Thanks for making this vid. I am fixing a poorly patched living room ceiling for a house built in 1958. All the old stuff was removed and resprayed but it was poorly done. I knocked down all the popcorn but as you know, orange peel everywhere even though I used 3 gallons of water from a sprayer to scrape off the popcorn. Hey Kirk, vic @ Under Construction out in iowa. Like your vids. We do stucco and epoxy floors,as a result I have dried epoxy rollers that I usually toss. Not any more, if I spin them while kinda wet it dries into a spiked roller,over a plastic sheet in one direction it dries semi smooth and over a slate tile it will pick up the pattern. I also use Acryll60 in my 3-1 mix for extra strength and flexibility up here in freeze thaw country,and my brown coat always has 5% of weight in glass fiber,helps in shrinkage or expansion from cracking. You da man!

@StuccoPlastering10 жыл бұрын
Afternoon MegaTregg, excellent question as there are many plasters and drywall compounds and mudds available they sometime make my head spin. The product I used for this sample and the one I would recommend to you DIY weekend warriors is Westpac's fast set. I used a 40 minute set for this as I knew I would scrape off then go in the house and use what's was left from my bucket for my project. I would recomend this same fast set drywall patching compound to you DIY folks but get the 90 minute set time, you will have more time to apply, practice and learn. Plasters such as fix all hardens in minutes, not for this purpose. I don't recommend any of the Veneer's plasters either as this is not their purpose. By the way you can purchase this material from Lowe's or Home Depot and most other big hardware stores. The dry bags weigh about 25 pounds. Lastly if you use dirty bucket's, water, tools, drill's paddles you will set the speed time much quicker. Best wishes, kirk and family

Hey Kirk Mark again. Just to set tings straight in my mind...should I hard trowel and or try a roller for orange peel texture after letting plaster set for 20 mins.-for a 45 minute mud...a half-hour or so for a 90 minute mud...or should I just be "watching paint dry" is in trial and error and noticing when the setting compound is loosing it's moisture/turning white? Peace from B-more (That's Baltimore in proper English)
@StuccoPlastering7 жыл бұрын
Good afternoon Mars, weather is the key, if you apply a 90 minute mud this will give you extra time needed as the roller has to be cleaned often or it will build up with mud, plus if it sets too fast and the roller is not wet it will simply pull the mud off. Takes a lot of practice. Live long and plaster Kirk’s how to plastering video’s
@muvs32pap7 жыл бұрын
Thx for the reply brother. I will be practicing in my basement but it is a half concrete half clay basement...don't know if you came across that on west coast...but the basement will slow drying times so I will have to improvise. I am going to practice using the roller when the plaster is cool to touch but doesn't come off on my hand like wet paint...that's the whole point right. moist enough to be malleable but not so damp/wet that the texture won't set up right. BTW the clay basements here are no longer code so I will have to rip up my kitchen/dinning room to lay concrete slab over it, we call it making a rat trap...though I don't know why:). Sometimes I almost want to go back to renting but it is what it is and I at least I will be able to say I tried!

I just matched the finish around the windows that were replaced years ago. ( On another note, I discovered red foam floats come in Smooth AND Rough. I also found a green polyurethane foam float, which gave the finish I needed. ) Now my wife wants me to color coat and put a finish over the smooth (1958) stucco. Would it work to just apply a skip trowel or dash/knock-down and then paint? I do not look forward to color coating the whole house. I assume a heavier sand would be needed to make the finish more pronounced. Thanks again!...P.S. Now that I have watched another video, I actually have a sand/trowel finish. Looks like Spanish Lace should work since I plan to paint.
@StuccoPlastering5 жыл бұрын
Good Evening Manuel, if you have a smooth finish, you can apply any finish you want over it. If you have a heavy finish, now that's much harder to skim coat. Peace, love, and happiness to all. Sharing stucco wisdom with Kirk Giordano plastering

