“Joker” was a masterpiece, It was in so many ways a trip inside the mind of a mentally ill, disturbed and disabled person. The sudden changes in music alluded to how a bipolar persons mood could switch so seamlessly. The random choreography as a display of confidence or acceptance of triumph. Etc, etc. Joaquin did an excellent job. Arthur seems very innocent and naive and it’s evident just on the way he talks. It was shot BEAUTIFULLY. Every scene grabbed you and immersed you into Arthur’s Universe. The Franklin Murray shots were some of the best in recent cinema. Long Long Longggg story short. This was a GREAT movie.

Couldn’t have put it better myself lol, I was blown away by the cinematography and I really thought that the music was just an audio representation of his emotions. I’ve seen the movie 3 times and every time I’ve been fully dragged into the world and completely immersed. The subway scene gets me nervous every time and I’m blown away by the time he stands on the police car. 10/10 movie imo

“You could smell Ledger’s Joker” - this is such a good point by Lawrence. All the Jokers are usually sharply dressed and immaculate but Heath’s joker was really an accurate representation of someone with nothing to lose, and bad intentions. Smearing his face with makeup and wearing tatty clothes. You got the impression he wouldn’t even bother to bathe because all he was interested in was destruction and causing chaos.

Matt I guess it’s because we saw the human side of Phoenix’s Joker first. That he turned, and this is something we can all relate to and know people like this. Whereas with Heath we only saw him as The Joker. No backstory or anything. So he seemed like a complete mystery, and not as tangible.

Lizzie Purdy Joaquin Pheonix is a fantastic actor no doubt but that is really the film’s biggest strength. It’s a good film but not as original or ground-breaking as people say it is. It makes sense and is a believable backstory to Joker: Bad things happen to him so he does bad things as a result of it. Happens all the time with real life people. Really don’t understand the “critique of society”. Pheonix’s Joker is a champion for people who feel a lot of self-pity. Masking jealousy for others as some kind of psuedo-heroic defiance is pretty much all the film does - hence why some people go as far to call it dangerous. Overall, it’s a good film but not excellent or particularly memorable aside from Pheonix - who is as magnetic as he usually is.
@lizziepurdy6415
@lizziepurdy6415 4 жыл бұрын
TomCL 2000 I agree with a lot of your points. The film in itself is a character study, which is why the plot explores simpler concepts, as it allows a greater focus on the subtlety in Phoenix’s performance. This is a big issue for some people, but in films I really don’t mind it at all. As for the “criticism of society”, this lies in not only what it says about wealth divides and the elite, but about the normal civilian and our complacency and even responsibility in ostracising characters like Arthur Fleck. Also how societies claim to preach peace and love but are underlyingly sinister and hypocritical in how they poke fun at the ostracised. I agree with you, it’s no ground-breaking watershed movie for cinema, but in my opinion it certainly is one of the best films of the year - and despite its unoriginality in plot, it felt like a breath of fresh air after being saturated with Disney remakes and endless action sequels. Thanks for replying though :-)
@TomCL-vb6xc
@TomCL-vb6xc 4 жыл бұрын
Lizzie Purdy Again, nothing that you mentioned is very revolutionary. I definitely think the film is sound as a believable backstory to how Joker came to be, but I think it says little for how we treat people or class divides. Arthur is dealt a bad hand in life but still chooses to go down the route he chooses when there are other viable options. It is individuals that mistreat Arthur, not really society as a collective. Challenging the morals of a society isn’t a bad thing, but it is a lost cause. Everyone who watches the film would still be freaked out by people like Arthur in real life and I don’t blame them. We won’t treat anyone else with more kindness because of what happens in Joker and even if we did it wouldn’t feel honest - at best the film suggests that we treat outcasts better out of fear that they will kill us. Again, the film isn’t bad, but if you view Arthur as anything other than a villain - albeit one who was once innocent - then it justifies the claims from some that the film is potentially a glamorisation of violence.

