I'm so pleased that this is your third video related to mark making and absract art, thank you. The first painting of yours in this video, (which you show on the wall) is wonderfull. It would sit next to any other other work of this kind, in any big gallery. I wanted it on my wall, but I would not dream of copying another's style. There is a whole world to paint!. I showed some of my calligraphic brush art, that you saw, to one of my wife's brothers. There was a pause, then he said, "What are they? Are they supposed to be something?" Then he shrugged. SIGH. Mind you, he was an inspector in the police force, what could I have expected? I'm now wondering if I can work towards automatic painting, bypassing my conscious mind, during the act of painting.
@ImperfectPaintings4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gordon, thanks. I liked the first one too. I had no plan. Just did one line and reacted on it. Not minding what it would become. It's not automatic painting but it's in that area I guess. Funny family members you have. I know the feeling. I guess it's like gardening. Some want a typical British lawn, others prefer bushes. Some put paint on a wall, others on a canvas. Will you tell me when you have success with automatic painting? Have a wonderful day, Albert

I'd never heard of dry swimming, but I think there's something to that exercise. I think it may be akin to capturing ideas in one's sketchbook as well. I do like Kline, and black and white painting, however, I'm more drawn to color personally. There's room in the arts for both. I too saw the figure in that last painting before you mentioned it. Some of these black and white painting reminds me of the work by Joji Nakamura, you can Google him. Most of his work is simple or minimal, others more playful.
@ImperfectPaintings4 жыл бұрын
Hi Culture Fan, in the Netherlands we have so much water a lot of people drowned each year. Dry swimming was a start. Later all kids got swimming lessons and now almost everybody can swim. I like color too but black & white have also an attractive side. Nakamura is interesting, thanks for mentioning him, I will look into it. Albert

I enjoy the amazing contrasts of black and white. Maybe you can talk a bit at some point about the struggle of a simple black and white painting looking too much like art that has already been done before. I guess I still kind of question or struggle with art that looks too copied from other artists and doing black and white really accentuates that kind of problem for me. How can I make it really mine and original if it already looks like someone else's? Is that a major enough question! Even asking that question makes me think I am missing something. Any painting I do, is mine and is original I guess. Loving your videos a ton!
@ImperfectPaintings4 жыл бұрын
Hi James, interesting question for the video. I guess all males and females look the same. But you marry the one. What's the difference? I guess you got to know her better, spend more time with her, saw details you preferred over others. Art that 'looks the same' like yours is probably quite different from your artwork. Especially in real life situations like a museum. Continue making yours, it will change slightly or massively and in a year look totally different because you evolve. Stil, interesting question. I'll look into it. Albert
@NancyONeill3 жыл бұрын
I'm loving watching your videos. I'd like your opinion on this. When doing these minimalistic paintings on stretched canvas, is it recommended or necessary to paint the background, even if it's just white paint or is it acceptable to leave bare canvas showing?
@ImperfectPaintings3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy, thanks. Good question. What I mostly show in my videos are ideas to get you going. So I this case minimalist black&white. I look at them as sketches. When you would do this on a canvas, even a gessoed one, I would start with a white or light layer. It maybe is hardly visible, but you would 'feel' or sense a different energy radiate from it. More layers adds a depth to it. I recommend trying it and see for yourself if this is correct. Happy painting, Albert

Hi again. I've emailed you just now. I understood that you were asking about automatic painting. What I didn't say, is that there is a direct link between the two. Automatic painting came when painters realised that the same techniques could be applied to painting. (Also to musical composition and other arts).