Evening Lynn Darling, not really; you're better off with a think nap roller for painting. If you mean, can you use this to make impressions on the wall with paint, sort of, but to have depth, a coat of mud at least an eighth inch thick works better? I say give it a try as I have not tried that. Post your results here. In fact, use separate color also.😉 Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. If i fix areas with rolling mud, it will always show up as sand looking texture instead of the original paint texture look, even after two coats. Repairs rarely match for me! After fixing a spot, regular paint with thick nap works best for me.
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Morning JJC, you are not alone; this takes practice to get the mud correct. It's best to use the longest setting muds such as 90-minute mud or even an hour and a half, plus keeping the roller wet and clean helps big time. 💃🏻

Just had someone repair my concrete block wall in backyard. Unfortunately they didn't bother to match the texture of the other blocks. It was the bottom row only I wanted repaired and they did two rows instead. Now the texture difference is very noticeable and they didn't use a mortar joint tool for the joints so you can hardly see the joint. Would something like you are doing in this video work on my wall to try and match up the texture and what material would I use. I suppose going on 48 hrs after, the mortar joints cannot be adjusted? I'm going to call them about it but don't know if they will attempt to rectify the situation.

OK....the 3rd sample (the orange peel)......what size nap would you use if you wanted LESS of an orange peel texture? Trying to blend in a drywall patch where the surrounding area appears to be either heavy roller stipple (surface looks almost like an orange peel) or might even BE a lightly sprayed orange pool). Anyway, what length nap and how much do you thin out the mud? Last, I guess, is how long do you leave the mud on the wall before you hit it with the roller?
@StuccoPlastering8 жыл бұрын
Morning Twister dude, even a smooth roller say 3/8 can create an orange peal look, the rules are the heavier the nap the greater the texture, sorry, but it will take a bit of experimenting on your part as I can't see what your doing. Taping muds rolled over once or twice will adhere, however the more you go over this taping mud with the roller the mud has a tendency to come off the wall or ceiling and go back on the roller, again it takes a bit of practice. With taping mud it's not really a matter of time, but instaed what is the dryest surface the roller or the wall, the mud will stick to the dryest like a sock in a dryer. Best wishes, Kirk giordano plastering

No, you need the rubber or polyurethane templates. They need to be constantly wet each time pressed down onto the wet cement for the pattern to look okay. The bigger the pad, the more experience will be needed. The idea is to keep cleaning these templates each time you press down and then remove them or not work properly.

Howdy, that depends on what you're trying to achieve, as if you run a trowel over it, that changes the texture. 😏

Kirk!!!! can you help me with a problem I'm having? I'm texturing my walls now and I also have purchased a couple of types of rollers for testing to see what I get, but I am having a problem with cracking after it dries, I'm about an 1/8" thick also, but when I use the first roller you show in the above video, it looks just like your demonstration, and then after it dries a bit, I lay the peaks down (knockdown?) with the trowel and get a really cool effect, but then after it dries, it's cracked. Will painting hide that? or do you have any suggestions? I took a picture of it, but I can't put it with this post. thanks in advance for any advice!
@StuccoPlastering6 жыл бұрын
Howdy Tony, I would advice using 90 minutes Easy Sand or Westpac's drywall compound, this will give you enough time to finish, wet the roller often also. If your using taping mud this will crack big time as it's designed to only be applied very thin. Live long and plaster Mastering Plastering for the beginner

every time I turn around, there is yet another product and step to properly finishing a wall for painting, now I need to apply Easy Sand, I watched several videos on applying this stuff, but none of them were about texturing, do I texture with Easy Sand too? or do I apply Easy Sand and then use something ELSE to texture with and if so, what do I use, joint compound? I'm trying to finish the wall to paint it, but the work/learning phase of this job is seemingly endless and long.... any help there Kirk??? a kind thank you in advance, I really appreciate your expertise!!!
@StuccoPlastering6 жыл бұрын
Good Morning Tony, if you already have the texture you want and it's cracksed you might try some soupy mud weather or not Easy sand or wespac's to fill in the cracks, tapping mud or joint compond if applid more than an eith will crack possibly, but has no sand which may be the finish you want where the drwall componds have a fine sand so they wont shrink, but the fine sand may show. I have done seval of these finishes and they are a rel drag to get right. Live long and plaster Teaching the world to stucco, one video at a time.

