PAINFUL Ear Cleaning in Mumbai (is it a SCAM?) 🇮🇳

I arrived in Mumbai not knowing what to expect. Would I find myself in a slum or a billionaire's playground? Would the people be as friendly as I had found throughout the North of India?
My immediate first impressions were positive, given the more pleasant temperature and air quality following my time in Delhi and Rajasthan. As I stepped out on the street opposite Mumbai's world famous Taj Hotel, I wanted to check out the Gateway of India given it's historical ties to my British ancestors.
As I made my way through the district of Southern Mumbai I met my first ear cleaner and decided to give it a go once I had seen some of the locals leave with their eardrums intact. Having built up the courage, the procedure didn't seem to be a scam, but the ear cleaning did prove to be painful, so I had to ask the guy to back off a couple of times so that I could take a breather.
It was quite an experience, and after a glass of fresh sugar cane juice I was back on the road. I spotted a nice Indian cricket home jersey and haggled with the street seller to negotiate the best price.
Wearing my new shirt, I headed towards Chowpatty Beach to meet more of the locals and get a better feel for what life is really like in modern Mumbai. The place was much cleaner than I expected, but as I made my way towards the sand for a kulfi ice cream at Kapoor's Punjabi Kulfi on the sand, I then saw the challenges that the city faces with water pollution from crude oil and plastic.
Nonetheless, I was encouraged to learn just how far Mumbai has come in its recent efforts to clean up, following a huge drive around the recent G20 summit. As such, I was able to see beyond this and appreciate the modernity of the city and it's friendly people to end the day on a positive.

It's not a scam but like many street services in countries with low regulations and government oversight of street performers/salesmen/servers there are some scammers poisoning the bunch. In some countries with ear cleaning culture you'll find the service is provided in barber shops after a hair cut/shave or through dedicated salons and health spas

Thanks for your insights - I’ve heard so many conflicting accounts that I really didn’t know what to believe. It seems that the people who label it a ‘scam’ are confusing a perceived lack of hygiene and/or safety, with the money charged for the process (never really in doubt) 👍

I've noticed that the footage in india, whenever it's near a road, i hear the drivers honking horns almost constantly. Why is this?

Accurate observation - it never stops, day or night, everywhere in the country. They are doing it to warn other road users of their presence, almost like 'sonar', beyond relying on sight. I guess its because there are no rules or etiquette on India's roads so everyone is constantly swerving to avoid one another. And hence, the horns!

That close-up on the ear-juice damn I live in a nearby state, been there a couple times, and always walked past these guys. And i don't think they're being hygienic enough! Understand the tourist-spirit though! Stay safe and have fun!

Yeah I'm from Mumbai that ear cleaning isn't medically recommended as far as I know. Can rupture your ear drum if they mess up from what I've heard. Man you're trying things I wouldn't dare to in my own city 🤣.

Ear cleaning is not a scam, ears have been claened this way in many countries for thousands of years, but there are some who will scam you by charging you 10x, 20x or as much as 100x more than the standard rate of 60-80 Rupees for the same procedure. I must advise that if you get your ears cleaned this way again, you must sit still and stay quiet, failure to do so could lead to injury, the ear cleaner needs his/her full concentration to carry out the delicate procedure & if you move while they are cleaning your ears the metal scrapers can damage the eardrum.

ngl when it comes to cleaning ears. dont risk it, im okey with the normal cleaning bUT ANY SUBSTANCE THEY WANT TO PUT IN UR EAR DENY IT. you never know they arent doctors could have bad side effects.

‘Struggling’ in the sense that they are desperately trying to overcharge, and not being given an easy ride?

@@InvestedAdventure no. Struggling in the fact that they’re doing this for a fraction of the amount it would cost in your country, so they can afford food to eat, yet you still want a bargain. How about give more than you take from them.
