We make these videos to show those who may want to hire us that we do know what we are doing, so much so that we can be transparent in the applications via KZbin. Thus, all can depend on us for sound advice and workmanship.
We were using regular Portland stucco mixed with three times the sand per every one part of the stucco. For example, for every one hundred pounds of cement stucco, 300 pounds of sand are added to the mix.
Or, for smaller jobs, buy "Rapid Set Stucco" from Home Depot or Lowes. It comes in ten or 25-pound boxes or 90-pound bags.
It has the sand already in the box or bag. You add water and apply.
It's very user-friendly and super strong. Read the label, as you don’t want to over-mix or play too much with it when applying.

I mainly do small-medium size drywall and interior plaster repair, but recently added a little exterior stucco to the mix (a lot of overlap). Your videos have been a huge help. Terrible painters up in the Bay Area.....Sometimes I go up there to fix all the crap up there. I would never patch the way they did. I would use rapid set stucco patch $$$$$ but it does work. Then dash or use hopper with acrylic stucco to blend. booth ways work.

My 1980s California house is just studs except for the corners where there is plywood sheathing. Cheap builders built the tract

Most houses in the entire country are just studs as attaching plywood didn’t become mandatory until about 1980. I was lathing stud homes before this code became law.

@@StuccoPlastering I was stunned when I had to open up some exterior walls last year and didn't hit any sheathing under the stucco! If I ever have to do a major remodel, I'm going to add some sheathing on the interior side. Makes me worry the house will crumble in an earthquake. While the new houses being built now are now sheathed, Tyvek wrapped, stucco and some even with 2x6 inch studs!

@@ironqqq that just means your home was built prior to 1980. Most homes in the country don’t have a plywood substrate, we have videos on how to repair stud homes.

@@ironqqq different states have different rules. You may have just a stud home. Stud homes that have stucco on them usually have an extra ton that is so called wasted in the stud bays. This helps insulate the homes, thus there are some benefit’s to stud homes with stucco.

Kirk - I'm down in OC and have a 100% smooth stucco house that was done in 2007. I have a lot of small cracks and some discoloration - some due to efflorescence. Wife wants it beautified. Can you paint smooth stucco reliably? What is the best option? Also - know anyone good down here? Thanks!

So I'm a painter who sometimes do small stucco patching but recently did around some newly installed windows and door cover up also some whole walls anyway I did like a skip style texture and it came out decent but I feel if the grain of texture was a little finer it would of been a perfect match are there different size sand for stucco ? Absolutely, there is Felton and Olympia, sold at plastering yards, which is preferred for stucco and clean course washed sold at concrete yards which is very course.

Watched one of Kirk's vids on how to fix cracks. I live in Cali in a newer neighborhood and the stucco workmanship was horrible on almost every home. Before I put mine up for sale I fixed all of the cracks myself based on Kirk's vids. Not a single stucco issue on the buyers inspection report. Guy 4 houses down paid about $4k to have his fixed so he could close.

Still at it. Keep it up. With your encouragement i did two rooms in my house with cove ceilings to match the upstairs. Hot mud with sand added. I couldn't get diamond or other plaster of paris top coats so i just floated it out to match the upstairs texture. 5" or so of cove depth. Super hard and matches. Just use a template of what you have and setup a base of wood and metal mesh. THANKS for the teachings. I love stucco too. Worked that as a kids for a few summers.

What can I say. These guys are artists able to blend into the current wall textures. It is no where as easy as it seems. These guys are journeymen professionals who have nearly seen it all. Just try to match their ability to repair a whole and texture it nearly perfectly? This is years of experience knowing techniques to do the job correctly.

Kirk you have helped me through your videos on several of my projects but now I’m stuck with a situation where I need to tear down a stucco shed from pre 70s Can you tell me is this something I can just bring to the landfill ? I’m guessing not? I have thought of everything I could possibly do to save the shed but the frame is rotten the only thing that’s still good is the stucco but I’m scared to do anything from tearing down the stucco to trying to dump it I’m scared the fees and clean up fees would be insane

Maybe you guys can answer this, if I want to paint the concrete block foundation wall on the outside of my house I just use water-based primer and then paint over it? Concrete needs to breathe but with water-based primer it won't cause any water issue?

That’s a myth, concrete does not need to breathe, you can use any quality primer for masonry, then paint it. Some of the professional I know recommend Sherwin Williams as the top paint.

It there was an easy way to make something like a silicone stamp of the existing wall pattern 😮 Like stamping concrete stamp, Hmmm wouldn't that be sweet.

Morning A stamped concrete pattern are all very similar, every person who shoot or throws a dash has a different pattern. Kinda like a fingerprint. I look at a pattern and determine many things before trying to match it.😉

@@samdanico2681 We used Rapid Set Stucoo. Type in stucco mixing ratios.

Stucco instructions recommend that you not let the stucco dry out for 24 hours, either by covering it or spraying it occasionally with a mist of water. I notice you never do this or talk about it is that because you use an accelerant?

Don't use fiberglass tape on interior sheet rock either. It is garbage. Love the video.

We do indeed use the mesh tape on just the Sheetrock seams.
