I loved the tip about slowly reducing the lineart opacity in steps as you add shadow and light. So it is still there to guide you until you have enough information painted in to read the forms without it. Great tutorial. Thanks!

HOLY CRAP THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH ;v; I've been trying to learn digital painting, but it's been so hard to break my workflow of nice lineart, it helps me understand the form so much better...but I think this will help me learn since I really only need to learn half of a new workflow, with rendering and such for digital painting

Thanks, these are awesome tips!! I feel like this is where I'm stuck the most. I've only ever done pencil paper all my life so coming from a black/white world feels like such a hindrance.
@CAARCRINOLAS4 жыл бұрын
I spent half my life making pencil drawings and getting really good at using pencils. But it really seems like my audience doesn't give a crap about anything black and white. Like nobody even looks at your art if it isn't in color. I guess they are but simple people...

Amazing video, great tips! One thing I do when erasing any extra effects like dodge and shadow on different layers in Sketchbook is to use select tool on the outside of the base sketch (with one layer select turned on) and select and delete every layer that has that effect. Saves so much time. Hopefully that’s a helpful tip for someone!

15:06 Instead of having to go in erasing parts of the layers when the background colors change to more darker colors you can try locking the transparency so all the changes stay within the boundary of the color dodge layer and avoid having to erase saving time.

Hey, dude! Amazing art! I'm a noob at this and, due to it's speed art, I can't realize how you blend colors. Do you use a hard edge brush for base colors and then another brush to blend them? Sorry for bothering! I like better the brush technics rather than the airbrush ones and I would like to know how to master them. Have a nice New Year!

Oh... felt great to see those great video tutorials of yours regarding sketcbook pro.., but I'm kinda sad when I noticed that a lot of those you feature doesn't or cannot be applied in mobile version. I hope you also make tutorials and demo on mobile using sketchbook pro. Still, I thank you for your videos... it inspired me to draw again. :)

So it all comes back to edges, right? I like how all comes back to the fundamentals, because that's something you can work on and is (mostly) disconnected from talent :)
@IMKatar6 жыл бұрын
That thing at 12:52, you can easily avoid it by making a layer mask. Saves a ton of time. Unless Sketchbook doesn't have that feature, in which case I wouldn't touch that software XD
@Khytlol6 жыл бұрын
Personally (Using photoshop) I trace my outline with the pen tool, fill the tracing with some grey colour and then have parent layers ontop of that fill so I don't go outside it when painting and just bringing down the sketch layer opacity to like 30% and at the end delete it
@TrentKaniuga6 жыл бұрын
That works pretty well for Photoshop. You could also use gradient maps on your gray fills and gradients to get good results faster in PS.

I just got Sketchbook when it went to free. It looks like a cleaner interface than Krita. I am honestly a complete newb with respect to digital art and am just now trying to go from pencil and paper line art to digital. This tutorial (and several of your others) will help a lot. Any tips on going from scanned copy of a pencil drawing to digital line art? Other than retracing everything?
@TrentKaniuga6 жыл бұрын
Whoa! Don't retrace it! Just set your line art layer to multiply and follow the steps in this video.
@AnthonyPotts6 жыл бұрын
Ahh, I haven't used multiply and didn't realize that was how multiply worked, even though I've heard you say it several times on other videos...NEWB! Thank you.

Trent Kaniuga I am currently more in a state where I try what SketchBook can do , but yeah I use it quite often however it is easy to mess things up with it so I need to find a balance on how much I should use it :)

Hello there! Your art and work in general is such an inspiration to me and you helped me to go further from just drawing fanarts to redesign characters, thank you for spending so much time and energy into these videos!! I also have a question ..How can an artist start to work on gaming industry? Is there anyone out there who want to hire a starter artist without much experience? In my country we don’t have gaming industries and we don’t really care about art either so I’m kinda lost.. Should I make a portfolio and send it to small gaming industries? Do you have any suggestions?

It blasts out color saturation big time. Thats why it's great for creating core shadows.

Xp-Pen makes very good cheap tablets, their quality is almost comparable to the most expensive Wacom products. Try the Deco 01-03 series, I have a 03 and it's great, I bought it to replace my old Intuos Pro and I'm really happy with it :)

trent do you use the opacity,flow configs of the bruses? or you just use the full opaque brushes?
@TrentKaniuga6 жыл бұрын
It depends on the brush. But yes, most all of them use pressure set to opacity, except for my oily brush.
@david18cruz19896 жыл бұрын
thanks for the answer trent, you're one of my favorite concept artists.mind if i make another question how much do you set the pressure sentitivity on the pen itself? i have a hard time figuring out a good setting, because i fear scratching the table or breaking the pen nib.