Good evening Himes Dude, sorry to hear this, brother. Bone broth helps, but acid is needed in chicken bones, so add white vinegar and or apple cider vinegar, slow cook for two or three days, mix with your foods or drink it as a broth, full of rebuilding amino acids, which are the building blocks of bones and other stuff. Google Dr.Axe, bone broth, and get that shoulder fixed.😉 Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. Im sure I am sorry, but I did not understand, I say, and I repeat my question to you. I am from Iraq. Can I do this in any way?
@StuccoPlastering6 жыл бұрын
Good Morning Nadir, my apologies, yes, there are many different rollers with a lot of designs, you can use almost any plaster or even taping mud you want, and if you wish to add colors, this too you can do. The most time-consuming thing about using these rollers is if you apply any plaster you must keep the roller wet or it will smear the pattern and the mud/plaster, plus some areas may may have different settings, meaning the plaster applied may be wet or dry, if so the texture will be different. It looks easy as I'm just doing a small sample but on a wall it's quite difficult. happy holidays Live long and plaster Kirk and Jason Giordano plastering tips

Imo. Let me repeat that. Imo. I think all 3 just look to generic. Im gonna play around with some of my own generic ideas. I can be proud of generic only if i created it. The personal touch supercedes it though. Again,just my opinion. Im working on my bathroom that had wallpaper over that pretty women pattern paneling from the 90s. So lots of unsmooth flaws that i dont feel like goin thru the tedious that is making it completely flat and smooth. Eh im sure im boring. Everyone has their own home projects and with that. I wish everyone great luck and fine skills on your own jobs to do!! Cheers to the freedom to restore, renovate and remodel your very own home. 😁

Hello happy lady from Czech Republic you are wise to speak the Czech language and English. My mom spoke 4 languages but very little English. I can make a tool that will match this finish, with either a whisk broom or a regular broom, you take some vinyl tape and tape some of the ends sporadically and leave some loose and simply swipe sideways, the second picture is the same brush but now the end of a handle is also used for the horizontal deep half round extra lines. You can use a broom, or paint roller handle as long as it about a foot long to make the three line or how many you wish to put in. Also the plaster has to be applied at least 1/2 inch thick plus you would need to know how much time you have before the plaster sets before you can do your horizontal sweeps. To long on the wall it will set, to little time it will simply smear and or fall off. I would recommend a 90 minute drywall compound apply thick then do the swipe with the improvised whisk broom, it will take practice, but eventually you will get the desired finish. best wishes. ok ok thank you..I try it....but what material I use for this thick layer structure ? Silicone and decorative plaster and unfortunately too expensive ..this can be done from the gypsum-plaster ?.thank you..Vladka
@StuccoPlastering10 жыл бұрын
Hello Vladka, I would use the most readily drywall compound material available, Westpac's Fast set, you can purchase this at all the major hardware stores, especially if you can't find a stucco and plastering material yard nearby. They sell 20, 40 and 90 minute set times. Depending on how thick you wish to go try the 90 minute mud first, this mud gives you more time to practice, Try applying 1/4 inch at first as this might give the the depth you want. Lsst tip, mix the dry fast set drywall compound powder with clean water into clean buckets otherwise it set's faster than the bag says. these bags are very inexpensive too. best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano’s DIY, stucco and plastering instructional videos and forum

@@StuccoPlastering I have to agree with Robert. I have orange peel texture on my home walls. And off course, knowing what an orange peel looks like, it's a more gental raised but smooth speckles. What I'm seeing in the close up of the video looks like something very different. Sort of wavy. In fact you can buy a can of orange peel spray for touch ups (which I have) where you repair and area and it sprays the orange peel texture on and you paint it. Looks just like my original orange peel. It also has a nozzle that adjust for bigger peel or small peel. Just sayin.
