The German-French artist Hans Hartung experimented a lot in his art making process. He is associated to the tachisme art movement but abstraction lyrique, the European counterpart of the Abstract expressionist painters in the US. By doing art experiments, Hans Hartung art looks quite different, it takes some work to like it. To understand his wat of working I do my own art experiments trying to create similar artwork.

Materials
The art materials I use in the videos are not sponsored.
I prefer to work on multi-purpose paper, more info in this video: • How to choose the RIGH... In almost all my videos I use with Winsor&Newton Galeria acrylics, if not, I will say so in the video. Other materials I use are in random order: 5, 10 and 40mm brushes, palette knives, acrylics medium, Ecoline liquid watercolor, Lyra color pencils, Lyra soft pastels, oil pastels, Stabilo color pencils, paper palette pad and basic masking tape. I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.

Hi James, thanks. I switch projects sometimes if I feel like it. Hi Albert! Thank you for all these experiments. Your tests are really very successful especially those with the reeds. I had the chance to see in 2016 a big exhibition on Hartung in Aubagne because he was a legionnaire and there is the legion in Aubagne. It was fascinating but above all it showed his paintings of projections of stains and these more figurative beginnings. It is therefore very interesting that you have to demonstrate the use of various tools to make the lines.

Hi Albert.Thank you for the mention. I like the way that this video follows on quite naturally from the one you did on Richard Serra, As you painted with the water reeds, I noticed first, the lighter marks being made around the edges. These were far more interesting to me. I decided I wanted to have ago at that. Most of my prints and paintings have been quite dense. I 'm keen to have a try at a more ethereal, open style. I found a lot of inspiring, tantalising ideas in this video, thank you so much.
@ImperfectPaintings
@ImperfectPaintings 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gordon, thanks and my pleasure. You pointed me to him. Indeed it follows nicely on the Serra experiments. The spontaneity of the reed prints at the border are gorgeous. They resemble the artwork of Hartung, I'm a proud of that. And exactly this is what makes his art so interesting: use unexpected 'brushes' and your out of control, wonderful. I prepared some more experiments but ran out of time to execute and film them. But the video turned out nicely I guess. Enjoy doing your own experiments, Albert

Hi again. I started experimenting with a marker pen today. Interestingly, after about six attempts, the trial runs suddenly started to produce meaningful results. I shall be walking the fields around my area, looking for desicated plant stems, as soon as this awful, high wind and rain stops. Here I am fired up, not with making art, but experimenting and seeing what is possible. Thanks.

Those turned out great! I think of brown stains because I often stain my counter tops and desk tops with my coffee cup. Painting with plants, tree branches, pine cones, holds some attraction to me. Hans Hartung would be another artist that would be good to use for an Invitation to Paint segment. Thanks for the introduction. The artist that I discovered this week was Cecily Brown.

Thanks Albert. I shall send you some examples when I have anything of merit. As for the weather, living in the Pennine Mountain Chain, as I do, we tend to get a lot of rain and high wind. It tends to be breezy for a large part of the year, blowing in from the West. We Yorkshire hillsiders are a tough breed, we simply get on with what we have been given, in terms of cold, wet weather.

Hartung is one of my favorite artists. Thanks for this video. Albert, sir, I have a related question: When you mount your works on paper, how do you mount them to the frame? I am guessing that it is a temporary mounting, to show what the result would look like in a frame. Do you use double-sided tape, or some other method? I have created over 400 (finished, frameable) works - many on paper - and I need a way to photograph them. I have built the frame. I need to know a good way to mount (temporarily) within that frame, so as to get a good photo. Thanks in advance for your much valued help..! :-)
@ImperfectPaintings

Hi President, thanks. It use pieces of masking tape. I create double sided tape with it. I create a circle or ring by placing one end underneath the other. The glue is on the outside. Hopelessly difficult to explain in words... I can use it 3 or 4 times and take new tape. Oh and in the frame I mounted a foam board, but a more sturdy surface probably would be better, but for the moment this works. Hope this helps. Perhaps I can show it in te next video. I'll see what I can do. Albert
