RC Review - Walkera Runner 250 review and adding your own radio (from Banggood.com)

In this video I review the basic model and then we install a radio receiver so we can use with an existing radio. The model I have here is the version that doesn’t come with the Devo7 radio and I had to figure out how to add and configure the receiver using a Spektrum radio but you could easily do this with any PWM receiver with radios like the Taranis too. You will need 5 channels.
The next video in the series we will add the OSD module and show how it works with common FPV systems from FatShark, Boscam and Black Pearl among others.
I would strongly recommend that you buy some spares with this model, especially a set of props.

Thank you for this video. I changed my receiver to a FRSKY D8R-II plus. I was aware of the Flip Of Death that's why I did not buy the RTF. I took it out today for its maiden flight and the Runner just dropped like a brick to the ground while moving forward about 30 feet away from me. My Taranis battery and my receiver antennas look perfect no damage. The quad is destroyed and I don't know what caused the signal loss between my TX and RX. I thought the signal loss happens to the Devo 7 and not other transmitter. Tok out the receiver and placed it into another model and didn't get a signal loss.

I've had this craft for about 1 month now. The only problem I have with it is that any small crash or hard landing the video TX decouples from the frame...which depowers the TX. A zip-tie solves the problem but I'm waiting for the next piece to fall off.

My question is will I be able to setup the GPS and use the RTH function? Assign RTH to an aux switch? Can I use OpenPilot.com for setup?

Hi Painless, thanks for the video. I was wondering if you and your wife might do something for many of us that already own this quad, and for those who may be interested in it, that might very well make our run in with this Runner less painful. What I have in mind is a video of it being flown by you, with it over some soft grass, flying it up to about 30 feet high (at a fairly fast speed), and then dropping the throttle to zero and right away reapplying throttle. What I am looking for, and what I think others would like to see, is if yours, as so many others, does what is being described as the "Flip of Death" (FOD). If it does, the Walkera Runner quad will, when you reapply throttle, start flipping and descending out-of-control, and there will be nothing you can do to stop it. You may not be following the three RCGroups threads on the Walkera Runner (the oldest of which is going on two months old), and that would explain your apparent lack of knowledge of this very important issue, and lack of instruction about it. Painless360 You might, for example, you know, be racing on this racing quad. (: That would probably require you to drop the throttle from time to time. Also, flips might involve the throttle drop.

Sounds like a little bug in the ESC/FC code. I would not recommend this model for flying like that anyway. For anyone that wants a 3d rocket ship then I'd suggest biting the bullet and building one.. Luckily I don't fly like that. Thanks again..

Painless360 Thanks, there really isn't much pre-built out there yet, and Walkera has failed me with this one (I'm pretty convinced my Runner, in its current state, is not good or safe, be it as a "rocket", a racer, or a casual quad, all of which I want in my next brushless), so I'm already doing that and I'm hopeful I won't be breaking any teeth in the process.

Hi Sir, great video, thanks for you help! I could connect the Spektrum receiver (I'm using a DX6i). Everything commands I think work fine, but I'd like to know, how to use all the features that says at manual, such as mod 1, mod 2, RTH, acro mode... etc. I connected the right gear channel, but I cannot start the camera. Maybe it's a beginner question, but how can I use all the other switch commandos from Spektrum radio? I really appreciate if you can help, thanks!

Hi, we use the defaults normally by increase the YAW rate as I like the tail to be a little more responsive. I'd use a Naze32/STMF3 flight controller for Cleanflight. Use LibrePilot on a CC3D.. Best of luck!

Frustrated with my Runner, I am aware of the Flip Of Death and I did that workaround, but twice the Runner just drops like a brick to the ground while moving forward? Last night it flew perfect but the second flight it randomly dropped while moving forward at 100ft. away. My tx. battery shows full charge and my Rx. antennas look perfect no damage. Any thoughts?

+Anthony Rossi As some point we all end up getting a 'decent' radio that supports lots of models and retire the 'RTF' radios in the collection. Personally that took me 3 models before I realised it was the only way to go.. Best of luck!

