Reconstruction of ancient painting techniques : paint making process from natural pigment in the studio.
Raw cinnabar ore from Spain has been crushed in a mortar, ground with water, and dried to obtain a suitable fine pigment.
This pigment is then mixed with oil and mulled on the slab.
Here you can see this oil paint making. To achieve a satisfying pigment dispersion level one must reach a good shear rate. So the paste must be worked in very thin layer and attention must be paid for your muller not to slip on the paste during the process.
The way my muller moves into the thin paint film, the sound of grinding, can tell me if I am working efficently. Above all, one must obtain a fine paste, suitable for her/his artist's painting technique.
