Paint?! Who needs it! Wrapping the AMMO Audi R8 | How to Change a Car’s Color With Digital Wraps

This weeks episode was a fun opportunity for AMMO viewers to learn more about the vehicle wrap industry. I wanted to understand all the options car owners have to customize the finish, color, and, look and feel of their car with a wrap as opposed to a (much more permanent and expensive) paint job. We see behind the scenes of how digital prints are designed and scaled to fit a car and the complexity of installing a digital-matte-print vinyl wrap that must line up and match adjacent panels. This was a fun chance for us to learn and play with new material-Oracal 3951RA-on my car and see if it was truly a game changer. I offered my friend the Audi R8 as a way to test out the material without putting it on a “customer's" car first. Hope you enjoy the process!

The wrap looks good, of course. To use your style of comparison, you had Picasso painting your portrait. I've watched Christian wrap a great many things, and what he says about stretching "along the edge" is the single most helpful thing you can learn from him. It's helped me more than I can put into words.

@@JonnyD3ath I think matte finishes are better for wraps just because the glossy finish will never look like paint,while the matte wrap can really trick you to believe it's paint. Anyhow he wont keep it any longer so let's just wait and see the next colour

Love the old colour and the new colour, both great choices as much as they are very different. New wrap is abit less subtle but I think being an R8 it pulls it off well. So much work goes into these wraps, really are a specialized job to apply one to a good standard.

A shop near me does a smaller scale printed wrap for motorcycles, I almost go it done but decided to just do a solid wrap myself. Turns out, after about a year in the sun, their wrap faded so bad it looked like it was sitting out in the sun for 20 years. Glad I didn't get that done lol.
