He makes a cow look good! Everybody else goes for landscapes and seascapes and mountains and Chris goes and makes a cow standing in a shed look good in a painting. That's some kind of talent this man has. This animal lover appreciates what you did.

Chris, another beautiful painting. Got a real kick out of your reflection on what’s a painter supposed to look like.. “are you edgy.” When new friends come into our house for the 1st time, a bunch have looked at MY studio and then remarked to my wife, “gosh, I didn’t know you painted, these are amazing.” I’m a middle-aged, gray hair, airline pilot who likes college football, fishing and working on cars. I guess I don’t look like a painter, either. 😆 Anyway, always impressed by your work.. really incredible. Sounds like you’ve got a great approach to life. I liked your fearlessness about being able to paint anything .. I’m sure that same attitude must’ve had at least a little something to do with being a Division I walk-on at USC. Thanks for all the great videos! John, South Florida

hey coach, you said once, when painting a portrait to take a pic with your phone half way through and study the pic. i cant tell you how helpful that is. i told you once, that every self-portrait i paint comes out looking like my friends dad that i knew in high school. well i took your advice and what i've been doing is holding the portrait up to the mirror and POOF, all the distortion shows. i can actually draw something that looks like me. now i have to figure out how to paint it that way. thanks again coach. luv yah, (no homo.)

I got the rona early January, could not paint, lost the drive or whatever. Even bought the course to kickstart myself, still need to finish it. Just this week I got back in my ‘studio’ and broke out a fresh palette, painted my sisters dog which turn out nice, I was so happy i finished a painting sitting around for months. You said something that struck deep “I GET to paint”, finding joy in what ever we do is tricky when dropped kicked by an outside force. Thank you very much coach, this video was timely.

I started painting, totally by accident, at the age of 48. You are so lucky that you found painting at a young age, and that you were able to fnd a balance between your skill and your ego and were able to see it clearly when you did. Not many people get to experience that.

It’s so terrific that you ignore what others think about you painting or being an artist. That is one of the most difficult things for me to get over. Honestly...just now allowing myself to step outside my comfort zone of anonymity and even admit out loud that I do more than “dabble.”

I started your paint course and decided to paint the lemon on my own and then follow the lessons and tutorial. It was like night and day! The 2 paintings look like they were done by different people. I could always draw, but painting just seemed like Greek to me. So much fun to explore it and come out with something I could hang on the wall and be proud of. You’re a great teacher.

You covered a question I have been wanting to ask. Thank you. I have long wondered what you do with old paintings where there is a part of it that works and part does not work. You will not have that dilemma, as you are not interested in the end result and would just scrap that work and move on to another. I find I do not want to re use a painting that has failed, but a section of it worked. Perhaps I need to get over that....? Your cow was good, Interesting that in the photo, where the lower hind leg was covered, your sketch and subsequent paining fell down in basic bovine anatomy. Also the tail set was not quite correct. It is an important part of breeding cattle, so a commission work of a special beast might need to have a little more care taken to those basics. I enjoy watching you work. Even as I watch, I still can't fully appreciate how you are able to work around the canvas and have a series of small, random brushstrokes, change the appearance so dramatically. Please keep up with these videos. It seems many of us enjoy them.

I agree with what you are saying. I just started painting about 2.5 years ago. I have only been trying to learn to paint by watching all different videos and tutorials, and I do feel that is hindering me. I do better when I just forget about all the rules and methods and just paint on my own.

Love your chats. I learn so much. My collegecart experience in painting lacked any real teaching techniques. It was literally come to class 2x week, paint something, produce a certain number of paintings thru the semester, as in 2 still life, 3 landscapes, a couple of portraits, try doing 1 impasto painting, one monochrome etc, to hand in for grading. Teacher didn't teach techniques, just offered critiques of our work. I learn more now on how to do it by watching videos like yours. I get that they want you to gain experience doing, but some guidance would have been helpful. Since college I'm trying to unlearn habits formed by just doing, and trying to progress in the medium. For example, the teacher never taught us fat over lean. It was, just paint something to hand in for grading. Thanks so much

One skill which is harder to quantify is "seeing" what you are painting with an eye to distilling the essence of what you feel when you look at your subject, photo or life. You will eventually cultivate a better eye and start seeing more things you want to paint and an understanding of why.

"I wake up everyday and I can't get to my easel quick enough" 🥰 that's definitely me ever since I started painting again. Sometimes I think what the hell is wrong with me? I need to get a life 😅 even though I'm doing my final year in uni and I'm supposed to be deadly busy 😅 but I gotta tell you man! That's not something you decide and try to do. That's a part of ones being. If you love painting, the process is most peaceful time 😇 time stops when you start painting. It's not like you can become like that by somebody's advice 🤷♀️ Anyways, thanks for your great videos ❤

I was that housewife mom off work from a department store asking about a class before enrolling in sculpture. I was definitely getting the vibe “this isn’t for you” type vibe because my outfit and look. Really sad actually. Did NOT expect THAT. I did not enroll. It seemed an immature scene because of that and also it seemed like a huge problem to even find a marble stone to work on! They were like it’s an exclusive medium and only accomplished artists know where to buy and those are snatched up and it would be “impossible” for me to find anything locally and cross for shipping blah blah.....my first rock was easy to get.....15 years later everything had changed....out of reach indeed!

I will always find interesting how running after a ball and pushing people is considered not only normal, but desirable. But painting is weird and often stigmatized ( I blame movies with all those rich extravagant, crazy or poor have-nothing-but-art-in-their-lives artists they often portray)