Arguably it's similar, but also a complete opposite of a superhero film. There is no one who saves the day, no one ever helps. The 'hero' of the film is absurdist nihilism. It is what saves Arthur from killing himself. His realisation at the end is the key that unlocks his freedom. You can call it a hero's journey, but in the most negative way possible.

Rodrigo Bento I don’t think the music was bad, just that some of the songs didn’t really make me feel much. There were screnes that weren’t really necessary to me, such as him climbing into a fridge. It tries way too hard in showing how unstable he is. The film isn’t nonsensical, it just isn’t all that special. It all makes sense in how Arthur becomes the Joker but any other themes it attempts to explore are left rather unexplored. Bad things happen to him, so as a result he does bad things.

Joker symbolizes the evil lurking within everyone whether we're able to admit that to ourselves or not. Every human it capable of great evil, every human is also capable of confronting evil in order to protect what they love. That is what batman and joker symbolize, not some fantasy that teens have to burn the world down. Just because an evil character is interesting and relatable does not mean people model their lives around them. grow up

With so many adaptations of the Joker and the IT movies, and the fact that I didn't think anything could stand up to Heath Ledgers Joker, I went into watching this movie thinking "this could be bad." I came out thinking "WOW"! I've now watched it 3 times and honestly, I think it's a masterpiece. This could be a stand-alone movie about society and mental illness without the connection to the comic book character. WHAT. A. PERFORMANCE! Heath Ledgers and this Joker are just different but amazing in their own way. Best ending to a movie ever.

Joaquin Phoniex was terrific! The great thing about the Joker is he is a very malleable character - so much u can do with the Joker and it would still be accurate. I thought the writing was incredible and his performance is on the same level as Heath Ledger. Joaquin’s joker is completely alien to Heath’s but it was very unique, never seen this take on the Joker before. This is the first comic book movie I’ve seen in a very long time that I actually enjoyed. Easily a 10/10 movie! My top 3 joker’s are; Joaquin Phoniex Heath Ledger Mark Hamill I can’t rank them because they are all on the same level! They are all brilliant 👏👏

This is not a superhero movie by any means? This is a brilliant story on how Arthur fleck became the joker. Then the storyline process onto Heath ledgers darker vision of the joker and Finally ending up as Jack Nicholson’s psychotic Joker/cartoon joker.

Love the podcast and loved JOKER. When I first saw the trailer I said Joaquin has finally got his Oscar! After watching the film, I had the same belief I had after seeing Heath’s performance. Sadly I never got to congratulate Heath in person (I was lucky enough to work with him way back on a production. Such a lovely guy). Next thing to review....”Stun Gun Clit Woman.” Brilliant work boys. Love it!

Michael Moore's critique was good. He basically highlighted that the first force of violence in the film was society itself. He said it held a mirror up to the western modern world: underfunded public services, shortage, and misdirected and generalised hatefulness. I think the social commentary is profound and largely overlooked

great podcast once again geordie and laurence! good point he mentions: *SPOILER ALERT* i keep watching "Joker" over and over again, because what draws me back to it is joaquin's fantastic performance, and the cinematography, but that's really......it. I tend to self doubt a lot, so I thought it was weird that I didn't like the MOVIE as much, even though everyone else kept going and on about it. there really wasn't much of a plot per say. honestly, i think the makers of the movie ended up limiting what we could have seen of the joker, and in doing so, because of the average scriptwriting, held back joaquin from using his full capability to deliver to this role. the movie's BEGINNING was set up great, only for the rest of it to be a let down. we don't really see much of an adventure with the joker, arthur fleck here, the entire focus is on his emotions. because of that, the sudden plot twist about his mom and thomas wayne isn't really that...."twist"-y. idk

Joker is the narrator in the movie. Don't you find it scary that you're beginning to take the side of a psychopathic murderer based on the interpretation of the past that he gave you? I think this film has a lot of layers to it and if you look at it a bit more open minded you might discover themes and chilling lines of logic that you didn't realise were there.