Hi Painless, What is the receiver you have added to the 250? and would it be compatible with a Taranis Plus out of the box?If not, what TX module is the correct one to pair with the RX. I have looked at the FRSky 8 channel RX's but they all seem really big.As it has to be PWM my D4R-II only has 4 channels via PWM which means I wouldnt get FMOD choices.Cheers Dean

This is a Orange 615 reciever. You need a 5 channel PWM reciever for this to work. Im using a Spektrum radio here. You can also add a Orange TX module to your Taranis too..

The cable is a simple servo cable. The other is one that had the ends split into three leads. This is a very common setup for multiwii flight controllers. If you google for multiwii cables you should find all of them. You can easily modify an existing cable by using a pin to gently lift the tabs to allow you to remove and move the individual cables. Hi again painless, I want to use to use a Flysky Mini Receiver X6B Transmitter, I don't know if that makes any sense, but I happen to have one. My question is I if I can wire it to this connector on the bottom. The X6B has some picoblade? ports, what kind of wires would you use for this job? Is it doable? By the way I bought this walkera a couple of years ago, based on your review and I've had tons of fun ever since, but now I need to learn how to fix my quads and make my own builds. I've not used one here but a quick look at at and I can see that there are ports for the individual outputs (PPM, S-Bus and PWM). I no longer have the Walkera here but I remember it used PWM by default.. We did cover how I added another receiver to the model.. That video may help. Best of luck!

Im interested in Walkera, they seem to have a lot of RTF quads and toys. The Walkera 2 Axis gimbal maybe plastic but at 120 grams its lightest by almost half of any CNC'd. Im comparing Walkera QR X350 the Cheerson CX-20 and the Quanum Nova Pro. Was hoping you had reviewed a X350. So far, for me, its 1- Nova Pro, 2- Cx-20 and bringing up the rear 3 - X350. Still shopping.

Thanks for the review which was excellent as usual. I was surprised that the Lipo was a 2200 though. I would be interested to hear how it goes with a 1300 which would be considerably lighter, although I appreciate that flight duration would be reduced. Maybe use a 2200 for FPV and a 1300 for LOS aerobatics.

Painless360 I get 8 minutes zooming about at low level and 7 if I throw in flips and rolls. I could get longer but I treat my Lipos very kindly and use telemetry to warn of low battery and speak the Lipo voltage at 30 second intervals. I have the warning voltage set to 10.4V with a 10 second repeat. and the same level set on the Naze to sound the beeper. The Lipos are Turnigy nano-techs and I use them on a slightly larger tricopter too although that is rather underpowered and could do with better motors. I prefer both with the smaller Lipos as it makes them more nimble.

I just finished the Robocat build. For the last two weeks it has been sitting. The Librepilot and Cleanflight will not connect or hook up. I get an error saying waiting for board to be hooked up, and update with plug in Update board. I have tried 2 computers-- no luck. Do you have ideas to help the problem and fly???

The Runner250 is a nice little model, I bought the FPV version while waiting for the hundred little baggies from china arrived to build my ZMR 250 ... but it has a GLARING design flaw in those solid arms: they are attached to the PDB which is just thin FR4 PCB. If the thing comes down on a corner, the arms will cause the PCB to flex and very likely snap -- unfortunately, because all of the control traces are very fine, and run along the outside of the board, they will snap too, rendering the quad useless. I've done this twice, once on the right-rear arm and once on the left rear arm, with very minor crashes (the first one was a dumb-thumb throttle cut from about 18" off of the ground, and the other was from under 3 feet. Unfortunately, because of the integrated nature of the craft, it's 40 bucks for the PDB ($30 + $10 shipping) and an hour of time to replace the board. aesthetically it's a very pretty bird, and at first glance, it looks pretty tough, but those thick arms transfer force in a very un-pretty way to the PCB :-( Mine is sitting in its box; now that my ZMR is built, I'm trying to decide if it's worth another 40 bucks to get it flying again.

