Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I'm a week away from my finals and I'm really scared because I feel like I haven't learned enough due to the coronavirus, but tonight I want to try to relax by doing some painting. Even though I haven't picked up a brush in ages, I'm really looking forward to getting back into it and you're videos are a gift. Thank you for the clear explanation, you're videos are really helpful and the way you touch on every single brushstroke helps me understand the importance of every movement even better! Thanks again! 😊

I've been a landscape painter for more than 40 years but recently started a portrait in memory of my mom. My main problems are facial features. I've been through art school many years ago so I took many anatomy classes. I have good knowledge of that but painting them in oil has been a challenge. I'll keep at it until I get it right. This video is very helpful. Thanks for sharing your tips and talents, Rich.

I just love your video's, I have learned so much from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I'm a fairly new oil painter just started at age 63, now 67. Thinking of joining your patreon page soon. Thanks again ps just ordered Edgar Paynes book you recommended on composition, but my true passion is portraits, and they are also my downfall LOL. takes me 50 plus hours to do one and sometimes they just miss the mark, but I haven't given up.

I laughed so hard when you said, you render the eye fully than you have to do the other one!! Omg this is me hahaha and I'm working on learning to build them both at the same time. So yesihad a huge laugh and sooo understand! The main reason I'm commenting though is to tell you your explanation of how to paint the eye, more specifically to put the socket shape in first, then to remember the sphere behind the lids. I'm not sure if I'm wording it correctly but your wording of this for teaching is excellent, I could completely visualize what you were instructing. I have heard this explained so many times and although I understood couldn't visualize it. So if you ever decide to write a book ect. This would be a good snippit of your teachings to add. Just my opinion but I always value myself when a fellow artist shares. Just wanted to say... And have a great day :)

Good point to paint both eyes at the same time, and build them up with the surrounding anatomy. Nothing worse than painting one eye perfectly, and then realising that it's a few millimetres too low down and needs taking out and doing again. (Unless you've done it digitally in photoshop or something, in which chase you can draw the lasso around it and nudge it up...)

All good, Chris. One tip I would add to this and to all subjects but especially this subject:- Observe. i.e. look at the reference or model closely and always make an effort to work studiously from that. It seems obvious but for some reason we humans tend to think we know better than what our eyes tell us.
