Put one of my painting on Facebook. All my friends liked and complimented it. Except my real friend, she's a non-practicing artist (she gave up, but it is beside the point). She wrote that the painting was too blended. That upset my friends until I answered her comment with a big fat THANK YOU! We need real critic to improve. Hers was a eye opener, and I stopped over blending my colours and OMG what a difference. Chris, every tips you so generously share with us make a huge difference in our paintings! THANK YOU!

But what makes a painting over blended? Your friend certianly has an opinion of art. But is looseness the only accepted method of painting? The face of the Mona Lisa is blended with much subtlety and if it had been painted in loose style would it still have the same impact today?. Just food for thought.
@odissey1001003 жыл бұрын
@@TruthSetsUfree100 I agree with you Ryan. These masterpieces are sublimely blended. Mine was not. It had no contrasts, dull values and no punch. It was flat. But it’s okay, it’s part of the learning to be better process. I have a preference for looseness, and modern Impressionism.

Hiii, i have some painters in my family (mom and aunt), they paint for long years but it's not their main job (actually is more a hobby), so every piece I always receive criticism, always, and I started following you recently (1 week ago) and did one painting practice and received more compliment than criticism but to be honest I like their feedback, because when you are starting maybe some people will not tell the truth but this truth is what we need in the beginning. I feel this is the same like singing: people don't want to say that it's not good but you only grow in the criticism, because people will point where to improve. I liked seeing you struggle with the face of the lady in this painting. I didn't mean that in a sadistic way, just that it shows how hard it is even for someone experienced like yourself. A lot of my own paintings I struggle with small faces so it's good to see I'm not the only one. Usually at some point when I am fairly happy with the painting, I leave it hanging on the wall. Over time I see problems that irritate me for weeks, months or even years and at some point I take it down and redo the bad bits with more experience. Or at least a fresh mindset at a time when the painting is less precious to me.

The section that starts around 8:26 goes right to my heart. I have two loves - painting and mathematics. They’re much more similar than you can imagine. In each case, you can only ever learn by doing it, over and over and over. What you say that it will be hard, you’ll be discouraged, you fail again and again is exactly what math coaches tell you. There’s also something called mindset - some people are told as children that you are either born with a talent for something or you’re not. This called fixed mindset. But brain researchers know now that that’s wrong. They know that brains have what is called a growth mindset, the belief that we can learn anything, as long as we want to do it and are willing to keep going even when we fail, to learn from failures and be happy to have seen what went wrong. So this touches both of my life loves. Thanks so much!

My aunt took a couple of painting classes at a prominent university. A prof said that her painting was so syrupy sweet and obnoxious, and that she should throw it in the trash can. He did not know that my aunt was a successful, local artist and she had sold the painting for several thousand dollars. It was a learning experience, as she expanded her work and tried different subject matters.

It’s good to hear that other people struggle with painting. I always hit a point in the painting where it’s not done and I know it, but I am so afraid I am going to mess it up it becomes a battle within myself to go on. But I’m learning to push past that because I see you just build and build on your painting and I’m learning that so much can be salvaged as you keep on going. Trying to learn to enjoy the process, but it really fluctuates, for me, between loving it and anxiety. Lol

I think the biggest lesson I've allowed myself to learn over the past 10 years of struggling and trying--to paint--is to allow myself to "practice"--see each effort as a "practice" not a masterpiece--when I told my daughter a few days ago, what painting I was working on, she asked me what I was going to do with all the ones I've done over the past few years--I said "review them to notice any progress". I'm not sure if I've made any--but I did decide not to give up--thank you for this!

Really enjoy the content of your videos! I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing "problems" in my paintings and "fixing" them during the process. I used to get discouraged and end up walking away from a painting, then someone told me it's never too late to "fix" a painting! I've even taken a finished painting off the wall and made it better, as my skill level has increased. Your videos are teaching me to "loosen up" and I find your style much more interesting. The epiphany hit me when I started looking at some master works, like Sargent, and noticed when you look very closely at his work, the brush strokes are what make it interesting. Had I been the painter, I would have tried to make it tighter.....but it's not meant to be viewed that way! My new thought process is to not be afraid to paint ugly! Thanks to your great instruction!