It provides a nice option for pilots who are not confident builders and users of the software tools to get into smaller racing quads and FPV. I agree, the design of the arms (and the thin bottom plate) does make the expensive PCB a failure point. It would have made more sense ro make another, cheaper, easier to replace part the sacrificial piece in the arms/mounts in the event of a nasty crash. In practice I suspect that most will try and build their next quad after getting bitten by the bug flying this. With one if the £100 250 class kits from Banggood you get everything you need (apart from the radio gear) needed to build and fly. Happy flying!

The red and black wires provide the power from whatever you are plugging it into. See the videos in my 'Introduction to RC' series to find out more.

Thanks for tutorial. I setup mine as in video, but acro-mode dosnt work....auto level OK. Im using FrSky Taranis, receiver gear ch. works and "gear-cable" is ok. Channel settings in transmitter -100/100. Any idea?? Thx.

Hannu Sairanen I would connect a servo to the channel you are using for the modes and confirm that it moves when you flick the mode switch. You can also use the video where you can connect it to a PC and 'See' how the board sees the channels too..Best of luck..

I have been able to load Librepilot once-- in the beginning, The drone kept trying to drill to China off the ground. I figured that the motor order or the direction of the flight controller was wrong, After that, it has never hooked up. Gives me the error to plug in the board and manually update board with the plug in? Reloaded and reloaded, still the same, I then tried cleanflight (chosing the cc3d hex file, -- no luck. I reloaded the driver and placed it in the device manager-- It gave me a com 3 number. My naz 32 advance is coming in 10 days-- will try cleanflight once more. Do you have any more things I can try? On librepilot, when I update and erase (1st step)-- it times out and will not connect,

Painless360, can I use Futaba R6K 6 channel radio to run on this Walkera Runner 250? I noticed you mention this system runs only 5 channels, mind asking what does the AUX 1 ,2, 3 use as? I did some research on the Walkera Runner 250 Advance which has GPS function. The main board jumper connector remains the same in which requries 5 channels to get it working. But how we use a 6 channel like Futaba T6K to work with the "MIX mode" whereby it has 3 position flip switch for Manual > GPS Hold > Return To Home. Thank you.

See our other videos on this model where we connect it to a PC. The flight controller is a Multiwii and we have loads of videos on setting up that board too that may be helpful. The 'mode switch' can be set to activate up to three flight modes and you can choose them via the GUI.. Best of luck

The one we had here needed only five channels. Four for the main flight controls and one for the flight mode. Later models may be different but I've not seen them.. Best of luck!

Simply connect the wires to the right channels. Test using the GUI that the control on the radio moves the right input. Work through it methodically and you'll get there..

+michael williamson Make sure you can see the channel values moving in the monitor on the radio first. Once you've seen what channel is moving for the switch you want connect that one up to be used for the modes on the model. Best of luck.

Jon Car Yes but only the one they make as the connections are all made in the PCB itself. You could cut the wires from the camera but if you're into that then I'd buy and make a ZMR250 or QAV250..Video showing the Walkera OSD and how this works with FatShark, Boscam and Black Pearl receivers planned..Happy flying!

Darío Alomía Test your current active setup by binding the TX and RX, engage the throttle , and while throttled up cut the power for the TX and if the props continue to spin you got a potentially real bad problem. To fix this you have to engage the throttle fail-safe in the TX, I had the Devo F7 and there is an option in the TX menu to enable throttle fail-safe, I no longer have that TX, but this is what you need to do.

Those short little orange antennas laying right down on the carbon surrounded by carbon... that's not a good idea.

RCKnut Works great actually, just make sure they have enough clearance from the carbon around the antennas. Feel free to mount yours where makes sense to you.Happy flying!

Well they should work. but they would also be blocked very easily, especially if you fly away from you at high speed. Sure it might usually work, but I wouldn't trust it to work reliably. Guessing you don't get RSSI on that controller?

Not had any issues at all on any orientation or attitude. Out to edge of visible range is fine with no loss of packets reported by the Rx. The frame is open enough to orientate the antennas at 90 degrees to provide the best coverage. I use the same Rx in craft with much more carbon, also without problem. You need to be careful and test it out for each model and mounting option. I wouldn't use this on a larger model where the craft would be a lot farther out, that's what the Taranis is for ;)
