked "On a scale of 1 to 10, how is your pain today?" by well-meaning nurses and doctors, some of whom should know better, and for a great many of us our initial thought is usually some dark gallows humor followed by fantasies of a right smack. We know they are trying to judge a subjective measurement but it doesn't help.

My mother used placebo to great effect when I was a child. Spreading a bit of butter on a bruise, placing wild arugula on a scrape, massaging the corresponding toe to deal with toothache. I figured out that it's probably not having any real healing effect when I got slightly older, but since it obviously still had an effect and got rid of the pain in my mind, I've kept using placebo medicine since. The worse the pain is, the more incentive I have to believe that just rubbing a certain spot on my body will get rid of it.

Flying through the air and thinking "This is going to hurt". When I was 16 I wrecked my motorcycle. That was the only thing I remember from when I flew through an intersection before hitting the ground . That, and a missed diagnosis at the hospital later, is the source of most of my dairy pain decades later.

thanks again for some interesting thoughts one would not come by. here's few thoughts back: about the elder people from further away, we have similiar situation in Finland. We even have an idiom "to come to hospital carrying his head in her arms" and the next point you didn't mention is youngs with mental issues who cut themselves, partly to get attention, partly to gain relieving hormones

Not long ago, I wouldnt believe pain is an illusion, but its true for the most part. Woke up with crippling lower back pain for the first time in my life few weeks ago as a 30 year old man, spent entire day in bed, cause every movement hurt and it scared the shit out of me. Getting up and trying to move or stand straight was hell for like half an hour every morning for two weeks. Only when I started to ignore the pain and told myself its just pulled muscles and it will fix itself eventually whether I focus on it or not it got so much easier and now even if I wake up sore and my back hurts I just get up ignoring it. I definitely did pull the muscles and the pain was real the first day, but it was so much more managable when I just accepted this is my routine now and I have to get stuff done regardless. And it got better very fast after that.

The reason why no one can remember their birth is a reorganisation of the brain at the age of about 3. Almost all memories which aren't in regular use get deleted. The exception are people from the AuDHD spectrum. They don't get deleted properly and often keep some very early memories. So it's a pretty steep assumption to disallow conciousness to babies.

I remember being born. I remembered it so vividly as a small child, I would sit and wonder if it was a dream. Visually it looked like being pressed between two brains, but instead of pure darkness, everything was lit by the pink/red light that comes through skin. And it felt like falling backwards, headfirst, down a steep slide. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I realized "oh, that was a vagina, before I knew what vaginas looked like. Huh." I also remember my first dream and my first nightmare. And multiple times when my diaper was changed as an infant, including the exact words spoken some of those times. No surprise, ADHD and Aspergers here. Hmm.

53:20 I sometimes have migraines with a weird proprioception distortion where the pain is sometimes perceived as being about 15cm above where my head ends, on rare occasions the pain has occupied a point in space within a metre or so radius of me that I can move relative to, I've found headaches can have size, shape, & texture.

So my personal anecdote on pain is that once I twisted my ankle at work and had go home. When I twisted my ankle, I was in no pain at all. My ankle puffed up, and I had a nasty bruise. I carried on working for a bit but I knew I had to go home. I showed my supervisor the ankle, and he was genuinely concerned. Then my coworker came in, and she was flabbergasted over how bad it looked. That's when the pain started, and it didn't get better until I got home, and laid down. That's when I realized that every person handled pain differently, but as a social species we tend to use context clues a lot to figure out the appropriate reactions to certain events. As such, when someone says "Hey, that ankle is bad. You should go to the ER" in my mind I'm thinking "It doesn't hurt... but now I'm worried... oh and now it hurts..." I have a high pain tolerance until someone else points out that I need to be in pain.

I love the ambiguity inherent in the following statement: "Pain can sort of offer you a reward, and this would explain why people do weird stuff (....) - eat chili peppers, (....) run marathons; _they'll read '50 Shades of Grey!'_ " (My italics)... I wish I knew what this last represented; a comment on masochism? A book review? Or perhaps even the _enactment_ of masochism?!!

2 months ago I fell to the ground and stopped it with just one single arm, for one second it seemed I had plenty of time to decide how to go down... but I had one arm ocuppied with some silly cardboard, I rememer to mistakenly though not to use one of the arms... it felt so unhurried, not like movie slow time; well now hearing Lindy I see how the instincts are "given" to the concious (by the way my arm still hurts)

I concur with the point about molars being bad for pepper seeds. I think perhaps it could also have to do with the amount of scarification a pepper seed gets in different digestive systems. Perhaps some critters break it down too much.

The funny thing with empathy is, it's something you learn so you might not develop it much for things you didn't experience yourself. And you can learn to not feel empathy. (like when you live in a big city and walk by homeless people every day) Btw, Pain and pleasure are very close, it's surprisingly easy to turn pain into pleasure. (sadly not always) Pains make you feel alive and connect to your body. I once stepped on a nail, which went straight through my foot, I didn't even notice really until my feet got wet in the boots.

I remember dr mike isratel saying foam rollers are basically useless because the supposed benefit of breaking down fascia and altering tissue composition is not possible at the forces a foam roller can generate. What the foam roller does do is overload the nerves of the area into a state of desensitization, which then allows for the percieved pain of movements to go away. The effect of foam rolling doesnt last long at all because the nerves reset back to normal fairly quickly.

I think it8s worth a mention that leprosy can also cause direct damage to bones through resorption, and also deform and scar skin. This might help explain why losing extremities isn’t as much of an issue for those rare few individuals who are neurologically incapable of feeling pain from birth.

I've been to the hospital, by ambulance, for back pain. Morphine did not help. What did work was a muscle relaxant. Give that a go and see if it helps your back. It might make you sleepy, but a nap is a good thing, too, to get rid of pain. I no longer take heavy-duty anti-inflammatories for my arthritis. I just deal with the pain. If it gets really bad, extra strength acetaminophen works. Cheers from your older doppelganger; 73 in January. Jon in rural BC, Canada

I definitely have felt firsthand the oddness of the communal effect on pain tolerance in one of the most objectively measurable ways I could have ever imagined. My fight gym does timed ice baths as a mental toughness exercise. I’ve done it twice. The first time was in the dead of winter. I was surrounded by the rest of the gym who were cheering me on and talking me through it. I lasted 2.5 minutes in that ice water. The second time I did it was in the height of summer. I was alone. And try as I might, I was unable to tolerate longer than 70 seconds before I had to exit the ice water. It was shocking to me to look at the video of myself from just that prior winter and see myself sit in that ice water for over twice as long.