Looking at the painting you're doing here, I'm fascinated by all the fine detail - I simply cannot get even the thinnest of brushes to make such small marks. The paint sticks in globs to the brush. Can't thin it down because then it refuses to stick onto the surface (at least if there is already a layer there). Do make us a video on how to make really small marks. I love the idea of small paintings, but can't make them because I can't get my brushes to paint small! I have learned from experience that your advice here is sound. One cannot over-emphasize brush-mileage. Nothing teaches you more, and thus, it is worth it to develop a high tolerance for frustration, because there will be plenty.

I fix my bad paintings. If I have one that disappoints me or looks off I let it sit for a while then I critique it. I write down some things I see such as: the values are off, the perspective is wrong, shadows are not all going the right way, the highlights are in the wrong plane...and even the color is off. Then I fix it. The fact that I cant ruin it because it is already junk is freeing. Sometimes it is hard to start a new painting because that white (or toned) canvas is perfect. That old dud can get you painting purposely and you can be free to do anything you want. You always have but dont always give yourself that freedom. It is that process that gives you the experience, hones your eye and teaches you to really understand what you are trying to do.

The procession f painting is still a process of frustration mostly. Not always. I’m learning about the medium. I’m learning it’s more complicated than a lot of people think. I don’t enjoy complications but I do love a challenge so I’m four months in to painting or at least drawing every day. I have 25 paintings and really no keepers. Well one. And one charcoal. One for prosperity. My first! And it’s good! Really simple. The charcoal is pretty compelling so I framed it to get that fresh charcoal away from rubbing. I draw no erasing. I block in for painting. Do the shadows midtone and white. Then I proceed to pretty much start. Start over and hide all original effort. It’s in that stage I get lost in in color mixing. Color changing. Darkening and lightening. Blending them over that not blended strokes. I just go kinda nuts. I’m not tamed. I want to be but then again I know I’m learning making all the changes until the painting paper pad of canvas is balling up ...not holding up. Wel on 4 months is very short time so I’ll have fun days and frustrating days I did a color theory and beginning oil painting courses stuff which helped a lot.... maybe two years and 100 paintings maybe? I can do that.

Your points are good for getting better. I would add, and probably overlaps little bit of your last point, be your own judge but do it "softly". I have this habbit of putting my latest painting hanging on wall opposite side of sofa, so when im doing what ever on sofa, i can always see the painting and look for mistakes, for balance its good to look for good parts too and think why they are that way and could they be even better some how. Hi. Thanks for your videos. I find a discripancy ( apparently) in the book you introduced ( oil painting with light and shadow): in page 70 it is written '' use thick, bold , juicy strokes to fill in these simple areas''. but in page127 it is written:'' Masss in the trees ... with THIN paint...Working thinner may give you more control and room for change''. Would you please clarify how you understand this. Are these two different styles to start with painting: Should we start with thin paint or thick paint.
@paintcoach3 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the videos! When he is giving the example on page 70 he is talking about an exercise rather than a "real" painting. He is trying to get across the importance of simplifying the scene into big flat shapes and to paint them confidently with thick juicy paint for the purposes of the exercise. You want the shapes to be bold and concrete for the exercise. If you do this exercise with the correct values and colors you will be surprised at how well the scene looks even in this simple form. It will make you realize what is important in a painting which is the big shapes of value and color. In the later example on 127 he is talking about the process of a "real" painting where you build up the layers.

Harvey Pennick, the great golf coach, was very careful to only make suggestions that would make a difference. Once you know a little golf, you can look at a golfer and see what they are doing "wrong" that is not in accordance with the perfect image one might have. But what if that is not actually the thing that is holding them back? There can be at the outset things that are wrong that are obviously going to need correcting, but when you get past that stage, you can waste time on things you can't change, or are not the major areas that need a change to get you to the level you could be at. The other day I criticized Paint Coach's painting of Ryan Gosling. I said the lips were wrong. If that was true, it would still only be a fault in the likeness. A great painter could probably come up with something more painterly to point out, if he felt there was any room for improvement.

My Critique... Reference: Peaceful meditative young girl in warm sunlight. Painting: Older step-mother thinking about how to get more roughage into her diet. Its funny, but you nailed the light! I was thinking how close to all the values you came with just the first application! Good Talk!
